jsarsonj, I have a 120 Surpass in mine, the one with the manual choke. I like it with a 16x8 MAS on it. Tried down to 15x8 and did not like it as much, but each person has their own feel and preferences. Jon

It matters what your ALT is, also what fuel you use. Different props from different manufactures can make a significant difference too. I would recommend a good 20/20 fuel for that engine and try an APC 15x8 or 17x6 for that air frame and engine.

Thanks guys. I have been using a MA 15 x 8 and cool power fuel, the plane flies good but it will barely pull out of a hover.

A 16x6 prop will give more vertical. It will however slow it down some. Look at something wood like a Xoar in the 16x6.

I'm not that worried about speed. It's a 22 year old plane. Don't want to rip it apart. I don't know if the glue gets brittle over time. trying to upload a pic of the plane

Hey everyone!

Nice thread about the Carl Goldberg Ultimate!

Where can I get one... or closest thing to a kit?

I've built about 10 of these usually using strong .60 2 strokes and all the way up to 1.2 4 strokes.

I think the heaviest one was around 8 pounds but I enjoyed them most in the 6 pound range.
I'm not a speed flyer and verticle isn't a skill maneuver worth ruining an airplane's slow flight capability!

I don't know quite how to insert images from my PC into this forum, otherwise I'd toss a few images in.

Hi guys. I just got a ultimate from one of my friends. He built the plane 22 years ago and was afraid of crashing it so it has sat in the hanger until last week. I took it up for its maiden flight and fell in love with it. now it is in my hanger and I don't want to part with it. I have a few questions about the plane. Is it an IMAA legal plane? and what prop would you guys suggest for an O.S. fs 1.20 Thanks
Great Ultimate!!!

Regarding your question about the IMAA legal criteria, here are some specs that any IMAA legal plane should meet, a lot more info is available here:

http://www.fly-imaa.org/

IMAA legal planes should be:

80" wingspan for monoplanes
60" wingspan for biplanes
140" wingspan plus fuse length for jets

or a bit smaller if they are 1/4 true scale from a real plane.

By the way, if you want to be one of our Brotherhood members let us know.

Alfred.

It is very likely to find one on Ebay.

I was just at my local hobby shop and they have one ultimate on the shelf. It might be an ARF.

Fiberglass Specialties makes 3 different cowls for the Goldberg Ultimate. Does anyone know which one would be best for a DLE 20 and Pitts muffler? They did not have a suggestion as no one there had built that combination

The biggest one they have got! You will most likely have to fit it inverted so the one with the most cowl area below the prop hole to cover as much of the cylinder head as possible, I would imagine they will be all as equally wide. So in saying that the first one you have pictured is prob the worst going by the pictures.

Here is a picture of my skybolt with a rcg 20 beam mount (almost identical sizes as dle 20) and the standard cowl, it was a squeeze and I had to remove alot of cowl, I thought about a pitts but even then I think I would have had to cut around the exhaust a little.

I have a ultimate kit and will be powering it also with a 20 size petrol, I will offer it up against the rcg 20 and post if the ultimate cowl is bigger or smaller.

Bigger pictures can be found in the second last page of the skybolt kit forum.

Dont let the first two pictures fool you into thinking the skybolt cowl is alot smaller, in the last picture you can see the skybolt cowl fits inside the ultimate cowl by a couple of millimetres and this is where it counts as this will be where the engine will be, they are quite similar in shape and size where it counts.

Going by this, cowl two in your pictures would cover more cylinder head and the last picture would cover the most plus may just let you sqeeze in the smaller dle 20 exhaust compaired to my chunky rcg muffler.

I think I have the first one you pictured so the dle fit would be very similar to what my skybolt with the rcg looks like, again with slightly less exhaust cut out required..

I ordered the Cowl from fiberglass specialties as well as the wheel pants....  I opted for styly B and it's perfect!  Style C is just akward looking and style A (like the original) needs a lot more cutting...

Whatever one you choose, it will have to be cut for the head and plug cap/wire. IMHO, go with the first one 72, the original. It will not look bad at all! I get alot of compliments on my DLE 20 powered Ulti. I wish I had the pitts.

Hi,

I am unsure if I have posted these before, but cant find them. Sorry if I have...

This is my Ultimate built from scratch on borrowed kit plans and quite modified (a lot of lightening, strengtening, shortened nose to balance a OS 160 Twin). Great flyer.

That is a real nice looking plane!!! I'd really like to buy those plans you built from, but I see they're borrowed. Anyone know of a source for plans for this beauty?

And Aerobatic_Tom, please feel free to post more pictures and perhaps a few hints on you're modifications
