Thanks for the votes of confidence, I shouldn't be nervous but I always am a little knowing what's at stake! Today's painting turned out well... Here are some photos of the processstarting out with me! If I could give anyone someuseful tips on getting good results it would have to be this: 1. Make sure you are prepared, have everything you need at the ready. Expect the unexpected like having a trim iron on hand to secure any tapes thatneed securing, etc. 2. Think about how you are going to spray the smaller pieces. Have some type of fixture that will hold them in a position that will allow you to paint themwithout getting blown off the paint table... 3. Never compromise your safety, always wear appropriate protection.</p> |

I have to believe it is no small task getting the wheel/pants assemblies togetther, I think I would have done the same just to avoid any damage to the paint on re-assembly.....lots easier to tape up the wheels.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks all. Gary I had to test the spray pattern on something! As far as why I left the wheels on, Dave is right on the money. Way too many parts and they fit very tight, didn't want to chance damage on reassembly so I thought it was easier to tape instead.
I will let it dry for another day then I will start to lay out the scallops on the wing's leading edge! I have to work late tonight so I won't be able to do anything on Private Ryan tonight. |

After a longday at work yesterday I really felt like taking the night off but I didn't... Lots of work yet to complete.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...unge_smile.gif
I decided to start the tedious process of laying out the scallops on the wing's leading top edge. InitiallyI was going to cut out a template and trace the pattern onto the wing but I quickly found out that the scale spacing of the ribs prevented me from doing it that way. It was close but I did have to make some subtle changes that the eye can't detect. So here is how I did it. I placed some blue painters tape down the length of the wing representing the tips of the scallops while a second length of tape represented the base of the scallops. Useing 1/8" 3M vinyl tape I freehanded the curve inbetween each tip of scallop. Sounds difficult, but it really wasn't that bad. The radius' was gentle enough that the tape didn't distort... I mounted the wing to make sure that the scallops on the right side of the wing were the same as the left side, they were. I couldn't resist the temptation just to step back and take a moment to admire the lines of "Private Ryan". Oh, and I almost forgot to mention my companion (Nina). I'm watching my moms dog while she is on vacation. She is proving to be a gentle and enjoyable companion! |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
That's going to look great when the white gets sprayed.
Masking the scallops on the wings was a chore I didn't quite enjoy but it worked out fine. Later!! Anthony |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks Anthony. It took me three hours just to get the top wing layed out. Tomorrow I'll do the bottom...glad I don't have two wings to do like you do!

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Well I think I will be ready 1st just not sure if I will "Man Up" 1st;)

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Vincent, I was going to ask, did you find documentation or information on where/how to place rivets on the ryan or just estimate locations/use? I was just wondering if there were some good photos that helped along the way with rivet positioning.
Thanks, Dave |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks Cliff and Robert. Cliff was that a real storyor a joke...funny either way http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ey/msn/lol.gif.
Here's the advantage peoplehave when theybuy ARF's, they don't havethe emotinal attatchment to their model thatbuilders have, therfore they can fly them with much lessfear of crashing! My next build will not be as detailed, I need a good old everyday flyer. I knew a guy a while back who built himself an awesome vintage Chevelle that was set up for the quarter mile track...money wasn't a problem for him. He wanted a fast winning car that he could take on the racing circuit. After he built it he couldn't win a race if his life depended on it. He finally came to realize that he had to hire a professional driver that could take the car to its red-line limit each time without the emotinal attatchment of causing any damage. He never lost a race after that... |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
+1 Vinnie, but the issue I have is, there are no kits of the type of planes I like to fly.
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Dave, I poured over as many photos that I could find on N17368 and was able toreplicate were possible rivet locations as well as the number of them... Is it accurate , I would have to say probably not in all areas, some areas yes. That's why documentation beforehand is so important to a scale model builder. All in all the illusion ofthis replicated scale model is there, my next attempt at scale will start with a much better photo documentation portfolio.
As an example I believe you can see some copied photos of different shots of N17368 while I was laying out the scallops. The correct number ofscallops as well as the size has been replicated. I did this with the rivets as well, sometimes my build table had dozens of photos that I could reference. This is a problem Gary, I suppose if you found plans of a model though more difficult scratch building would be an option. That was something that always bothered me when I bought an ARF, the lack of plans with it. Plans should be included with the plane or at least the option to buy. They have to exist, someone is building these planes! (of course they would probably be in Chinese) |
