My table is 9' x 34", 2x6 frame set back 1" from the edge if the 7/8" 9 ply top; a material used for concrete forms, 4x4 legs cross frames 2x4 on 16" centers. the ply comes 4' wide so the 14" wide piece is a shelf below! It is big because I work with giant scale. What ever you use should be stiff enough not to bend! Plywood a 1/2" thick would work for most needs!!

How is your table built? I have mine built with 2x4 on edge, them 3/4 ply screwed to the 2x4's. Flat, level and strong enough to rebuild engines on. I also use drywall for building. I have not had any ridges or other bumps, or high spots form.

Buzz.

I personally like a product called Homasoate, bought it at Menards. You might look at it and see. Holds t-pins GREAT, after cutting to fit the table I tape the edges as they sort of soften or round a bit.. But this is my favorite table top surface so far..

I'm think that there may be part of your problem. My other hobby is model railroading, and the consensus is that particle board warps, shift, and degrades over time. I would get a solid or hollow core door blank and use that as your table top. I have read where by people both swear at and by each type, so there's probably not a lot of difference. Use drywall or Homasote over the door blank.

I've been building on a solid core door for many years. dead flat and took about 2 minutes to throw it on top of a couple of sawhorses. Go to Lowes or somewhere they sell them and ask if they have one that's been scratched up and can't be sold as new for a discount.

I use homasote, too.
