Default Sig Ultimate Fun Fly

Hey guys I was hoping someone could give me some good advice about the building and flying characteristic of the Sig Ultimate Fun Fly. I picked up the kit today and have an OS FX 46 to put on the model. I'm looking at the way the Elevator and Rudder servo mounts into the model with "tape" sorta scary. Any and all comments are welcome.
Thanks,
Victor

I'm wary of the servo tape as well, but I started thinking about the crashes I've seen at the field where people used servo tape. The tape stayed on the servos and ripped out the balsa where they were mounted.

My Ultimate FF is covered and ready for the radio gear. I think I'll go with the tape, and maybe add some kind of safety block as has been mentioned in other threads, because I don't know exactly how well the tape will stick to the plastic hatch covers compared to balsa.

I'm building Ultimate FF #2 for me. The first had a direct radio hit and went in full power (Rossi 45 APC 11x5) straight down. The airframe was quite literally shattered, but the servos held. I used the tape and GE 100% silicon glue. I just made a silicon filet around the servos and it held even in those circumstances. The plane had about 50 flights on it at the time.

Good luck

Hey Tail how did it fly? Are there anything you are going to do different this time around?

I added 3/4 of an inch to the rear of the elevators, for no apparent reason. The first flew great, but what the hey! My Rossi caused the plane to balance on the dot according to plans, but for my taste I did add 1 ounce tail lead. I'm going to use a ST 51 with an old U/C muffler that weighs 1/2 ounce. I'll lose about 3 ounces off the nose this way. I may also put a few 3/4 to 1 inch holes in the nose where the ply adds so much strength. I'll use a covering job like the box with Ultracote (one color basically) instead of the three color Century 21 fabric (fairly heavy) I had before. The plane is a blast to fly. When it got shot down I was a bit misty eyed (mostly for being pissed that the guy next to me on the line shot me down and I had the freq pin). He bought the plane. Within a week I had the new kit and was planning what to do. I just haven't focused on it until now. Frame up time is like it's an ARF. Covering couldn't be easier. I had dual rates. Low rate was the suggested #s then I added throw until it scared me a bit. High rate was lock to lock on everything. Close to 70 degrees on elevator acted like an airbrake so I backed it to around 55 or so. I did find an 8 ounce Sullivan "oval" tank that was fun because flight times were doubled. The tank was flat and long so it was close to the CG and had fairly little effect on flight. With green or pink fuel there was no reason to land for fuel checks. Just harrier on by and take a look. Then do a rudder turn around and go back. Full throttle up and snap, snap, snap. Tailslide down to 10 feet. Go level pull up into a 20 foot high stall turn then... Well you get the picture. I sware I could fly it in a high school gym no problem. Flapperons are cool, but the plane is pretty light on the wing anyway. Knife edge needed some programing to eliminate coupling, but not the worst. I hope to keep this one around a bit longer than the first. Go for it, you won't regret it.

If you loose power(dead stick) you ARE landing RIGHT THEN. It does NOT glide at all. As far as the taped servos.....I taped the servos on as per instructions then I cut a small slit in the plastic at each end of the servo and stuck a plastic pull tie through and around the servo and tightened it up. Works great. It might not be needed but it sure makes me feel better about it.....John

Thanks for the information. I just made one more trip to the Hobby Shop. I came back with a Saito 72. I figured since the OS FX 46 and the Saito 72 weigh the same I have nothing to loose. Does anyone have any ideas about which prop would give me the best performance the Saito and Ultimate Fun Fly have to offer?
Thank You,
Victor

Not sure about a 72 size prop, but I agree about the dead stick. The bipe glides like a brick with wings. Way too small wings. The drag is un real. Maybe an APC 14x4?
