Allright, i admit it.
i'm looking more and more at those planes and after seeing one at the field
performing so well, i've made my mind up. third plane will be a profile for sure.
My second plane was an ultrastick60/saito100 on which i had 5 gallons sticktime on it and
felt comfortable with it doing pattern style flying, not much 3d though.
a tree ate it and the saito100 is in need of a new plane.
While reading and searching the profiles here, i get a bit of confused.
there are plenty of them, and all seem to have more of this but less of that
ability.
so what am i looking for to choose one carefully?
I'm currently building a contender as my first kit and it's going well but slow.
I would prefer an arf profile but would build one if not available as arf.
I don't like the morris knife.
I like the balsanova, sudokoi and the topcap.
I love the new omp bipe and the katana.
but that's just for looks, i would like to match the plane to my saito100 as good as possible.
I guess i just need a good input here on what to look for.
thanks, pat

Unless you are familiar with biplanes I would go with something else. Biplanes have a big disorientation effect. I have OMPs 65" yak with a saito 100. It flies great, hovers almost hands off. Everyone at the field loves this plane. Lighten the tail a little while building otherwise you will end up like me with 3 ounces on the nose.

Everything will be preset via laser parts and plan alignment for the new OMP bipe. If you are newer to 3d however I would recommend the 65" yak for the Saito 100. I little more stable and lighter on the wing. The bipe is designed to be a notch up on the agility scale.

You are on the road to R/C enlightenment.
Follow your heart right to that omp bipe and it will lead you to a better place!

The bipe is a big baby. At 5.5 lbs it's perfect for Saito 100.
but that's just for looks, i would like to match the plane to my saito100 as good as possible.
Dion, your web site says 6.5 lbs on the bipe? Anyway, I am sure the Accel Katana 90 ARF and the OMP bipe kit are both good birds. Neither one is available yet, but I have heard more (all good) about the Katana than I have the Bipe. However, you did say that you perfer an ARF. Ball is in your court and I wish you all the luck. I think any way you go here is a good one.

If "I" were you I would build the bipe and if "I" wanted an ARF "I" would get the katana GS70. The vid for the bipe is great and I will be building it after I finish my mojo.

thanks guys,
lot's of biplane lovers here, eh? i too love biplanes but am not familiar with flying or
building one.
I'm new to 3d and building.
I'm just finishing up a contender kit and learned allot from my errors and
asking in the kit forum. (it's a builders kit and doesn't
have instructions how to do..., just the building order)
maybe profiles are much faster and easier to build.
'nother question, is the tower fun51 kit any good? the price sure is ($40)
and i have a magnum 40 collectiong dust.

Id go with the Kat 70
Ive just got my second Kat40 now (after running the first through its usable life cycle) an absolutely love it. Cant wait for the 70 to arrive, should be here before to many more weeks. Id take another look at the bipe farther down the road. The Kat 70 at $200 will be hard to beat. www.AccelHobby.com
Luck with whatever you purchase.
Oh btw Id pass on the tower 51 an the magnum engine.

As far as flying it, don't think for a second that you won't be able to handle it. It's not like a scale Ultimate, it's a profile and very lite. Watch the video too and you'll see how easy she it to land as well.

I've never owned a fun51, but from what I've heard it's not the most capable 3D plane around. The price is right, but there's a reason that it's so cheap! I would stay clear of it if I were you. If you are new to 3D, then I would suggest a Burrito. Check it out at www.swanyshouse.com. It's a quick build and a great platform to learn 3D on. I also hear that the OMP Edge is a good 3D trainer.
As for the Magnum 40, I'm not sure if it will have enough power to perform 3D as well as you might want to. Most people outfit their profile planes with engines in the 46 to 50 size range. You'll need as much power as possible to be able to get out of a bad situation.
All of this is simply my opinion. Do a little research before you make up your mind.

I'm on my second AccelHobby.com plane too. I have the white Katana GS 40. (I also got a Saito 100 for Christmas.
)
I love the Ultimate (had a few different ones), but Bipes are different. Not harder or worse, just different. I watched Mike's video, and the 10-300 looks great, and I'll probably build one someday, but look at how the inverted harrier is. As the plane nears a 45 degree angle, it drops off. That is the stigma of bipes and 3D. As the AOA reaches 45 degrees inverted, the top wing completely washes out the lower wing. The only way to stop this is to change the stagger or spacing. That is why the Tensor is so good. Proportionally, the spacing is massive, and no stagger to speak of. Maybe OMP will get us a built up Tensor to try out. For great 3D, monoplanes are easier to learn on.
Also, a deadstick can be a challenge on a bipe. The drag of the top wing can cause it to drop out of the sky as airspeed falls off quick. I'm not saying that the OMP does this, but a dead bipe can be a challenge. Maybe someone flying one could let us know how it acts when dead.
For $199, the Kat 70 will be hard to beat for a Saito 100. I'm on the waiting list. The "Slow Boat From China" is said to be within 2 weeks of harbor. I'm gonna slap the 100 on the test stand and git-r-ready!
If you have a 46 size 2 stroke or 70 size 4 stroke available, the Burrito builds in a flash, and is as solid as a 3D trainer gets. That is, unless you really want an ARF.
Let us all know what you decide!

From: Beavercreek, OH,
All great advice from ProBros above. I'd swear you must be a sponsored accel pilot TailTwister!
Here's the skinny on the OMP bipe. It's much more stable than most bipes as that's pretty much my standard for designs and it shows in the rest of my designs. Don't judge inverted harriers by the OMP video, I can hardly do them at all and was struggling just to do that! That's something I'm going to work on this year though. I will say the bipe is pretty easy to build as described above with the conventional foam core fuse we are now known for and the rest is laser cut parts for the most part. But...........Razorback pretty much hits the nail in that you should really first decide your skill and requirements for a plane and then choose from there.
Bottomline is if you are NEW to 3d then go for a good 3d profile trainer. There are several good ones out there from OMP, Swanny, and Morris. Once you get past the initial 3d stage then step up to something more wild like a Yak 54, bipe, or Katana any size.
Oh, and the OMP bipe is 6.25 lbs and targets a .91 2-stroke or good .91-100 FS engine for all out 3d performance. The bipe in the vid was flown with a MDS .68 which I happen to luckily have a real good one.

Me like Ultimates...
No kidding though. Most monoplanes are easier to fly than most biplanes. That's what I was trying to get at.
Like I said, the OMP Ultimate will likely come to live at my house later this summer, and the Boxxer Bipe is all but required here. Jeremy was on his game with that one!
Bipes have a mystique and degree of romance to them. They remind us of the old barnstormer days, I guess. When I was first going to learn to fly RC, I had to get a bipe. I loved them as I do now. My Instructor soon squashed me with the recommendation of a trainer. Since then, I think I've been through 5 different bipes and loved them all. They are the most snappinest, tumblinest, spinninest things around and just plain fun. But, they can be a little tough to 3D. Not impossible, just can be tough.
Mike & Dion, does the Ulti have a kit price yet? Are they in?
BTW, for the record, I am very unhappily employed at Wal*Mart, not Accel...[&o] Maybe I could slap a Wal*Mart logo on my plane and my boss would treat me better? OK, manybe not...

All info/pricing here: http://ohiomodelplanes.com/50ultimate/
We put a date of Jan 21 for shipment, but we may beat that.
Boxxer will be pretty close to that date too. Still working on exact pricing for that.

Just ordered the bipe, YAY!. I'm a bipe lover.
I'm wondering what kind of servos and control horns are recommended,
my 4 Hitec HS-635HB used to be in my ustick60 wing and stripped all the time for
no apparent reason. they where already in for service. I put one of them
in my pt-40/JEN56 to break in the engine and lost the plane due to that servo
stripping gears again on the aileron.
Guess i'm out of luck with these.

Thanks for your order Miami and welcome to the world of OMP.
Mike will answer your servo questions tomorrow. But I think he said 90 oz all the way around is real good for the 10-300.

Yes, 90 oz would be the best choice for top performance on the bipe. There are lots of good choices out there for 6v battery operation.
Hey Tailtwister, I dream of being a Walmart greeter when I retire from the Air Force! Doesn't Walmart carry the park flyer commander type planes now? Maybe you could be a sponsored pilot for Walmart! LOL

They have stuff like that for Christmas. Nothing I'd be caught dead flying, though... OK, except the little infared UFO thing I bought my son. He loves to fly that, and so do I. He is two, and as far as he thinks, he's hovering just like me.
And if Wal*Mart won't have a NASCAR driver, they won't have me either.[&o]
Being a Wal*Mart greeter gets easier each year. First we got a couple with disabilities, that could not stand. Then they decided that they couldn't talk either. We've got folks standing there half a sleep making $9.00 per hour. Somehow, I don't see you as a greeter Mike.
Miami, do a build thread when you get the kit. It looks like an interesting plane. I can't wait to hear what a newer 3D pilot thinks about the OMP Ultimate.
