RE: any of you ever get surgery?
Never even gave it a thought electric but here is the remedy I used on my toenails, seeing as how when i was a kid I had a penchant for cutting my nails too short. Now I wanted to let them grow out but there was a 95% chance they would be ingrown.
Twice a day i would soak my foot/toes in a solution of epsom salt and water. I would then, once the skin was soft, "pop" the toenail up over the skin it was growing into with my knife. After a couple of weeks it grew out over the skin into the place it should be and now I have no problems. Just be very careful not to cut or shorten the nail when doing this, you need to keep it undamaged or you will be back to square one!
My Grandfather had amore unusual approach: Since the inks used in newspaper are known to kill bacteria, he would more or less grind the newspaper into a fine powder, or at least really teeny tiny pieces and "lift" that part of the nail away and stuff the newspaper underneath it, thereby forcing the nail to grow above the paper, and once the skin would grow back in under it the paper would be pushed out. I have never tried this because frankly it just sounds weird, but it worked great for him!

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
Had a galblader removed at Christmas a year and half ago. Pain started about 10am by 2pm I couldn't even looka at Christmas dinner. Tried to walk it off and sleep, No way. by 8pm Went to the ER withthe most excrusating pain I ever had. I even had trouble walking by my self. Three hours in the ER before they gave me some morphien, (That's Some Good Stuff) Pain was gone instantly. Felt good after operation but got dehydreated (my Fault) and my gout kicked in, Right foot. Stayed with me for 4 weeks.
The doctor had placed a drain in my right side, for 5 weeks. She said it might hurt when she pulled it out. She just grabed it and pulled this 9" plastid tube right out of my side, OUCH!
I would say Galblader and Kidney stones and apendix are about the most painful of all.

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
Had artery bypass. You do not want to know how bad the first 24 hours were, or coughing after having your chest sawed open. Or when a goofy nurse tried to move me up in bed by hooking me under the shoulders and jerking me up.
O yeah the first time I had to sneeze, I hugged my little pillow they give you, and said a string of cuss words no one should ever repeat. Then I sneezed, and well it was time for more morphine
It got better and more tolerable really fast by the end of 48 hours It was pretty ok.
Except sneezing....and coughing they make you cough.

Coughing is what the pillow is for. I had a Quadruple bypass in December 2010. Sneezing is not something you even want to think about.
How long did it take you to rest up from your Hospital stay? If you go to the Hospital, don't plan on getting any rest. They would come into my room at 2 am and wake me up to give me a sleeping pill.

For what it's worth, I learned a really effective way of not sneezing if you feel it coming and don't want to. Tickle the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Try it, it really does work.

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
I've had the surgery i previously stated before but i am also looking at hip and double knee surgery from getting hit and pinned by a minivan before christmas and another accident i had for the other knee. Also for my ankles for having Crepitus which is uneven cartiledge rubbing together and with pain it could lead to arthirtis or worse situations.. but anyways
Lady seperated my knee cap from the knee so it's basically just floating and cracked my hip when she hit me. Was walking across a parking lot and she flew back and hit me pinned me against a cart and when i fell i was still pinned so it caused more damage. I have to wear a specialty knee brace to keep my knee cap in place to stop further damage and have physical therapy ( can't afford it right now) to help correct it. so until then it looks like surgery in my future again for me lol

Nah just felt weird to finally have the skin under the nail as opposed to over it

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
To many to list, but the worst one was a 13+ hour surgery to go stabilize my back (again).
This time they had to go in threw my side (too much scare tissue in my back from previous surgeries to go in from there). remove one rib, remove L2 and L3. Install 3 titanium cages around the spinal cord. 2 rods, 8 bolts and a bone graft.
All of this after 9 months of flat bed rest with osteo and an unstable back.

You might have to get the procedure done twice if its infected. Once to get rid of the nail and the infection, then a few weeks later to make sure it never comes ingrown again. At least thats what they did for me.

Just a few years ago, after drapping my forearm across the prop of my airplane....30 stiches later. Good thing the plane was only at idle though. I remember
going into shock on the way to the ER, even saw the white light for a moment! :-) Still have the nice scars left from it.

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
This wasn't surgery, but is was painful as hell. I was a firefighter for 20 years. Early in my career, we could ride the tailboard to the fire. Late one night, we had a fire outside the city limits, and the family had a garden. The pumper backed into the yard and I jumped off. I soon found out that his tomato plants were held up with #5 re-bar...that's 5/8 inch diameter steel rods. I landed on one...it went through my turnout gearand my bluejeans, and penetrated about 6 inches. The next thing I did was very stupid, but I was running on pure adrenalin at the time. I had to come up on my tiptoes to get off the darned thing. I hobbled about 10 steps and fell to the ground. Had the police escorting the ambulance, and traffic was stopped at every intersection. I was scared as hell. It turned out that I was extremely lucky. 1/4 inch in one direction, and I would have been sterile, and 1/4 inch the other way, I would have severed the femoral artery. Doc said i would have bled to death in minutes....Needless to say, I get nervous around steel rods sticking out of the ground. The cheif kept the rod for several years, and the guys would cringe when he told the story....

My hospital stay was pretty good actually, except for one nurse that was always in a hurry, she ended up hurting me pretty badly trying to help me move up in bed. All of the others kept me pretty comfy.
I had a real hard time getting rest sleeping in my recliner. But finally managed my first real nights sleep after being home a week.
I was in the hospital for 5 days and ready to come home, had passed everything, breathing thing, walking, poo, blah, blah, blah. Was going to get out in record time. That night I spiked a fever of 102 and had developed pneumonia. So on the ninth day I was cleared and released. Returned to work after 7 weeks total.

With the new painkillers and improved anesthesia methods, the pain should be minimal. Most folks have a higher pain tolerance when they're young, but a lot of it is how you think about it. Pain clinics teach this, and it works most of the time.
I've had a few surgeries; appendix, broken ankle (compound), kidney donation, and rotator cuff repair. Worst pain was the broken ankle

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
don't f' with the toe surgery - seems simple enough - but if you're going in for the ingrown toe nail removal, they peel back the top of the nail and cut out the "root" cells that make toe nail - with the anathestic, no problem during surgery. About 4 hours later though is total different story. TAKE THE VICODIN NO MATTER WHAT. I forgot, and by about 6 hours after surgery I was out in the garage ready to take tin snips to my big toe - it felt like it was on fire. Wife called the doc, and they rushed in a Rx for percocet - really nice stuff by the way.
The other one you just gotta say NO to is tonsil removal if you're over 30. It hurts like a mother, for about a solid week. Made the mistake of doing that along with a deviated septum and a little turbinids reduction. Had plastic tubes shoved up my nose and a bleeding throat for 5 days. Was on the liquid Codone every 4 hours for the entire time. I was stoned out of my gord, but still in total pain. Was the crappiest thing I ever went thru (yeah worse than the toe story by order of 1000x or so).
Other than that - shoulder surgery (artho, not the open filet version) is a breeze - a bit uncomfy trying to sleep with the sling for a week or two. Lasek - other than the extreme sensitivity to light for the first 12 hours - it's a no brainer. And gettin the Vasecto - doc gave me the scissors - 1/2 day with an ice pack and back in the saddle.
rule of thumb - if they mess with an organ - expect to just feel like crap for quite awhile afterwards, if they cut into muscle/general tissue removal - gonna heal pretty quick (with a day or two of pain meds you'd barely notice), if they get into tendons/ligaments - gonna hurt real bad for a couple days and then will be minor annoyance pain for about 6 months to a year, if they are messing with bones - same thing as tendon/ligament, but after effects probably about 1/3 as long. IMHO

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
oh yeah - had the in grown toe nail surgery twice - got the fungus to go with it, so extenuating circumstances that just made it not heal right. so now about every 4 months I get this 1/2 inch long spur that grows into the side of my toe. Once I can start feeling it on the bottom of my toe, I cut it away from the rest of the nail, grab a pair of pliers from the RC kit and pull it out. And yes, pain is a purely perception thing - that's why the drugs work so well. Anxiety / fear are always a bigger problem than the actual pain of the event. If it don't kill ya (and it's not back surgery - doesn't seem to ever work perfectly), you'll probably end up stronger for it.

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
You should be fine with the surgery. In and out.
I had both of my big toenails removed at once by a Navy Corpsman in 1981. Back in that day, the corpsman who did the proceedure tried to numb both toes with Novacane, but it did not work (3 shots later, and no freezing spray) I still felt everything. After his feeble attempt at numbing my toes, the Corpsman then commenced to cut both toenails right down the center and then with a surgical pliers, commenced to ripping both nails completly out. Fun times, no meds, and when my tourture was done, I asked for some meds or even cruches, the corpsman said, "You walked in here on your own, you'll walk out"... From that point on, I learned the secret to not getting ingrown toenails and avoiding Navy Corpsman, was to not cut them too short. Never want to go through that again. [:@]
Since that time I've had a few surgeries but nothing compared to my first one. Two hernias, left and right, Back surgery Microdiscectomy L5-S1, and recently Bunyonectomy right foot. For me, the bunyonectomy on my right foot took, (is taking) the longest to heal, 6 weeks and running and it's still swolen and very sore.

Electric 68, you have gotten the experiences of a number of individuals myself included. The person you really need to talk to is your own doctor.
There are many, many different surgical procedures and also people react in different ways. Your doctor should be able to taylor his response to the case of most interest to you- yours.

RE: any of you ever get surgery?
laser surgery on my DVT, it was a dozen shots of anestetic into the vein (mind you from my ankle to my crotch, a hundred liquid injections into the tisue, and i heard the liquid enter my viens in my ears, they heard nothing, it was LOUD to me, they then put the lazer wire above my ankle slowly moving it to my crotch pushing on my leg with a ultrasound scanner, then then slowly started cooking thier way down, the skin was numb, the muscle and vein wasnt, so it hurr and stung like fire, i also heard and felt and tasted my blood boiling, it smelled and tasted like burning hair, pork, and well... me, a hour later it was done, i then had to walk for a hour immediatly, not horrible but god that was irritating
well worth it, it was making me ill and in extreme cases could have killed me.
i also dont get cavities worked on with novicaine, just have them drilled on ol-naturale. (only had two.... so far.)
