i picked up a "goody bag" full of stuff and one of the things is a "strongbox". the paperwork shows it being used to hold the RX and battery sandwiched between layers of foam. seems like a good idea. will a lack of airflow around the RX harm it?

No, I wrap all my RX's in foam before installing.

Sometime ago I abandoned the practice of insulating Rx's aginst crash damage switching instead to industrial velcro CA'ed to the Rx bottoms and the floor or sides of the airframe.

vibration isolation proved a none issue and surprisingly crash damage did not notibly change.

Now having gone all 2.4 for some time and given the apparent bit of extra sensitivity to heat I never wrap rx's at all anymore. And this comes with the added benefit of much easier packaging of the components especially in the smaller airframes.

With the advent of 2.4 Ghz all manufacturers that I have seen, in instructions for their recievers
recommend not wrapping the unit.
This is because the voltage regulator may overheat thus the need for airflow through the fuselage. 
The rx operates at about 2.5 volts regardless of the input voltage 4.8 or 6.
Wrapping is ok for 72 Mhz or 27 Mhz  NOT 2.4 Ghz.

For the most part I don't insulate my RXs either. I do sometimes but just for different ways I may mount them. I still even make up a crash box for them, sometimes. Every plane I build is different and I have no hard or fast rules. Never had a RX over heat. Not that I know of anyway.

I'm still flying 72 MHZ and I do it as much because I always have and to add a layer of insulation from vibration. I know it's not likely that a plug will vibrate loose, but for a little foam,I like the insurance.

Correct, it sure doesn't hurt anything. Most of my planes are still on 72. Some of the RXs {Hitec} come with a foam wrap that velcros closed. I often use these foam wraps and add my own velcro the to the back and attach the RX with that onto a bulkhead. I find it easier to remove the RX that way. Over heating isn't a problem but I have also insulated the RX so much it took forever to remove if I wanted to make a set up change. The 2.4s I have just used velcro or double sided tape to install. The taqpe has a small rubber layer between the glue surfaces. So far no heating or vibration problems.

None of the Hitec 2.4 Rx's come with what Hitec used to call Rx blankets. I don,t know if they still package them with the 72's or not been a few years since I have bought a 72.

Insulating a Rx in climates that routinely reachs well over a hundred unless you keep the airplane out of the direct sun at all times between flights is a really bad idea, I don,t care what type or brand Rx and if its a 2.4 well thats a no brainer don,t do it. Heck that does even address the batteries and losses the guys never figure out or why their batteries suddenly seemed low. putting any electronics or batteries in bake ovens is a rotten plan.
