I am looking very hard at the Lanier 87" as a cheaper throw around plane.
Right now, I favor the Edge over the Yak just because it it looks like it comes in about 1/2 - 3/4 pounds less with the same wing area. Also, I think the Edge may be slightly more stable at lower speed at a heavier wing loading.
It will most likely be powered with a 60 to 80cc single cylinder and cheaper digital 56X5MG servos that I have on hand.
Anyone have any input that would confirm or deny my leaning toward the Lanier 87" Edge over the Lanier 87" Yak?
Thanks and Happy holidays all.

Straight builds... the Edge does come in lighter based on reports.
As you know from the Yak thread... there's a lot that can be done to lighten the Yak... a decent amount without CF...
I don't think you'd be disappointed with either based on your goal... but the Edge would seemingly give you a lighter wingloading. I haven't flown or seen flown the Lanier Edge (my buddy in Ohio has one but I never got to the field with him)... but he seemed to like it O.K.
I know that's not much help... [sm=72_72.gif]

Add to that a BCMA62 for $440.00 to your door.
Built right the Edge it should come in close to 18 pounds. At lower elevations this might work OK providing you are not expecting a rocket out of hover and the muffler on the BCMA is free flowing.[&:]
I know the controversy around the mod ZEN62 and the other 50cc's---still a bit confused over the entire Truth on power. From what I can tell a good running mod Zen 62 with free flowing muffler does pull a little better than the smaller 50cc.
And for $850 plus a bit more for a hardware upgrade...and radio equipment looks like a lot of bang for the buck...very temping..[&:]
Please no "You get what you pay for" posts. It is true in a lot of cases, but not all. If you do have something to add please do, as we all have something to learn and something to teach.

A zen62 pulls OK with a 24x8 or 22x10. I am currently making an electronic ignition for mine. Will drop a few oz, but I can drop the spring starter and hand start. Plus - I am hoping to get a smother idle. Zenoah shakes pretty hard at idle compared to other engines with a variable timing. Flies pretty good with the weight though. In a redo - I would go with a larger displ. engine at the same weight as G62. I think that spinning the 24x8 or 24x10 a bit harder would make it a rocket. FYI: I have the 300 Extra 87" - nearly identical to 540 Edge. Weight 18.25 lbs stock with wheel pants and true turn spinner. Also - with heavier engine like G62- you can avoid nose ballast or rudder/elevator pull/pull mods. Mine required no ballast and hit the CG just be moving battery around. (No jokes about G62 BEING a ballast
)
Only real advice - I moved up from a Goldberg 330 Extra .46 profile plane. Be aware that the larger plane is moving fast than it looks. Hard landings can damage landing gear much easier. My profile could tolerate just about any landing (including inverted !).

Well I would lean towards the Edge myself... my buddy has the Yak with a bunch of the lightening mods including holes drilled in the rudder etc. and it's still pretty heavy. The big thick wing with the huge opening in the cowl doesnt help much either
Needless to say with a Brison 3.2 it's a dog. His WH Edge weighed almost the same and just flew better and had more power out of a hover.
just my 2 cents

Both are made with outstanding quality, especially the covering. I would dare say their covering quality rivals much more expensive kits from the like of BME or EF.
The hardware is another story. You could build and fly with it, I would replace as much of it as possible.
You are correct that the Edge comes a bit lighter than the Yak. There is a very good thread from Bonedoc on the Edge that covers all there is to know.
I would also consider the Lanier Extra 330 in this bunch. It's a question of taste, but it looks good and flies very well.
Main mods would be in reducing the number of servos in the wing to two, installing pull/pull on rudder and switching all horns to sturdier bolts.
It's true that these can use a larger engine, especially the Yak, but I have flown my Extra on a DA-50 and it's quite unlimited. flies out from hover with no problem. Weight is 17.5 lbs.

My Uncle was going to call in an order for a Yak this morning, wonder if he got that in? [&:] He plans to put his Fugi 86 in it.

Then send an e-mail and at least get it in today so that you might have SOME leverage as to when you tried to order...
Wouldn't hurt to try...
