Yeah. I'm wondering if it is worth building my LT-40 with a bolt down wing. Considering it is my first build (sort of), I don't know whether I should bother? If I do, I will have to investigate a bit more on how to go about it. I'm just not real keen on the look of lacky bands holding the wing on. I had no idea how or where the dowels you were talking about went? So your photo gave me a pretty good idea of how it works? The dowels pretty much lock the front of the wing into the fuselage yeah?

Nothing to it.

Got the bolt down wing set up finally done. It was pretty easy and it came out straight, unlike some of my other attempts. [:'(]
I like the amount of dihedral I ended up with. Looks cool! [8D]
Handy site for drill bits.

If I get off the internet and get back to work I can finish this plane this weekend. lol
I thinned down some filler and brushed it on to make up the imperfections and cut down on sanding time. I may be adding a few grams, but I hate sanding. And hinging.

Besides hinging the ailerons and some final sanding, I'm ready for covering. Since I'm in the mood to smell some monokote, think Ill start with the tail feathers.

Looking Good. You've got me pumped to start building my LT-40! Gotta finish my bench first though and then give the shed a good clean out! Arrrgh!

Not yet. There is a woodworking shop close by which you pay per hour to use all there equipment. They have everything. Thicknessers, planers, lathes, biscuit cutters, table saws, spray booth etc etc etc. So I thought I'd splash out and go and make a decent bench that will fit nicely into my shed but also I have put some heavy duty castors on it so I can roll it around and work outside when the weather is good. I will post a pic when I'm finished if you want. It's a pretty basic design but it will be strong and heavy. Once I've made the bench, I won't have to use the workshop so much.
Size - 1900mm L x 700mm D x 900mm H. Not sure what that is in feet and inches? I made it that size so it would fit nicely between a few things in my shed. Otherwise I would have made it a bit longer but it should fit all of the wings I am planning to build nicely!

all i can say Gary is WOW!!! it looks really good. how are you going to paint her up? like the box? i want to re-cover mine now. not too keen on the box look-alike. i'm getting ready to start the wings on the smith mini and then i have to cover that beast. probably take it all out of me, after that. i pretty much hate the covering process, but love them after it's done. the mini is going to be clear with transparent red like the box shows, but the build up is just about all sticks, so i'm hoping it looks really good.

Sounds sweet! Post up pics when you get it done, and please do a build thread!

Thanks.
I'm going with yellow and dark teal Monokote and I'm not real happy with the covering so far. Oh well, this will be my "beater" plane anyway. Besides, you can't see the imperfections a 100' away. lol

Well it looks good from here! I will be doing a build thread and will include some pics of my new bench as well. I figure I'm half a chance of getting the build done right with everyone on here to help me out.

This is a great place to pick up a few tips. Biff you must be working fast - you're always one step ahead! I am torn between covering mine to look like an old RAF trainer or maybe just a simpler two-tone white and copper scheme. Copper predominantly on the front/underside.
I heard that Ultracote/Profilm/Oracover is better than Solarfilm and lighter than Monokote... what's the general feeling on this?
I should start covering next weekend - will post more photos then.

Howdy QJ. Looking great dude. Good job. You know what would look good with the copper, is cream. I used it on my 4*40 and really liked it.

Well for this plane I went with bright and contrasting colors laid out in a way so its easy to see the planes orientation. I got the tail feathers covered and hinged and now it's on to final sanding of the fuse.

Nice Job Gary!
Make sure and keep us updated on the rest of the covering and the maiden!

Will do!
I made a drastic change in color and am almost done with the fuse. Not sure what to think about the change right now but it's growing on me.

What happened yall is that I am almost out of covering and my order for more won't get here until Thursday and this is Sunday on Labor Day weekend. I have another full day to work on her and my goal is to maiden it next weekend. I think Ill make it but I had to make some changes. I have 3 rolls of transparent yellow Monokote and just covered the fuse with it. My first thought was that the normal yellow and transparent yellow would look weird together.
I think it could work with some trim accents and I am definitely open for suggestions.
For the wing I am planning on transparent yellow and on the center part where the sheeting is, regular yellow.

May be a long shot asking and may have to learn this for myself. But I don't like the plastic spinner that I bought and was wondering if a heavier prop nut thing would be better for the OS 30? It weighs 28 grams vs. the 16 grams of the plastic spinner and the last thing I wanted to do was to add more weight to the plane. But I'm wondering if the added weight on the crank would be beneficial to this little 4 stroker?

I like that scheme! Its awsome!
First covering job? What are you using? Ultracote?
I've built so many airplanes, and still haven't got the hang of this iron on plastic film yet! I'm great with coverite fabric though!

The framing is the easy part, everything else is a PITA! [>:]
I'm to the point mounting the RX in the fuse. Everything is smooth as far as the rudder/tailwheel and elevator goes and no servo buzz. After that it's final sanding and covering of the wing. I could be finished this weekend and ready for the maiden next weekend but Ill think Ill hold off an extra week so I can double and triple check everything.
Jus sayin.

Fantastic!! I look away for 5 seconds and you have the engine, radio, and the whole thing covered! How do you do it??
You really do nice work, hopefully it flies as well as it looks. You'll be glad you went with that airplane.
I have something that looks similiar to that that I trained on for taildraggers years ago. Saito 91, hobby lobby senior telemaster. Over 300 flights, 6 years old. I built it in a week.
