how to construct removable nose cone on Tornado for transport ?
(this was just purchased , so new plane to me , but well used plane to be used for more training)
ok, got the nose off at the first bulkhead on the Modellbau Tornado , see pics .
Question is , what is quick easy way to reattach with latch.
I would tend to go overboard with lots of framing and glue , too heavy and just too much. And not easy to remove for transport.
I can see from previous damage on nose, that when nose gear fails, this will be the first point of impact , so I am wondering if a “breakaway†attachment is better than a super ridged attachment ?
so anyone seen any slick attachments ?
woops no pics yet ... would not load .... will try again later...
thanks, Joe

rare earth magnets will work if the nose has a lip to slide over for alignment.

thats an idea ...
typically what kind of retail store carry "rare earth magnets" ?
thanks

i bought a couple hundred of various size/thickness off eBay for a few bucks, they come in handy for lots of things in the hobby from gluing canopies in to holding hatch covers.

I would be Leary of holding the nose on with magnets.
I would be Leary of holding the nose on with magnets.
Why? all in flight force is shoving the nose even harder on, about the only time it can pop off is a very rough landing and even then it's not likely, you're not supporting a battery tray or anything, just the light weight fiberglass.

Will magnets be ok for this application, possibly, if implemented correctly.
Better safe than sorry.

just my opinion, but if you pull hard enough elevator to dislodge the nose cone the fact that it fell off is going to be the least of your worries, don't over think it, it's a very small mass, and it's not put under any significiant stress during flight, even for you ham fisted bank and yank fliers

How long will the fuse be with the nose removed and without the booms?
How long will the fuse be with the nose removed and without the booms?
Hi,
measuring from the front bulkhead (very front now ) to the rear of turbine ~42" ,
note: the wing tips extend another ~3" if measure everything squared up ... so ~45" if you like had to put it in box ..
the nose cone i cut off is almost 11"
thanks, Joe

would likely be putting on takeing off the cone every time you went to the fielduse blind nuts on the inside of the blocks for the screws to go into this method
is used for cowl mounting on many models. Also something else you could try but it would be more of a hassel and that is get a dowl about 10" long and screw
it to a base plate use screws to attach the assy to the bulkhead and then drill a hole in the tip of the nose cone and use a screw through the cone into the dowl.
One reason I have not got a tornado is its to hard to break down for transport however your removal nose cone idea seems like a good one and something to
think about.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking if it was me I would glue some wood blocks to the now exposed bulkhead and use screws to attach the nose cone, Since you

Hey Ira, thanks for construction tips... i did glue some blocks/guides on bulkhead , just looking at next step get some hardware for final attachment ...
i had also decided against the Tornado because of cumbersome take down for travel, but this used one came up locally ,,, so i now have Tornado ...
as it turns out .... by making removable nose and taking off booms only ,,, i will leave the wings attached ...
so this will work out pretty easy for transport. i had a 48" wide opening to work with in my SUV ....
good luck ...
thanks, Joe

I made the nose removable after a nose gear failure! [&o]
I used it for mounting the turbine battery, it worked well on mine to get the c of g right.
It's attached via a screw thread right at the nose tip!
I'm not sure that this will work for you, but if you like I can upload some pics to show how it was done.
John.

No problem, I will dig it out and take some shots of the conversion.
You know this is a great plane! It looks the part, and is a good all rounder.
Boomer's are very good, but I like jet to look as though it's doing over 200 mph when it's sitting on the groud!
It's worth the extra time to put it together at the field!

Here we go!
You can see that the lip is made up from 1/64 Plywood sections layered up (over lapping), bonded with C1 Cyno! The centre section is actually soft Balsa laminated with 1/64 ply (light and very strong)! The brass insert I turned up myself, the thread size is M3. To get the threaded tip in the right place, I drilled the hole in the nose cone first! Holding the nose in place by hand, I used a scribing block pointing to the centre of the hole. Without moving anything else, I removed the nose and placed the centre section in position and tack glued it in, then checked for alignment! When happy, it was glued into place with balsa reinforcement!
All you need to finish then is a 4 inch brush and a pot of black paint! (only joking).
Regards
John
