Neddy, a 10 oz. tank will be plenty and won't take-up too much room.

I wish someone would make a fuel bladder for RC, then it could occupy the space available.  These fuel tanks can be a problem in scale aircraft.  If it wouldn/t be so heavy I would make a wing tank to sit above the pilot.

In full size, bladders can be a royal pain - especially when it comes to required servicing. You'd find the same thing here if you burried one in your wing. Besides, a J-3 uses a tank under the top of the nose behind the instrument panel. A PA-18 uses wing tanks but they are not bladders.

As far as compact tanks go, you may want to check out Hobby Lobby. They may still handle the Graupner large size short tanks designd for spots like yours. I've used them successfullly for years in just such applications. They can be the perfect solution for this.

I've gotten a little more work done on the fuse over the past few days. Mostly little stuff but stuff that has to get done. I finished up the stringers on the rear fuse and sanded the tapers into them. I added small triangle gussets to the top side stringers, I think it will add alot of strength for only a few grams of weight. I boxed in the front window support with 1/16" balsa and I pinned the firewall and landing gear blocks. About all I have left to do with the fuse is to add some triangle stock behind the firewall and install the floors and hood over the nosepiece. I really need to think out my equipment for that area before I box it in. I'd like to put the choke on a servo if possible. With the DLE30 the throttle, choke, and fuel input are all in the same small area on the left side of the engine.

Neddy, looking great on the build, sorry I got busy on Saturday to get the pictures up. Here is what I did with the throttle, a simple, flex cable to the carb from a throttle servo mount I made in the cabin. As for the choke, I have a manual push pull inside the cockpit. My hand fits inside the right window to push or pull the choke.You could also run it out through the cowel.I also made a bracket in the center of the fuse to hold a tach hooked to the engine. When standing above the plane running the motor I always have a rpm reading through the top window. The one picture you can see a simple hole to adjust high and low needles.

Continuing the build. Nothing fancy to report today. I've started on the tail feathers. I got the fin and rudder bones put together tonight. I do have to say I have a new favorite tool. The miter sander makes quick work of building with sticks while getting great accuracy for a good tight joint.

I got the tail feathers all finished up today; all assembled, hinged, and then edges sanded round. It was my first time using Robart hinges and I must say that even using their jig it was still a PITA. I had nicely aligned marks on both surfaces to be hinged and I thought I got things lined up in the jig but somehow the drill wandered and the holes ended up being misaligned on a couple of the hinges. I had to fill them with 3/16" dowel and start over. The right elevator and rudder turned out fine. The left elevator moves fine but not quite a freely as the right. I'm going to need some more tips/practice before I hinge the ailerons.

On to the wings, I hope to get first one started this weekend.

Neddy, you won't be able to use the Robart jig when you do your ailerons, you will have to make your own jig, It's not that bad, but practice on some scraps first. You may want to also put in some hard points in your rudder and elevators while you can. I even put them where the tail brace wires are located. This will prevent the balsa from crushing... BTW looks good!

Here are the hinge guides I made to hinge the ailerons on my Cub.

They clamp onto the wing after you line them up with the mark for the hole.

I'm planning on putting in hard points but I'm going to wait until I mock everything up with the servos and pushrods to make sure I get the best placement I can. Overall, I'm really enjoying this build.

Hey guys,
At one time, hidden deep within the posts of this thread, I think there was something about Robart gear and the O-rings for the suspension.  I had my wife pick up some shock cord from REI today so I could replace the O-rings with something a little more scale.  Unfortunately she didn't read the entire text I sent her and only got one size, the 1/4" diameter... which is the size that too big.  It'll probably work fine but...  I wanted 1/8"  and 1/4", 5' of each, at 25 cents per foot I think it's rather reasonable!  I haven't tried it out yet but hey, the plane still aint covered yet.

Another thing I noticed when checking the fit, the Robart gear has the bungee "hooks" (for lack of a better word) welded in line with eachother instead of 90 degrees off.  I had pictured this wrapping just like the real thing.  I suppose it's that way for the O-rings, which I really do not like.

Has anyone else had experience with this?  Just curious.

I never had an issue with the O-rings. I would replace them each season. I also had a set of bungee covers over them which I ordred from Cubman. If I remember right the O-rings are #614 which is a common stock size you should be able to find.

Well, I was looking for something to replace the O-rings on my Sopwith Camal as well.  They are very hard to get on and they only seem to last for one days flying.  So I thought, why not do the same for the Cub as well, plus If I don't get the covers right away it'll give it a bit more scale look.  Eh, it's all for fun anyway!

Not much progress in the last week or so. I've been busy for the past couple weeks and was out of town for several days. I've started the wing root ribs and will hopefully get the wings themselves started this week. I'll be building my wings the same way SunDevilPilot built his on his build thread. The thing I have to decide is how I'm going to build the center wing section that is now integrated into the fuse with the mod I did. The stock center section has the window on top of the wing that is framed with wing ribs so the window is very deep. In order to be able to reach in the fuse to install the wing mounting bolts I think I'm going to have to build the center section framing for the top of the wing with sticks and sheet it.

I haven't decided to how to fasten the wings yet.  I am thinking of one 1/4 x 20 bolt holding each wing.  I have a carbon fiber wing tube an 1/4 inch anti rotation pin and sub D connectors for the aileron servos.  I am thinking of going in thru the doors to tighten the bolts, but a door in the center section might work.

Work will slow down next week as I have to demo 1000 sq ft of floor and lay down new.  Not looking forward to that.  Guess this cub won't fly until spring.

i too replaced my o-rings with some from a local automotive shop, got a couple sets. don't know if that 'shock-cord' will be strong enough or not?? i used covers so you don't even see them anyway. stretchy snowmobile seat cover material i had left over:) works great.
