I have a thing for bipes and I have a thing for profiles. All you kit bashers and scratch builders, would this be possible and would it fly worth a hoot? Just curious to see if I should persue it....

Shorten the chord on both wings a bit (not sure how much) and I bet it would work great........John

I'd think it'd be a hoot.... You'll have to cut out some wing area... either cord or span.... remember... you'll have twice the area now....

Naaaaaaaaaaa Just a bigger engine. With enough power you can fly a brick lol.

But Let Kevin take a look and see what he thinks . I also fancy Bi planes.

Billy - remember that 2 wings do not = twice the lift. I believe that you loose about 40% (you'd have to research it to get exact formula) of the effective wing area due to turbulence. The wings' blunt leading edges would probably make this even worse, though is doable. If I was going to do it, I'd change my foil some, then install outboard wing supports (between the wings) and develop some cabanes. The problem would be weight / wing loading / CG, though like I said, doable.

How about sliding the bottom one a bit backwards
and moving the top one a bit forward, you get better
lift , and definitely you need more power, dead sticks
is a falling rock I guess!!!

Staggering the wing does help eliminate some to the ineffectiveness of a bipe's lift, though little. Realize that there are so many other factors that have to be considered that it is almost impossible to clearly identify its potential flight characteristics via just a rendering. Its a heck of allot easier to do it in the computer graphics , though I too love bipes! I just don't believe that bipes should be a Fun Fly (IMO)

Maybe a
TopCap wing foil would work.

Goldberg (or Sig?) had a profile bipe, I think it was the bluehawk? Although I've not flown one, I've seen them thrashed pretty well and they seem to fly good. Mayby take some ques from this design?

That would be cool... Sorta do it backwards?? You always be chasing your tail.....just swap the wing and the horizontal stab....

Lone Star Balsa has the best balsa I've seen. If you want to really do a project right, call and order the 4 to 6 pound contest grade balsa. It's weight represents the weight per cubic foot, I think. Most LHS balsa is in the 7 to 10 pound range.

Otherwise, Balsa USA has some really good wood too.

The Sig Ultimate Fun Fly is a blast. It does not like the slow harriers, but is the snappinest, spinnnest, stick banginest plane I've flown. I've had 2 of them. It has a fairly thin chord for a fun fly. I think the area is somewhere between 800 and 900 squares. It weighs between 4.5 and 5 pounds.

Chip Hyde obviously thinks Bipes are good fun fly machines..... But what does he know....

Now Paul - Chip Hyde has an awesome 3D Machine, though that guy, and the other TOC competitors, can make a trainer be an awesome 3D machine!
I just stated that you would want to change the foil to have less of a blunt leading edge, and IMO bipes don't make good Fun-Flies.

Yes - SIG has the Ultimate Bipe Fun-Fly, but its foil is different in comparison to other Fun-Flies.

Billy - I order my wood from Lone Star, and yes I would order the contest grade for the 1/16" sheeting. Last large order I got from Lone Star, the 1/16" x 3" balsa sheeting was a rock! Funny that the 1/16" x 4" balsa sheeting was real - real light. If you ask for contest, then you'll have a better idea for what you are getting. I don't use contest through-out though.

Chip who?

Just kidding. His isn't a 43 inch span though.

I like biplanes. I've had 2 Goldberg Ultimates and 2 Sig Ultimates. I'd really like a Dave Patrick one next. The Ultimate is a great mix of Mild to Wild. I also like the added drag. They slow down as quick as you pull the left stick. Extras and Edges seem to take forever to slow down. They are almost too clean in the air. The Ultimate is not "burdened" with such a problem.

As a fun fly, I've got no problem with the Sig. I just can't get a good harrier or elevator out of it. It rocks pretty good.

If you order from the "General Stock", you get whatever they have lying around. Ordering from the "Contest Grade" get's you much better wood. I'd use it for ribs and wing sheeting. It may not be suitable for fuselage sheeting, as there is so much stress. If you have a stick and sheet kind of tail, I'd use contest sheet there too.

For building C/L planes, I use that wood all through, but C/L planes don't have to snaproll, wall,or blender.

Build it Billy. Heck if the Wright brothers didnt try different designs where would we be now? Look at the Pizza Box Flyer. That defies all of the laws of lift. I have one and am building another one now. I for one would love to have a better flyin bipe. I have the Sig Ultimate and love it. It is one wild flying machine. I think with a little studying you could build a great plane.........John

Default Sig Ultimate Funfly Hover?

I've been flying a Sig Ultimate Funfly for several years....I have plenty of vertical with an OS 46 fx turning 11X3's or 11X4's....

I really like to yank and crank her, and even slow fly where its about to fall out of the sky....Snaps so hard it should explode...rolls are a blerrrr....Flat spins are more like spirals......

But what I can't do is hover the darn thing!

I can get it set up ok and maybe hover a little but when I need to correct, I get some awful wing rock....If I chase the wing rock, it gets worse.

Can anyone post a pic to prove the this bird will hover and/or Torque roll....

PS: Does flying the ultimate for 6 years as my primary yank and crank qualify me for the Brotherhood? It really has nine lives and has spent eight of those....Hehehe!

It wants to torque on my Saito 72 with a 14x4. It likes the burp throttle method. Just adding power has not helped me at all, it just climbs. Burping the throttle to the point of the plane bobbing up and down will get the torque going.

I have wondered if the two wings are blowing some turbulance on the stab, because a stationary hover is a real bear!

Mine flat spins good though. My CG is way back, elevator and rudder throw max, a few clicks of throttle, and she is flat as a pancake. It will not climb, however.

I've said before, this plane is the banginest, spinninest, and snappinnest plane I've seen.
