Idon't know if it was a joke or not it came from my brother inlaw a fellow flyer. But I have a friend who is a retired airline pilot and some of the stories he tells makes me believe it sure could be true. He once radioed in to the tower that he was a 727 coming in on 3 engines, because he knew the controller was a women and she responded asking if he wanted to declare an emergency, before she caught on.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ey/msn/lol.gif

I promised Mike (Out2pasture), that I would document how I masked the wing so here it is Mike, just for you...

I spent another four hours taping and masking this evening. The top and bottom of the wing scallops are now complete.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...unge_smile.gif The only thing that I have to cover with newspaper is the trailing edge side of the wing. That shouldn't take me long to do... So to this point I have a total of seven hours just in getting the wing ready for its scallops! All of the edges have been double taped to make sure there are no leaks for overspray to penetrate. It's amazing how the overspray will find the smallest chink in your armour and you won't know it untill it's too late! Will probably get the scallops painted this Sat.

Thanks for the info Vincent. While I am nowhere near your level of scale detail (a sport-modeler for 15 years), I think the RYAN (which I just sent a check off for) will be my first real scale attempt after watching this thread.......thanks to you (Yes, I am inspired). I doubt I will reach this level of quality, but it will be fun trying a achieve it. I can't thank you enough for sharing your build, I have learned a lot, and plan on utilizing all of this info on my build. Great stuff! Can't wait to see the next project you allow us to witness.....

Dave

Thanks Dave. Let me know if I can help. The Ryan lends itself well for ultra scale detailing if you want to....Just pick the Ryan you want to model and have at it....

Man that wing look's huge. And what is that? a wooden bridge on top of the air duct.

BTW.......when you do finally muster the nuggets to get that piece of art in the air, please let us know how the DL20 performs, I would like to use that engine in mine as well. I have one that I plan on putting in a Super Skybolt kit, but I would really like to know if it is a good match. My guess is yes (since it called for a .60 glow......LOL).

Thanks,

Dave

You will not be disapointed Dave. My 80"ws ryan has one and it will pull loops from level all day long and climb until you almost can't see it. Ijust bought my 4 th one now for my 60 size P-47, also have one in my 60 size p-40 (rocket ship) and also in my1/5PT-17 biplane with smokehttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gifThe xoar 17-6 prop seems to provide the best performance, but I want to try a 3 blade on the P-40. ya know vince I'm starting to understand why our wives think were just a little crazy to put all this work into something that may have a very short life span, but hey it sure is fun getting therehttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...spinnyeyes.gif

Hi Vincent,

I am watching. So thank you so much for taking these pictures and explaining your process. I’ve read several detailed threads where the builder meticulously documents every step up to and including covering and then the next photo is the fully painted and completed airframe. Aside from wheels, the canopy, propeller, and maybe bits the engine, Paint is the ONLY part of the model we see and I’d like to get better at it. (God knows I’ve given up on the new Monokote!)

Here is my Sig Kougar. It was my first attempt at spraying. I’ve learned quite a bit of what not to use for tape! I had a lot of bleed through. I’ve tried the 3M Blue painters paint, electrical tape (bad idea), light tack shelf covering, and liquid mask on the canopy (that worked!). The electrical tape left black sticky gum where I used it. The shelf covering did too. I used the Nelson water based paints. I didn’t like them. They had to be thinned till I was spraying water, took too many coats to cover, and pulled up easily. I’ll use Sig Dope on my Seniorita.

The 3M striping tape came in from Amazon today! I think they will work out much better than what I have been using. Also today I stopped by a hobby shop in San Jose. They had tiny rolls of Tamiya masking tape for almost the same price of the 3M tapes.

So… Use blue tape lines to aid in layout… Use the 3M tape to define the lines… Back fill using more blue tape… Double tape the edge with 3M tape again… Then Newspaper with blue tape. Got it.

I do have some questions if you don’t mind my asking.
Will you lightly spray with more red or clear to seal the tape edge or just spray the next color? I’m guessing that is not necessary in this case but a lot of people seem to do it. I think it’s based on not using the right tape.
How long after spraying before the tape is removed? Just after the paint flashes?
Will you wet sand the paint edge?
I don’t think you are spraying a clear coat. But if you did, is there any preparation needed? (wet sanding?)

I won’t ask about painting over decals. [8D]

Thanks,
Mike

You've got keen eyes there Robert! That is a little wooden bridge that my little girl made for a project in science class. They had to choose a type of bridge, identify its construction typeandbuild itfrom toothpicks, then they had a contest to see which bridge carried the most weight. I like to keep little reminders of her in my workshop, when I get frustrated I often glance at these gifts and it puts a smile on my face...http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ular_smile.gif(I look at them a lot!)

Mike, the white scallops with be sprayed right over the top of the exsisting red paint without any sealing of the tapes edge. After applying the vinyl tape make sure to apply pressure to the edge of the tape that will be the barrier against the paint, this will help seal and prevent any bleeding under the tape. My experience with the 3M vinyl tape has always been good with little to no bleed through. In the event that I do get some beeding under the tape it would not concern me much as I will be applying a 1/16" black pinstrip tape to give contrast between the white and red.

I may scuff the red lightly with some 600 grit paper to get a better mechanical bond between the colors. I will not be applying any clear coat over the top as I am happy with the finish that I got as well as the gloss. If you were to apply clear coat over your paint sanding with 600 or highergrit sandpaper would be advisable. Don't be concerened with the light scratch marks that you will be putting into your finish asthe clearcoat will make them all disappear! Anthony (Waconut) did a nice job on his current thread describing the process he went through to clearcoat his plane. Heeven applied the decals and pinstriping before spraying the clearcoat.

As far as when to pull the tape off is a very good question. Pull it off too soon and you will most likely end up with a hugh mess, and pull it off too late and the edge will not likely to be clean with some paint tearing in spots that you may not want too. This epoxy paint as I have stated before goes through stages as it cures, it sort of gets stringy like melted cheese on a hot pizza. I wait until it just gets past that plastic stage and then it comes off clean. The time is dependent on the temp of the room but if I were to guess it's somewhere in the 20-30 minute range. Hope this helps Mike and remember to keep your tapes edge clean by not laying your roll on a dirty table where it will pick-up crapola... BTW, very nice job on your Kougar, keep it up!

I forgot to mention, that this morning I loaded the wing in the back of my pick-up. May get it sprayed after work today! Bad news is that I forgot to bring my camera...http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../omg_smile.gif

May sound like a stupid question, how do you get the pic from the phone onto the computer?Older style flip phone, not a smart phone...

raptureboy 04-18-2013 07:29 AM

RE: Sig Ryan STA

You would need to have a sim card in the phone that can be removed and then put in a card reader or email the pics to yourself then save them and then attach them. Or, call the wife and beg her to bring you the camera http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../cry_smile.gif I have lots of those kid memories around the shop too, my daughter once came down and wrote on the paper covering my work bench " I love my daddy" with a heart drawn on it. Icut itoutand pinned it on mybullentin board. She's 26 now, that time goes way too fast.

RE: Sig Ryan STA

You can also send the pic to your email via text. On my smart phone the text is the simplest way to send a pic to someone.

RE: Sig Ryan STA

Mike, if I can jump in here..............

I've used Klasskote also and as far as pulling the masking goes, let it set up. I live in Florida so the temps are accomodating for painting. As Vincent says, too soon and you'll wind up with strings of paint pulling from the project. I usually leave it overnight and the next day allows for a clean break between the masking and paint. I have never had bleed-through with the 3M product nor have I had lift-off. In my case I don't sand the base color coat in preparation for an adjacent color change. Klasskote will adhere chemicaly for up to 48 hours before they recommend scuffing to obtain a mechanical bond. As a matter of fact, I've waited as long as five days to apply another color and had no problems with adhesion. Of course, as previously mentioned, you should burnish the tape after application and remember not to stretch it when applying.

Another good thing about using Klasskote down here is that humidity has no effect on it upon application. I attribute that to the long cure time which allows the humidity release (my opinion). I used to paint cars as a hobby and using lacquer was a hit-and-miss operation. If the humidity was up, I added retarder to allow the paint to release the moisture before drying thereby defeating the cloudiness that comes with humid conditions.

By the way, if you encounter a paint buildup that occurs next to the mask because you weren't prudent when applying paint, you can wait a couple of days for a complete cure and you can remove the edge by scraping you fingernail along the length of the line and it will flake off. But, make sure you have allowed it to fully cure. Don't get hasty.

One more thing if using Klasskote. We never get the right amount mixed for the task at hand. Usually we mix too much. You can save the leftover catalyzed paint in a sealed jar and place it in the freezer next to you favorite rib-eye and it will last a few weeks in case you need to touch up or paint some small parts. Just add some reducer to it before spraying.

Bob

Hey VJ,

Have you looked in the RCU Photo Gallery lately? It looks like somebody else has your taste in Ryan color schemes..........................:D Can't wait to see yours finished.

Anthony, your post still has me laughing so hard I have tears rolling down my face....................LOL ! !

Take care,

Good to know. Thanks for the info. I have one on the shelf, but haven't seen on in action. I am sure there are a couple at our field, but I didn't fly last year after a motorcycle/deer accident left me a bit out of sorts. Anyway, should be a great match with my Super Skybolt, and I will have to pick up another for the ryan kit that's in the mail!

Here's what last nights work looks like. Using the 3M vinyl tape gives you nice crisp lines, these however will get covered over with 1/16"black pinstripe tape...
