RE: Official Hobby Zone
AH i see...what a bummer.
It get so windy here that the plane doesnt fly well at 60% so i just keep it pinned.
Got a brushless sitting here. Waiting on the motor mount and more cash. Gonna build a new cub with ailerons and let my girls kids play with the old guy

Oh yeah, that wind thing...seems like wind and light electric models don't really go together. Once you get a brushless outrunner motor on your cub, you'll be burning holes in the sky. It's a lot better than the stock tin can.
Still gotta watch those nose first landings....I did that the other day and just got done changing the motor shaft and prop adapter. Oh well, at least I din't total it. I've got a stock lenght aileron wing on mine now. It's OK but I'm going to build another one, clipped and less dihedral so it'll trun and roll a little quicker.
Keep her in the air....

RE: Official Hobby Zone
So, I am a newb. I let my brother in law try flying my SC first and he crashed it into a tree []. It was too high up for us to get it down, so I had to wait until a storm came through and the wind blew it down. All that rain and wind couldn't have been good for the electrical components, which brings me to my problem/question.
After I got the SC down, I tried to see if it would work, but no dice. When I plug the battery into the charger, the charger blinks red 3 times, and then nothing...
Any advice or diagnostics? Do I need a new battery? New Motor?

If it's a Lipo then it's probably dead. Battery drained to far and now can't be recharged safely.
Head on over to Hobbypartz and by a couple of $8 replacements.

I bought a Blue Lipo 3-Cell 1300mAh 3S1P 11.1v 25C RC Battery from Hobbypartz. It is a better price than the Hobbyzone battery. Hopefully it fits inside the space for the battery in the SC.

What do you mean by less dihedral? Like I said I'm a newb...
I know what dihedral is with respect to the upward angle of an aircrafts wings...but what does that have to do with a battery??

RE: Official Hobby Zone
Dihedral is the angle of divergance of both wings from the horizontal plane....well, here's a link or two that will make it much easier to understand than I ever could.
http://www.google.com/search?q=dihed...A&ved=0CCsQsAQ
This second link is really very good at explaining why trainer aircraft work as well as they do, and why most have a high wing configuration.
http://www.aeroexperiments.org/AEPpendulum.shtml follow the links in the article. If you study these articles it will give you a new understanding of what makes an aircraft fly and handle the way they do.
Hope that helps,
Bert

Hey Wopac,
I'll probably do it the easy way. Run it througn a table saw. Foam cuts pretty easy.
I'll probably put a groove in the bottom to run the aileron servo lead wires and add a graphite spar of some type.

RE: Official Hobby Zone
twoslick,
Go to Ebay right now. Search "Keychain camera" and theres one on there for 99cents. You can get them dirt cheap on ebay. It looks like a remote control for a car alarm. Get yours now. I velcro mine to the cub and have a blast with it.
Wilbur,
I don't usually charge my lipos if they were charged and sat. (i know some say u should store them at less than full)... but I fly so often, that I charge when I get home, and go flying - 2 batts for the supercub and 2 batts for a warbird usually just about every week if not every other week.
I even took my cub and FW-190 to the park after work and snuck in a couple of batteries worth of flight time yesterday on the way home too!!
Do you guys sometimes just travel around with a supercub in your trunk and fly outside the weekend? I do. The cub can just about land anywhere. How many flights is enough for some of you? Two batteries? Three? How bad is your addiction?

It'll fit, with some carving out of the foam at one end. Also do yourself a favour and get a good charger, like the Thunder AC6 from those guys, the stock one is crappola..

Okay, so Ibought the Blue Lipo 3-Cell 1300mAh 3S1P 11.1v 25C RC Battery from Hobbypartz, but when I went to connect it to the Super Cub, I ran into a problem. The connector for the Blue Lipo appears different than the connector for the Hobbyzone Lipo. Attached are images showing this. Can I get around this problem, or am I SOL and just need to order stock Hobbyzone batteries to put in the Cub?

RE: Official Hobby Zone
Your battery has what appears to be 3mm Bullet Connectors.
I had the same problem when I got batteries for my E-flite 25 Size J-3 Cub ARF.
Fortunately, you're not SOL.
You'll need to get some Hobbyzone/E-flite EC3 female connectors - shown here http://secure.hobbyzone.com/EFLAEC302.html
This will require you to cut off the bullet connectors and solder the EC3's to the battery leads. Make SURE that you follow the instructions and get your polarity right.
Most well-stocked hobby shops should have these. If not, they're available from a bunch of on-line stores.
Good luck!

RE: Official Hobby Zone
No way to make the two different plugs mate.
Best bet is to buy some EC3 connedtors from Horizon Hobby and solder them on yourself.
Or switch every thing over to Deans pinsor use the brand that comes on those batteries you bought. They are all available from respective companies.
Soldering isn't all that hard. Heck I just started doing them myself. Follow the instructions in the video below and you'll be good to go.

Buy the EC3 connectors here.

You can get good solder and a soldering iron at Radio Shack. Buy the 60/40 rosen core.
Personally, I use a plain old 40 watt pencil style soldering iron. You can get them at most auto parts stores.

RE: Official Hobby Zone
One thing I forgot to mention is that since your battery is a LiPO, it probably has some charge on it when shipped.
Therefore, don't let the bare ends of the wires, or the connector ends (once they're soldered on to the leads) touch one another.
If you do, you'll get a very nice electrical flash and "pop" which will probably scare the "S" (from your SOL) out of you!
Does it sound like I speak fromexperience???

RE: Official Hobby Zone
I am told and it seems to be working for me, that the best way to avoid having the wires short out, is to cut and solder one at a time.
Icut the positive lead from the plug that I'm going to replace. Then I solder on the new metal fitting. After that is soldered on you put it into the EC3 plasticconnector (while it is still warm) to prevent it from touching the negitive wire when you solder that one.
The reason to do the positive lead first is because that wire will go into the odd shaped hole in the plastic plug. It just seems to be easier to remember to always do the positive first and put it in the odd shaped hole. That's what I was told...makes sense to me.
I tested my batteries in flight this week and all five performed just fine. BTW, I had trouble with Hobby Partz ordering system, canceled with them and went back to buying the blue batteries from Hobby King. The Zippys seem like fantastic batteries. From what I can tell so far, the Zippys charge up and perform as good or better than those I bought from Horizon Hobby.

I'm just a rookie so take what Isay with a grain of salt...
