The two part clear coat I am using does not require a reducer, since it is pretty thin to begin with. (That's what the paint expet at the Auto store said). And it does put on a nice coat. But would it be best to thin it further? If so, can I use regular lacquer thinner? Reducer is $17.00 a can.

I work for a auto body supply... with out nowing the nmae brand and kind of clear coat, my advice would be not to reduce it. lacquer thinne should not be used at all. Almost all 2 part clears are acrylic urathane and lacquer is not good for them. if you want to thin it use urathane reducer

Patriot,
Take a look over in the jet forum for some paint questions, 90% say the exact opposite of what was just said here. When they talk about clear coating an airplane you will hear most of them say they reduce it from 100 - 200% so it gives a nice wet and even coat without putting alot of clear on the plane. I just cleared the fuse an canopy of one of my jets this past weekend and I reduced my clear by 150% and the finish came out beautiful without any runs. Also, as the gentlemen here says it depends on who's clear you are using. I use sikkens (lesonol) clear and which is a 2 part clear. Most others use PPG clear which is also a 2 part reducer. Whatever you do, don't use lacquer thinner. The reducer I use is only 5.00 a pint and that is more than enough to clear an entire plane.
