Just a heads up, I found these 1 pound weight bags from a company called Lineco. They have a very soft fabric cover and have a plastic inner bag (to keep the steel shot from rusting through I guess...)
They work GREAT for holding down sheeting, cap strips,etc... They're not cheap and you can probably make them if you have a sewing machine.
I'm lazy and just bought them.
This place has them and they get cheaper in qty. http://www.framedestination.com/prin...EI20000000000/
Lineco 1 Pound Weight Bag for holding down prints while matting or mounting them for picture framing. Provides pressure to hold glued items together while drying.Non-toxic steel shot weight with soft non-abrasive double layer cloth covering. The steel shot conforms to the shape of the surface. 6 inches in length, diameter 1-1/8 inches.
I love new tools.
PS; they come in 1/2 lb sizes as well, for smaller light weight models

I use zip-lock bags filled with sand.
I use zip-lock bags filled with sand.
But I like the looks of these bags too. The best bags I've found locally are two pound cloth bags of, believe it or not, rice.

Before you guys no nuts over the steel shot bags, remember that in a humid environment, steel rust. The cloth bags will make fine sifters to sprinkle the rust over your project.
If you want a good, heavy, non oxidizing weight for bags, check into Course Silicon Carbide. It is nearly as heavy as steel, but it won't rust. It is very sharp and aprasive, so the covering needs to be able to handle it. Anything below 200 grit is going penetrate any woven bag, Some of the ceramic tumbeling media is also an option. Jewelers Stainless Steel tumbling shot is another good choice, but it can get expensive and it is very course compaired to beach sand.. Plane old lead bird shot is probably your best value and it won't leave tracks on your project. If you can find it, Garnet sand would be next on my list. Actually first as there are no health issues with garnet that I know of.
There are a lot of fine grain, heave Specific gravity items you can use. Some are abrasive, some are toxic, and some spoil over time. In the end, use what you can get your hands on[8D]

What are you thinking? I'm building balsa wood model airplanes at my house. Get alot of salt spray in your den do ya?
How much weight do you need? Kit parts usually fit pretty well.
These weight bags are made/used to hold artwork, photos, or textiles. They're about an 1 1/8" in dia and 6" long, the shot is about 3/32nds in dia.
They are very soft and their size allows them to be used to hold a cap strip.
Why would you want to use a course material like Silicon Carbide on soft balsa wood? Extra Dings?
These are about $5 bucks when you buy a dozen.
I'll look into Silicon Carbide or stainless steel the next time I decide to build at the beach or out on the back of my yacht...

I have hundreds of pounds of lead shot from my shooting days. Some I leave in 25 pound bags and I have A bunch of triple thick baggies with different ammounts.
What am I thinking?? I'm thinking I need about 400 pounds of lead when sheeting A foam core wing and A couple of ounces for smaller jobs.
When we went to steel shot for duck hunting it was A learning curve, we discovered that if your shells got damp over the season you would be shooting solid slugs the next season.
That bit of wisdom means nothing, I just thought I would bring it up!!

Yes the conform very well. They will fold in half. You can also depress the center as with any "Bean Bag" and lay it on a wing rib cap strip. Same with sheeting...
Apparently Lineco also manufactures rigid weights.
That's why I posted it. For the "majority" of kit builders they will work great and last forever. I bought a dozen of them.
I've learned my lesson, If I come up with anything else that makes my life easier I'll remember to keep it to myself...

thanks for the lead on the weight bags. I had the bad experience of bringing something in to the club for Show & Tell. "Lefty", one of the old turds, sez, "What do we need that for?
I never brought anything in to them again. And that club is on its last legs now.
there will always be #$%holes who think they know better than the rest and are the ultimate expert on everything. Those are the fools I don't listen to or help.

Well, I ordered (8) of the 1-pound soft dive weights. I have some zip-lock bags with playground sand that I've used for a while (and re-bagged every time the baggie split a seam [:@] ) and they weigh just under 2 pounds each, so I figured to get the 1-pounders to let me spread it around a little more evenly on a wing or a fuse. I'll let you know when they arrive, what I think of them.

You see that is what this site is for.people helping people with new ideas. Your post on these pre-made weight bags is not a bad post in any way. It is just a lot of the times the people who post back are just trying to help others (as you have done) with a cheaper way of doing things.
Please don't take offence to others here..... keep posting your ideas.... more ideas are better than less. I have been building for many many years. I still find ideas from this site that I never would have thought of. I read the "Beginners" site all the time as well as many other forums. Just because I am a long time builder does not mean I know everything that is for sure. I have posted ideas before only to have someone come back with a different idea on how to do things.
I for one welcome your posts...... keep them coming........ you are helping people even though you may not think so.
Thanks buddy.
