Latch, havent flown it yet since the repairs. I would have this weekend but the weather went to crap. Maybe next weekend will be better. Or maybe I'll get a chance to sneak off a little early one day this week

I have never tuned a MCP for my TT42's. I simply cut the 1.75" off of the Macs header and glue it into the can and they run so good at that length that I have never even had the desire to attempt to fine tune one.
But I have found that WC 15% runs great yet WC 10% runs like crap in these engines. I find it hard to believe that 5% would make that much of a difference but it does...atleast this brand of fuel on a TT42 w/ MCP.

Well, I installed the Rossi 53 and it has unbelievable vertical, however, the engine is too heavy and the plane wants to nose over when attempting to hover and needs a lot of down elevator inverted. I added weight to the tail but the plane did not like it.
Any ideas. ......... I was thinking of moving the battery pack behind the wing to get it to balance better, or move the elevator servo to the rear also; I already moved the rudder servo up next to the rudder.
Anyone out there using a heavier engine in one of these planes?
Right now I am not interested in another engine; I just want to figure out how to get this one to work.

I have the same problem. Mine wants to fall off to the right. It does it when hovering and when doing a landing at zero airspeed in the wind. I have a piped OS 40 FX on mine. Mine has weight in the tail too................John

Adding weight is like flying with the parking break on, one weak point of the magic is the fuseladge between the rear of the wing and the stab, if you put the pack and two servos in the tail and an heavy engine on the nose, it will be proned to breakage with a hard landing. you might try the following:
CF gear (use gear made for sig something extra from TnT)
Sullivan flex tank(1 or so oz lighter than a rigid tank)
feather throttle servo(save an oz or more and wont effect performance by moving aft)
dual elevator servos hs 85mg mounted under the horozontal stab(lighter and more torque than a std servo and will spread the weight out in the tail more)
this is probably stuff you have already heard but thought i would throw my 2cents in

I am in a quandry. I am trying to decide on either putting an OS 32sx approx 11.5 ounces with a Mac's 1 piece pipe or a Saito 40. The saito weighs in at 10.6 ounces. From my understanding from reading the treads the 32sx likes 10x3, 10x4, 10x5, and the 11x3 with the RPM's cranking. The saito from all I can find swings an 11x6 at around 10.5K. I think that the saito with a 11.5x4 would be a good combination and from all my understanding the 32sx and a 10x4 or 11x3 is a power house. I just dont want to be disappointed with my selection. I am trying to keep this thing as light as possible.

The Saito 40 sounds like a great choice to me as long as the weight you mentioned is accurate. I have a Webra 35 Aero that I'm going to use with the GAPP muffler system, it weighs 11 ounces total.

A little more info. I just looked at the Saito 40 on Horizon's site and the weight is listed at 10.6 ounces, which you already mentioned. I figure that weight is right on. There are many people out there flying the Magic 3D with .46 size engines. An OS .46fx with a header and mousse can will weigh around 15 ounces or so, so you will be way below that weight with the Saito. It should fly great with that engine as long as it has enough power, and that's something I'm not doubting.

Michael,
I see you got a chance to actually weigh it, that's great! We made those posts about the same time. If you go with the Saito make sure to let us know how the performance is. I would really be interested in hearing about it. What's the elevation where you live in Alaska?

I thought alot about the 46FX with the Mac's 1 piece pipe but at 15.4 ounces it is to heavy for what I am trying to do. The 46 with stock muffler is over 16 ounces. The Saito is really tempting but I would hate to throw away $189.00.

Wade,
At either one of our fields we are no more then a couple hundred feet above sea level. Low humidity and of course it never gets really hot hear. A hot summer day is 78 degrees. Even then we still have low humidity.

And the cool quiet sound of a saito at 1/4 throttle putting around in a harrier pass........I had a saito 45 on my magic for a little while, and needed bearings, so performance was a little down comared to the 11/6 prop. I was turning an 11/4 or an 11/3 to get the rapid throttle transition required for hovering/TR'n on 15% nitro. I'm sure some increases would be made with the new bearings and higher nitro. My magic was just at 4lbs with the saito, and it took close to full throttle to hover it. I had a TT36 (which I think is THE engine for this plane) running an 11/3 or 11/4 props. The plane was at 3 3/4 lbs with the 36, and performance was spectacular.

Is the Saito 45 heavier than the Saito 40? I think some of the older Saitos are heavier than some of the newer AAC ones. There's no doubt that the TT 36 Pro is a good choice, it's cheap, light, and powerful. Several guys have stated excellent performance with the TT 42 GP as well. You can probably get it for $50. I'd stick a mousse can on it to wake it up a little. The Webra 32 or the new 35 Aero would be a good choice. So would the OS 32. If you want ballistic performance put a Webra 50 Speed on it, sounds like it will be lighter than the OS 46 FX. Supposedly it weighs 11.3 ounces, I'm sure that's without muffler. The OS 46 FX weighs 13.2 ounces without muffler. Too many choices huh?

I was using the heli muffler for the TT engine, and it worked great. I also tried a mousse can, but the can volume of the can was too large. It had a funky transition, and flame out, especially when vertical. I've got a smaller can for it, but havent put it on a model to test with (can you say Fat Free Taco
)
If you run the 32 or 36, then you can run a 4 oz tank in place of the 6 oz, and save a little bit of loaded weight. Also put your battery either under the radio tray, or cut a hatch in the back of the plane to put it in the back half of the fuse.
Oh yeah, I got my TT36 at a swap meet practically NIB (was taken off a raptor to be replaced with a 50) for $25.00. The guy didnt realize you had to tighten the screw that holds the carb onto the engine to get it to run.........

Yep, I have a 4oz tank in mine with the 35 Aero. I should get a chance to fly it as soon as this wind settles down, really been blowing for the last several days.

keeping the CG as far back as possible helps a lot. moving the batery or one of the servos is a great way to get the CG back without adding weight. Not sure how inportant it is, but checking lateral ballance wouldn't hurt.

My new Magic is sitting in it's box waiting for me to get motivated. I have the following engines available:
OS 40 LA
OS 46 FX
OS 50 SX
OS 52 FS
Mac's pipes for all the 2 strokes.
I've been reading that the 46fx is too heavy. Ok. Will the LA with the pipe hover and pull it out?? Will the 52 fs do the same and does something about the 4 stroke overcome the weight disadvantage? Or do I need to work some more overtime...
