Default Flyzone J3 Piper Cub ordered

I flew nitro planes about seven years ago and and got out and now want back in the hooby. I read a good review on this plane this morning and decided to order it. Now I have stumbled across two not so flattering reviews. Mostly these reviews say the Flyzone Cub is too heavy at 20.75 oz. with the 36 incn wingspan. Anybody here flown this Cub and if so what is your opinion on it? If I end up doing some mod with a stronger motor no big deal. Live and learn.

WHy didn't you save yourself some money and just order the Exceed Piper Cub, which has nothing but good reviews. I have one, it flew great out of the box and I have since upgraded to brushless, because that's the way we roll on RCU

Here it is stock

Here it is with the brushless upgrade. Very windy that day so the flight is very crazy.

PS, my 9 year old son does his best with the cam. lol

Actually I did look at the Exceed Cub but I wanted something a little bigger. I've had airplanes before that had to have mods done before they flew to the best of their potential. Not saying that makes me happy.

The wingspan of the Exceed cub is 1.5" larger than the Flyzone Cub.
I like modding planes a little, because parts from Hobbycity are so CHEAP, it makes it fun

Sorry to hear about your recent purchase. This plane is not the best. We have a good sized forum on the subject. It does fly and fly well if all you like to do is laze around the field. The stock motor is way underpowered. You must get all the speed possible before lift off and then ease into the elevator. Do a search for the J-3 cub by Hobbico on this forum and read through it. Talent 5 has upgraded his with much success to a brushless set up. You will definitely want to reinforce the plane with packing tape or carbon fiber. I used clear packing tape with good results.

The plane is nice to fly around if you understand it's lack of power. It flies scale and is not an aerobat. You can get it to loop and roll with altitude and stall turns are fun as is dead stick landing. Just read the forums and prepare yourself for the first flight. If you have a successful maiden, you will be in the minority.

Hope all goes well.

Derek speaks the truth. Personally I would take it back and get a HZ Supercub instead. My
Flyzone cub has been rebuilt and rebuilt and has a total of 2 minutes of flight time in the air
in the last year and a half since I bought it Feb 2008. This plane sucks! Read our threads on
this plane and others so you can learn what planes to buy and not buy. Read, read, read!

[8D] bandit, love your indomitable spirit. Fortunately, I had enough flying experience before buying the Cub that, along with my carbon fiber structural reinforcement experiences, except for the lack of a brushless inrunner motor that will eventually be installed, my FZ Cub is a real killer.

If it wasn't so pretty I wouldn't like it so much. I have made my repairs visible enough to be useful as conversational topics about crashing and repairing excitement.

With powerful 1.5 - 2 ounce LiPos the little ship flies almost up to my expectations. As a now totally committed fighter pilot my use of the Cub will be to allow it to continue to hang in the garage to be used only as a static teaching aid until I finally get around to "souping" it up.

Hey Time Bandit ... I am a lover of the Hobbico Flyzone J-3 Cub. What I did was only to swap out the Brushed Motor for a Hobbycity Brushless 380 motor that cost me $26.29 which included shipping. With that motor and a lipo battery, it changed the Cub to some kind of Extreme Cub. I have included a short video of the power. I didn't need to do any reinforcing to the plane. Also, the plane become very acrobatic and zippy with the motor. But whatever you decide to do hope your happy with aircraft.

Talent I sent you a PM about the mods you did check it out PLEASE!!!!!! Have you had trouble with the struts staying screwed to the wings?? I'm not really impressed with the way they are attached and I'm looking for a better way to attach them, any thoughts?

Time Bandit, what I did was put some hot glue in the Strut holes on both ends and immediately screwed in the screws and hadn't had any issues and I have over 100 flights on the Cub now.

so,
i get this rtf cub from flysone that got more weights added to it than an ocean liner anchor (nose had three ounces, tail two, wings when opened up had all kinds od strange debris that could only be intended to be balance. ) i did fly it few times but never did get it to trim right. i decided to convert it with an old radian glider wing that i added by splicing the cub cente section and installed a thermos botle liner as the nose. looks like a turbo cub now. see the link of my first flight. i used the same balancing points as the cub came with. didnt need to do much re arranging of the esc, battery, except that i lengthened the leads of the esc so that it was in the cockpit. flys like a cub and a glider. put a folding prop on it also.

da!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
