Since this motor has never been ran, 26 years old, what do I do with it to get it flight ready? Could I just spray some WD-4o in it and start it?

I'd take one of the covers off the carb to make sure the diaphrams are soft and supple, not stiff. If they're stiff, you can get a carb kit from the local saw/mower shop. I've never tried the wd 40 . I'd go through the procedure I pointed out above and let er rip. Do they give an indication of the prop size? I have no idea because of the reduction drive. Just be carefull as there's a lot of potential power there Jeff. Are you going to run it on a test stand?

The engine is a quadra like you though. I think it will be a 40 or 42 cc. Good engines. If you take off the mufler and look in it and see how meny rings there are. I can tell you more. but it looks as if you got a good deal there.

Awesome, guys. The prop is in the box with the huge spinner and all of the nuts and bolts to put it together. It is a 24 X 10 4 bladed prop. Each prop gets bolted onto a hub. It is going to be a balancing nightmare. A guy at our club said that it is worth 100 - 200 bucks. I wasn't planning on running it on a test stand I would have to construct something to run the byro drive too or have to take the whole thing apart. I do have the cut away directions for that in the box but no operating instructions. Can you hook up a kill switch to this motor? In the basic instructions, It says to hook up the sparkplug and let her rip! How do you shut it off? I have been bitten by a spark plug boot in the past and it doesn't feel too good. Years ago, in our agriculture class we were taking a small engines class, and our ag teacher was explaining how the magneto worked on a lawn mower motor and he got shocked bigtime in front of the whole class!!!!!!! Very funny!!!!!!! He was dancing all around and I thought he was going to pee is pants!!!!!!![sm=cry_smile.gif]
I am self employed and I took about 15 minutes off to experiment with paint and chrome monocoat to cover the thing and that was a sucess. Where do you guys think that I should put this building thread????

There should be a terminal sticking up on the top of the coil. If you were to short that terminal to the side of the motor, it would shut the motor off. Put a switch in between and mount it to the sde of the fuse and your good to go. You won't get a jolt out of that terminal as it's low voltage. Use a slide switch like your reciever switch. The toggle switches can't take a joke as far as vibration goes. When you turn the motor backwards, can you feel a spring trying to turn it forward?? Most Quadras had a starter spring in the back of the motor where you turn the motor backwards for half a turn and let it go. I don't know it the Byrodrive had that. Made starting a lot easier on the arm.

Our club president has an extra 300s with a quadra 75 in it and it has that feature. I don't think mine does with the Byro drive. can you hook that switch up to a servo for safety reasons? I am just getting into gasser motors and know very little about them. I do know that you should have a PCM reciever that has the capability to put the engine to idle or shut it off in case of an emergency, right? I have a futaba 7cap with that capability. Also I just purchased a Dave Patrick extra 330L with a 54cc taurus and a futaba 9cap and still haven't flown it. The guy that I bought if from flew it for me and it is a TRUE performer. Here is a picture of it.[img][/img]

If you can continuously turn the motor over backwards, then it doesn't have the spring. You can hook the switch up to a servo but most guys just put the idle trim down to shut the motor off. Not a bad idea to have both.

Ok, Great. I can just simply hook it up like I do my glow engines. I am probably making this more complicated than it seems huh? Wow, 15 years ago before computers, it would have taken days to get all of this info - Thanks! I will go out to the shop a bit later and see if it has the spring - hopefully it does.

I pretty well fly electrics now but I always take the the old Q 42 powered 18 lb. Corby Starlet AKA Ground Pounder out. Gas can and a pump is all you need. No oil to wipe off at the end of the day either. Been flying it for 15 yrs. After flying it that long, it's like an extension of your right hand.

Yeah, last year I really wanted to get into gas because of that mess. I also like the larger sized planes because my eyes aren't what they used to be. and they sound cool too.

Gord, I tor into the two boxes of the p-51 I got an found two mufflers and the directions for the Quadra engine. It is a Q35. I also heard that if you replace the coil, you could gain 300-500rpms, is that true? What coil replaces it? And which muffler should I use? The straight pipe (designed for this plane) or the box type (came with the engine) which has more power and which is quieter? Thanks in advance.

Don't know of a coil that will raise the RPM. Depending on the age of the motor it may have points in it. If you look behind the coil and see a white, round, plastic fitting behind it with a wire coming out and going to the coil, it would have points in it and would need periodic maintainance, clean, adjust but they start better at low cranking RPM. If you don't see anything, it has breakerless, electronic ign. Top RPM is the same on both. Electronic ign. takes a more rigorous crank to start it. Don't know about the muffler that came with it as I'm not familiar although I would use it as it's probably meant to fit the fuselage with the outlet in the right place. By the way, when you get around to starting it, the Quadras like to start juicy wet.
Hope this helps and have fun Jeff. Looks like a good project.
