HOW IS THE NEW RCU SEARCH FUNCTION WORKING FOR YOU????

Marc
Thanks for your efforts to explain what some of us thought were loss of features (including me). A little time reading the manual (RTM and its more popular RTFM brother
) would have educated me on how to search headers. I do think the new search capabilities are better than before, however, the presentation of the soultion is what's going to challenge most - in my opinion.
Similar to what Gutaaaooo suggested earlier, the old style of search presented you with all the options up front, sort of "spoon-fed" you what it needed to work. This was nice for the casual user because they could use with little knowledge of "how" to use the option to begin with. The new search feature is more of an "expert" search mode where you have to understand switches, command line paramaters, etc. in order to condition the search. You might want to consider a search FAQ and add it to the search help or make it a sticky as I believe the same questions are going to be asked over and over...
As for stemming - put me down for exact matches and allow wildcards.

Here is my take on it:
New format: Linux/command prompt user will like.
Old Format: Windows user will like.
Mark, I take it you you use redhat, ubumtu, or somelike that?
Your "this works MUCH better" comments fell just like the ones linux users say about windows...how ever most user still prefer windows, and linux guys just can't accept that someone would prefer a "less efficient" system....thing is, in the end, you gotta let them pic...And windows is still the most popular pic.
Just my 2cents
By the way, I hate the new search too, and I do use linux from time to time....when my professor makes me!

No. We use windows.
Also I must assume everyone here hates google too? This interface is just like google and searches like google. So am I correct for those that hate this also cannot stand google search either? If the answer is no then explain why

I guess we all use search functions a bit differently, but I like being able to narrow the search after I hit the "search" button rather than before. Just seems more efficient to me.

I hadnt used the old RCU search engine in over a year.
I always just go to google and use for example:
Saito FA-50 site:www.rcuniverse.com
Works good for me.
I will continue to use the new search engine and see how it goes. So far so good.

If its not broke why try to fix it. I would rather be workig on my airplanes than trying to figure out a new process on the computer.

If its not broke why try to fix it?
They said that when Henry Ford made the automobile when the horse and buggy was doing the job just fine. Why have cars when a horse & buggy will get you there? Travelers did it for hundreds of years without any problems.
The Sony Walkman played music just fine. I can only wonder why Apple went and tried to fix that?
We were able to read newspapers for 100 plus years just fine. Magazines too. Now why did they go on breaking that with this internet thing?
Kodak and the camera companies had a perfectly good working system with cameras, film, developing photos with chemicals. Why did these companies have to come along and make these new digital cameras when the old ones weren't broken and worked just fine?
And finally...candles worked so well for hundreds and thousands of years and then Edison had to come up with this stupid lightbulb. Why did he have to fix it when the candles worked so fine for years and they were not broken?
I think you get the point. I come from a different school...if it ain't broke...break it and move forward just as all these people did. We will leave some behind in our path but that has always been the way with technology, innovation, invention and progress.

Well put RCAdmin!
I got to admit there is one new feature on RCU that is absolutely awesome and thats the "Search this thread" button at the top of each thread. Massive amount of time saved with this feature. Specially for large threads. No more clicking a search result with the old system and being plonked somewhere at random in the thread instead of directly to the post with the relevant information.
10/10 on that one guys
One thing I would like to see which would also help the search function itself out, is people naming threads with the relevant info.
"Heeelp. Why is it so?" reveals nothing of the question at hand. For example: "My 2 stroke engine wont idle" will get more people in the know replying than "About ready to bin this engine".
I know the search engine will pick it up as a single post accurately now. But makes things a lot easier to search for if they are under a title that makes sense.
Sorry probably being pedantic. But filing information under accurate headings is the best way to manage information.

Good Show Marc !
I love it.
It's faster and I don't have to wade through umpteen pages and look for the longest red line..
Then read the whole topic to get the wanted information, unless I want to.
Thanks RCU it works for me !!
Cheers

I HATE IT ALSO. It gives you too much to weed thru. I could always find what I personally wanted with just one word.

You still can. The reason it gives you too much to weed through is because it actually finds the results that have the word you want. The other one didn't find all the hits not because they were not relevant but simply because the search was broken. Now the search works correctly and finds all posts or subjects with the word you asked for and you would prefer limited results that are incomplete so you have fewer choices? The solution here is to just look at the first page or change your sort to show by datecreated if you only want most recent ones first.
The number one complaint as I said with the old search was that people hated it. IT was our largest complaint of any on the site. When we changed to the new forum people said go back to this one BUT fix the busted search because it sucked. So I fixed it. If you prefer the old busted one go back and bookmark it and use it at your own peril. the link is in this thread. When it fails to find what you want use this one which will find it.

Thanks for the explaination. I'll get used to it. Maybe I'm just slow at accepting change.

bookmark it. link is in this thread somewhere. when it fails as I tell others try this one. this one will not fail unless the word does not exist. also search within thread and search within forum now work and get results while you will find the old search fails miserably 90% of the time.

No worries...we all do not like change even if it is for the better. It is human nature. Fortunately we do adapt quickly although it is natural to resist.

Anyway, I like the way that on the left the search results are broken down by forum, date and the poster's username. I told you earlier I would get used to your new search engine. Now I think I may even like it.

My Feedback: (-1)
Did my first real search for the first time today, at first Iwasn't too impressed but then after my brain started to function it was pretty good, got me right to what I was looking for on the second try without going through all the old threads.
Not bad, Iwill have to give it a few more tries though to get it all figured out.

Fantastic. Glad to hear the feedback guys. I also made some aesthetic and under the hood improvements in the last week as I gathered some usage data from members using it. LMK if any problems.
Also if you are in a forum or a thread you can search within those forums/threads right from there now with no need to do anything but type in your search term or phrase.

I am not as computer literate as some but never failed to find any thingI wished to find with the old search function, but with the new function I have as yet to find ANYTHING when I tried. The new one is faster but what good is fast if I can't find what I need? At least give us the option of using the old or the new. And believe it or not I seldom Google.Thanks.

I'm with silver flyer. I critiqued before and said that I would learn the new one. Sorry. It just isn't able to satisfy my needs as was the old one.
I could put in "sebo" and find all the threads that I have had dealings with. Can't do that now.
Please keep both in effect.
Cordially, Ron
I just tried SEBO and it worked!!
Sorry.

The old search has not been removed. there is a link to it at the top of the new search. if you prefer that you can use it as I said in this thread. when it fails try the new one though which will find what you are looking for

Marc, it is me again(the one that started this thread). Again, I'll let you know that the more I use the new search the more I like it.
