Hyper 7 Suspension - Problem?

Hi there everyone this forum is getting to be very useful since me getting my Hyper 7 sport, which brings to my question. Has anyone else noticed that the stock suspension on these is not very good (at least not on mine). It seems that the shocks are not firm enough as the car just sinks nearly right to the floor when its sitting on the ground. What should I change to get it to stay up? If you push the car down it hardly comes back up and because of this its clearance is rubbish - I know someone with a lighting pro 2 and it is much more responsive than mine. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Try 30 weight shock oil in the front ,40 weight in the rear , then play with preload and shock mounts until you get the proper ride in...aka... drop the car on the bench, when the suspension arms sit level...that is proper ride in.

OK when these buggies come from the factory they are not set up at all, so the first thing you should be doing is striping the whole thing down and lubing up the diffs and shocks. Also for the sport it is a good idea to get yourself some chassis brace as the chassis is thinner and not hardened like the higher spec kits and this combined with a bit of air will fold the ride in no time.

i found that when i got mine the shocks had not been filled properley and were about 5mm from the top. i re-renwed all shock oil and then used spacers to adjust ride height
mine was a pbs though so have slightley different shocks, but the principles are the same.

] I'd replace that I already have 25wt (too thin) and I am getting 50wt (too thick with stock pistons) and some syringes so I can mix some different wt's, try out harder oils and then if it's still damping badly then I will try drilling pistons this means the point at which the damping increases because of oil pressures inside the shock increases later, therefore it is better over small bumps and does not sacrifice damping for those big jumps you can't help but nail the throttle over
This effect is called the 'pack' of the pistons, drilling pistons decreases it. How do I know this? A very knowledgable cartoon character gave me a guide on another forum

I run the stock shocks on my Hyper 7, but I have changed out the oil to 60 wt, with the heavy (white) springs all the way around, and 9 mm of preload in the rear. this makes a much firmer ride, but the white springs give enough rebound to keep the suspension very active. without using the ride height adjustment screws in the front, my suspension arms ride level. this setup doesnt get much height off jumps, but it keeps you low to the track where you can put power to the ground

On my PBS Im running the Kyosho Light blue springs- with 50 wt in front and 45 in rear, with 8 spacers in the back (2x4's) and 10 (2x5's) in the rear, forgot which holes on the tower but I think they are Middle top holes on the cnc shock tower and all the way out on the arms.

Ok so far so good.....my mate got some new shocks for his lightning pro 2 so I took the oil out of his old ones and its made a BIG difference, but im still going to get some new wt oils still unsure which wts though - also what do you lot mean about preload??? where and how is this adjusted?

Preload is the little clips that you put on the suspension. I am surprised you managed to use old oil did you fill them to the top? I have been recommended by a very reputable source 35wt in the rear and 50wt in the front with 1.5mm drilled pistons for a bumby dusty low grip track and it's bumpy as well, oh and don't forget the bumps

Yeah I filled them to the top....but from what you have said I will buy some of that wt oil ASAP. Also by drilling the 1.5m holes you mean in those little white round things that go inside at the top of the suspension right? as these already have holes but they are pretty small - would would happen if the holes were kept as they were? im guessing that it would mean a much firmer ride?

Basically drilling pistons decreases the pack, the pack is the amount of force needed to increase the damping due to pressures in the oil, by increasing pack this happens at higher shock speeds so the small bumps are soaked up as well as the big ones because you also use thicker oil. It's hard to grasp I know but imagine the piston as two chambers with a pressure regualator in between them it only lets through a certain amount so when the shock piston travels slowly the pressure only increases at the top a little bit but when it goes faster the pressure increases much more stopping the car bottoming out as easily but if you do this with the same wt oil it just goes straight through those huge holes so you use stronger oil if you did it in reverse i.e small holes thick oil then you are going to have a really firm ride and it's going to bounce around one hell of a lot and not get much grip. I have a guide that shows all of the tuning factors and explains them really simply with examples of what kind of track it is good for if you PM me your mail I can send it, if you want it[8D]
