Default Wing ID

I have a couple of composite wings, unifinished, that I need to identify what planes they might be from. A good friend of mine passed away about 10 months ago, and myself and a couple of other local club members have offered to help his fiance sell his collection of model items.

I'll have to try to get pictures of the wings in the next couple of days, but for now I can say that they both appear to be low wing type designs. One has turned up (or down, I only briefly looked at them) wing tips, curved, in sort of a hoerner wing tip or winglet type of end. One or both may have indentations for landing gear mounting for two piece gear, one mounted on each wing.

I know those descriptions are rather vague, but until I can get time to take some pics, it's the best i've got!

Also - there is a complete QM40 that's rather Rivets looking, T-tail low wing with a belly pan to meet minimum height requirements. Any thoughts on who's kit this might have been?

I've been away from racing for a few years, and am pretty out of date on such things. Thanks for any and all help!

This might be the T-Tail your talking about.

It is the "Sump ´N Else" from Big Bruce Racing Products

Hope it Helps.

That looks quite a bit like it, I'll have to check when I get home tonight. The horzontal stabilizer shape looks to be right on the money when compared to the one I've got. Thanks, and keep those ideas coming!

Does "Big Bruce Racing Products" have a website?

It's gratifying to see that people are using my photo and posting it on the web! Nice ego boost. I snapped the photo of the first Sump-N-Else in Phoenix.

Thanks!

the plane is darn near that one, but the landing gear is mounted directly to the wing on the bottom side, one separate leg for each wheel. The one in the pics uses what I would call a more conventional bent single piece sheet gear in the center.

Any other thoughts? It's probably older than 2005, it's been a few years since my buddy had been an active racer.

Thanks, Dan - I actually took a few minutes this morning on the way to work to take a few pics, so I'll be putting them up before too long, have to wade through all the fresh e-mails at work, etc..

OK - here's some pics (if this works out correctly).. The plane is the one in question, left and right side views. The belly pan is a full-width pan, not a skinny "fin" on the bottom of the wing to make height. The LG bolts to the wing directly, two pieces.

The wingtip and wing pic are one of the two wings I have, don't know what it's from. This one has a narrow ridge, fin, whatever, on the bottom to make minimum fuse height.

The other wing I don't have pics of - it's a straight TE, swept LE with tips that are round in front, meet the TE at pretty close to a 90 deg angle. I'm pretty sure it's intended for a low wing, the LG again mounts to the wing in two pieces, and it's got some dihedral molded in. It's got topside skin hinges molded in, also. I'll try for pics of it later, but like I said, I had to go to work..

The tail pic I just thought I'd throw in here, even though it's a Q500. It's a v-tail, with the V sort of buried in the fuse sides, rather than on top in a saddle. Anyone know what that might be? Too bad about the hangar rash on the LE of the right side tail, otherwise the plane's in great shape.

Thanks again, guys, and I hope these pictures work out!

That's what I've been wondering, too - it might just be, but again, it's been so long since I've raced, I'm not up on current kits. Last time I flew QM we used .15's..

It could be a couple of different ones.

Norm Johnson made a rivets a couple years back and this might be one of them. (most likely this is the case)

A second option is someone might have converted a QM15 Latsha rivets. Chip Hyde did this several years ago using a napier wing. This wing doesn't look like the Napier plan form so, I would guess it is the Norm Johnson version.

The wing with the turned up tips is from Lyle Larson's Kelly.

Hope this helps.

Dan - yes, it helps a lot. The plane is probably a few years old - Doug had an accident on one of the houses he was building, screwed up his leg very badly, and had to quit flying several years back.

What's a wing with some hangar rash like this worth? Maybe I should just hang on to them, put 'em to good use!

thanks again everyone,

Gordon
