Just starting my new OMP kit and wondered what servos people were running.
Are mini's required and if so what are you having good success with?
Are standard servos OK too?
Anyone using a higher torque on the rudder?
Thanks

I'm using the 225s with metal gears for the tail and the regular ones for the wing. I saw Mike Pilketon at the Wram show this past Friday and he was using HS-81MG!! for the tail of the FF540 he had for display. I also heard people using standard servos with great results.
So it looks like you have some options...

I'm using all futaba 3004's and they work great. With a 50SX and mac's black muffler I had to put the rX and rx pack at the leading edge of wing to balance at the recommended range. I had to increase the width of the servo hole a little at the tail end of the fuse to fit the 3004's.

I have scorched 5, count them 5 HS-225mg's in my .40 size OMP 540p in 9 months. I have done everything to take as much load off the servo as possible. I use ball links on my surfaces for bind free movement. I do not have long arms on the servo, and the linkage is not on the inside hole of the control horns. Good mechanical advantage. Atv's are 100%. I still smoke the servos. I have lost 4 aileron servos, and 1 rudder servo. I do not do tail touches any more to be easier on my rudder servo. There are times when I might have my ailerons at full deflection for 30 sec in the flight regime under a load. After exchanges with Mike of Hitec, he said the motor is still a mini motor. It might be to much for the servo. I think he is right. You can search the Hitec forum under HS-225mg for the text. Hitec has honored their commitment and rebuilt the servos. But what happens when the year warranty is up? We shall see.
My point is if you are planning on wringing this thing out, you might consider a stronger servo. HS-81's? No way. For tamer flight the 225 would be fine. I am building another OMP 540 p and I am considering the new HS-5245 digitals. Maybe standards in the ailerons.
This is just one man's opinion.

Yeap! I burnt one 225 on my rudder too. But I had a long arm on it and since then, with a regular arm, I have no problems. Of course I have less than 30 flights on the whole package ( I hate this winter).
I considered the mini digitals too but they seemed expensive especially when you consider they are going into a $60 fun fly. I know, peace of mind is priceless but I'd rather bite the 2oz weight penalty and install standard servos which theoretically will give you the same peace of mind with way less $$$$
But like jess implied a lot will depend on the way you fly it!
Just my $0.02

Thanks for all the replies....I was thinking of going with 225mgs all around but the difference between them and the bunch of JR517's I have lying around is only 2 oz for four of them so I think I will just use the standards and not have the worry of the hitec's burning or locking up on me when I jam the sticks.

A slight correction on the servos in my personal FF540P. I am using HS85MG servos at all four locations and an HS-81 for the throttle. HS-85MG servos are rated the same torque as standards, weigh half that of standards and are faster. I wanted to try this knowing there was a risk. Many folks have reported mixed reviews with the 225s and the 85s. Personally I've used both flawlessly with no problems whatsoever. The HS85s have been in service since last summer and are still fine. Note that any servo taking a hard crash is going to strip gears. I saved probably 4 oz total versus 5 standards and that's 1/4 lb! Hey when you are on the extreme like me, it's a blast to try new things.
