Is this your first plane? This was my second plane and I love it. I got tired of it's slow can motor so I bought a 50 dollar Himax brushless motor and it's a totally different plane if I put a large enough prop on it I could hover with an 8 cell HEcell 1000mah pack. Make sure you use the GWS glue on the fuselage and other parts that need to give just a little other then that the parts that need to be stiff like the balsa stick so forth. Here is a building tip for the GWS glue. Apply it then put the pieces together then pull them apart. Wait 5 minutes then put the pieces back together and in 30 minutes it's dry not fully cured but good enough to keep buidling. And it's not GWS glue it's contact cement. Anything else I can help with?

If you want cheap performance, just go to li-poly. But you will only get 15-20 flights out of a motor on a 3-cell pack. Make sure you get the CG right, and make sure the battery can not slide back in-flight. This bird SUCKS when it is tail heavy. I cant tell you how many times I had to bring one in for a buddy that was flying then the battery would slide back and he would holler for me. Full power and full down to get it on the ground......... Can you tell that I dont like this plane when it is tail heavy ?????.
On the other hand, I have retracts on mine and love it. I was also the first to put it on a single float, and love that too. It is a blast to fly off the water.

Sorry I left that out. You will need the Himax with a brushless ESC(more expensive) and a higher amperage battery unless you alrady have something with more then 15 amps. And yes you probably could just toss it in there my CG was still right on. The servos and the receiver should be fine with the set up just make sure your servos are all working properly and do a range check because these things are fast!!! Later.

The 2/3 is is saying that the battery is 2/3rds the size of a regular AA battery. If you only have a 100 mah then that is a major problem. It will now provide the power you need for this motor. You will burn that pack up real quick. I am thinking that it must be a 1000 mah pack or you would never get it off the ground.

Is there ever a drawback to using a larger ESC? They all seem to be pretty light, and priced similarly, why not default to the larger ICS-300E instead of the 100E?

Larger ESC is not a problem and many people opt for the safety margin. I regularly use a 30A ESC on speed 400's and such and the couple extra grams is nothing.

jimmy,
take your time. Use some lightweight spackle to fill the dipples/holes. Sand where needed. Forgo the cheesy looking canopy decals and use paint instead. Add a few scale details and it will look great. Add a BL setup and it will fly great.
