I'm trying to find upgrades for the conical and bevel gears in the MBX5 diffs. I would be also interested in Torsen diffs if anybody knows where to get them at reasonable prices without having to take out a second mortgage on my home to buy 'em.
If you know any info I'd appreciate it!
Thanks, Doug

fioroni makes 'em too. about $150 a pop. im thinking of going that route just so i dont have to replace the oil after every 5 minute run... unless any of you know of a fix for the stock diff's???

The X5 stock diffs are great when setup correctly. WHy are you wanting to get new diffs? Try playing around with different diff oil for each diff. I use 5000/7000/2000 and it seems to be pretty popular, makes the car drive alot better.

i found 4 seconds a lap at Slough in the UK by changing to a NuovaFaor front Torsen
i had to use much thicker slicone in the centre to stop the rear from spinning out when i fitted the Torsen and now its much better at pulling out of turns on the infield

e420x,
Maybe it's just me but looking at the conical gears the don't look like they will stand up to a lot of abuse. If I could find some that are ground and tempered I would go that route first. Then go to Torsens later. I've heard good and bad about Torsens, but have never ran them myself.
Tell me if I'm wrong about the conical gears. I'd like to know because I've never owned an X5 before.
Thanks, Doug

Yes the conical gears are teh last thing I would worry about. What I have foudn to be the only problem is the o-rings. You need to change out the main S05 o-rings to some aftermarket ones. You can find them @ A-main hobbies or on ebay. I just put a set in and will try, but hear that this will fix the leaky diff issue. I have almsot 2 gallons thru my car and the diffs have been apart a few times, gears look fine..

Alright, I guess I was wrong then. I just looked on the parts list and I've been calling it the wrong name. The conical gears are some of the best I've seen. The parts list calls the ones I'm concerned about "diff gears". 4 silver gears in each diff (I normally call them planetary gears) Have you heard of any problems out of these? They're the ones I was talking about that look like they aren't tempered.
Where do you guys find replacement parts like a-arms and common stuff like that? I checked Tower and Horizon, but didn't see any. I haven't done any real digging into it, just wondering. I like to have spares of some parts just in case.
Another question. I've heard there are some problems with diffs leaking a little. Is this true? If so what's the best fix for it. I heard the Pro-spec changed the design and got rid of this problem.
If the diffs are fine that's good.
I plan to go with a Fioroni Chassis and the Kingheadz upgrade kit.
What do you think of these parts? Is there anything else you would change or recommend?

The gears are of a good quality, you will be fine. have not heard of anyone realling stripping them. As for the leaky diffs, yes they leak, like I said in my post above..order ones from a main hobbies or ebay. I order my parts mainly from ace-hobbies. Only upgrades I feel is necessary are the chassis stiffeners and titanium turnbuckles, the steering ackerman some people say to upgrade since they break and the aftermarket have a 3mm offset to help with bumpsteer. My car does not have much bumpsteer and I have not broken my ackerman yet, but do plan to get that upgrade.

Oldchopdoc, you can order from www.ace-hobbies.com or you can try www.nitrohouse.com. I prefer Nitro House because they have always been extremely helpful on the phone and their prices (if you call) are cheaper than advertised on their site.
I haven't had much luck with www.ace-hobbies.com. I spoke to Keith there last time and the guy said that they sell nothing but OFNAs there. Now, all of the sudden, they got a whole bunch of brands they are selling.

i have a fioroni chassis on my mbx4 xr - nice chassis but it shows scratches much more for some reason.
i will eventually get one for my mbx5...
i love the king headz pars for the mbx5 - the only thing i dont have for it is the rear shock tower and the longer motor mounts.
the chassis stiffners are sweet!!
