Default Rain Idiot

I am such an idiot.... I loaded my car up with planes this morning.... I was gonna sneak in a flight before the rain hit... Well... about 11:45, It was lunch time so I headed for the car... It was begining to mist....

I thought what the hell...

so out the field I went... Maybe it wasn't raining out there.... 5 minutes later, I get to the field... just barely misting...

so I thought... what the hell...

I jumped out of my car, fueled up the little taco and to skys she took..... starting to sprinkle now..... Well... I just kept flying her.... and it just kept sprinkling... never more that a steady sprinkle I told myself...

I few out the tank... and rain was begining to drip from the bill of my hat...

so I thought.... what the hell...

And fueled her up again and flew 'er like a 3d maniac.... Loved it... harriered all around the field... Getting better with the belly facing me... touch the tail... Knife edge loops... right in for a nice tail first landing...

Sometimes one must question their sanity.

Default Rain Idiot?

You're not an idiot, you're an addict. Way to go!

I've tried the same thing, only got soaked to the skin when the mist turned into an allout downpour while I was in the air. I lucked out and got it down in one piece (just dumb luck). It wasn't a pretty landing by any stretch of the imagination, but it served the purpose. Of course I got drenched in the process and caught h*** from my better half when I got home, but all in all, it was worth it for the two flights I did get in before the clouds opened up. The plane (a GP Fun One) didn't seem any the worse for the experience.

Idiot,no way,let me tell you about and idiot.Every Sunday myself,my two boys, and my 16 yr.old neighbor go flying.Well this past Sunday it was about 40 degrees, and drizzling all day,my friend, lets just call him Jimmy, comes by long faced because of the weather.Suddenly he says lets fly the Pizza Box across the street in the feild, thinking he was joking I said ok.Next thing I know we are putting the 8uaps in a zip lock bag,and fueling up the PBF.By this time it got a little wetter and and a little colder.I opted to watch. It was quite a sight to see the rain dripping off his hair while he launched the PBF off of a resin chair,it was too slippery to hand launch,I called my wife out and said now that's addicted.I know 35 degrees is not cold for a lot of you,but here in Louisiana,35 degrees in the rain is COLD!Luckily the radio stayed dry in the bag.

I wear glasses... You gotta wear a hat and keep your face out of the rain... Once those glasses get hosed.. You're done big time!!!

Thanks for all the encouraging posts guys....

Default Rain? What the hell is that?

Swany Baby! PBF's are waterproof. And so is monocoat. not to mention most all rainy days you will get the field to your self! And do you know why that is? Well I'll tell you, it's beacause most 150-200 member clubs have only 5 or so REAL hardcore flyers like (YOURSELF) that have the guts to say "WHAT THE HELL" remember this: "No rain, no pain.... No pain no gain" well it's sounds cool to me take a look at my thread "flew my X-box today" It was ready to fly, It just happened to be raining and very windy that day and who cares, we went anyway! IDOT? NO ! HARDCORE FLYER? YES! ............. BENDER :drowning:

Hey, didn't you guys hear about my invention of the totally waterproof plane? You can fly this thing underwater if you want. I also invented a waterproof transmitter. Guess I'll have to invent some eyeglass windshield wipers for Paul. Naw, it might be simpler to just have him get laser surgery! Heck, I invented that machine too! Too bad this isn't a true story, if so I'd be a rich man! LOL

Try gilding in the rain... no chance to have it hit your back, its in the face and to make it worse adds weight to your glider and takes upto 30% of your lift away from the screwed up section.
Then it gets colder and turns to hail, you either take the pain and fly or land. even if you land you still get stung on the way down

Default Rain & Snow

Every year my club has what is affectionately called the "Brass Monkey" Fun-fly, supposed to be held on January 1st, no matter what (unless it is truly unsafe to fly; lightning, gale winds ...)

This year in our part of N.J. it was raining cats and dogs on the 1st. Being a new member of the club, I figured no matter what meant no matter what, so I loaded the "beater" into the truck and off I went. I knew things were bad when the access road to our field was completely under water!

About a dozen of us showed up at the field, even thought the event was officially canceled. About (4) of us went up (including me) and ran the contest. Interesting dynamics of the rain hitting and rolling off the wing with a plastic cup holding an egg strapped to your wing! Did I mention the landing part of the fun-fly was dead-stick?

It took about 2 days with a box fan directed at the fuselage of my H9 EasyFly 40 (it survived the day) to completely dry it out. The contest was rerun on the following Sunday. This time, snow! Much more fun to fly in.

So now in my brief (8 month) flying career, I flown in rain and snow. I hope it is a long time before I fly in fire or ice!

I was flying the other day in a strong wind, with rain threatening. So mid flight it starts to rain and the wind REALLY picks up. My poor little 32 powered profile needed half throttle just to maintain position. then the rain turns to hail, so I figured I'd better try and land. I touched down at half throttle and a buddy grabbed the plane before it blew away. it was actually kinda cool! the only weird thing was it was the second flight on the plane so I guess things could have gone "terribly wrong." Still, thats what keeps it interesting........
