Default Nitrate Dope thinner

I am preparing to cover my latest model (an old RCM Sportster) with Sig Coverall. But I'm not sure what or how much thinner to use. I have read that Acetone or mineral spirits should be used. Which is correct?
Thanks in advance,
Toddly1

Use Acetone or a high grade lacquer thinner. Mineral spirits are for enamel type paints. Thin it just so it brushes easy, if spraying probably close to 50% .A lot depends on how thick your dope is to start with. I have some that is like tar,WWII Army surplus!!

MEK is the only thinner I have used succesfully with dope. Laquer thinner and acetone work with various results.
Available at your local hardware store.

Home Depot lacquer thinner works fine, but you can always go to an automotive paint store or supply store for aircraft and get the good stuff.

Hey guys,

I've got a question while we're at it here. I once tried to thin dope with laquer thinner, and it turned to a cottage cheese like consistancy. I am not doubting that you guys had luck with it as thinner, I just wonder if anybody might tell me what may have happened. I have always used MEK with good results, and never did try laquer thinner again. I may now as it's evaporation rate is slower than MEK. Thanks.

Old body shop owner told me to add thinner a little at a time as sometimes he said it would "shock" if added too fast. Who knows? I have always used hi-grade or dope thinner. big max 1935

Sure the beer can wasn't sitting next to the one with lacquer thinner!?

Like Bigmax says, a little at a time does the trick, and always stirring the contents at the same time.

Laquer thinner works fine just keep stirring it till it turn perfectly clear again just look at it and make sure it is blended in, or you can use the Sig thinner at $9.00 a quart. at that I am willing to stir a little. good luck

1/4 flyboy, thanks, Ace hardware thinner is a lot less.

Big Max, thank you, I tried it mixing slowly, and it worked fine. I did just "dump in" the thinner when I tried it before.

Walter D- I don't know how your beer can would be sitting next to my thinner on my work bench. Are you sure your thinner wasn't a little to close to your beer can? :bananahea

Default Alright, UNCLE-UNCLE!!!

If you mean water, no. Thanks, I got my answer. I was just pouring it into the dope to fast. When I use MEK i don't have that problem. HOWEVER MEK has a much faster drying rate, so it is not suitable for unexperienced dopers.

I've always just bought real honest to goodness dope thinner by the gallon from an aircraft supply house. It always works, and the cost by the gallon isn't bad at all...of course, it's been a while since I've bought any.

Cheers, Nigel
