I'm trying to decide between these two buggies. This will be my 13 year old son's first 1/8 buggy. I'm tired of fighting him over my Mayhem. I used to own a Hyper 7 and loved the way it drove. However, the electric start on the MBX would make it easier on him. What do you guys think? This car will be driven at the track only! Thanks...

while these kits are sold under the brand of OFNA, they are actually made by different companies. the hyper7 is by HoBao, and the Ultra is by Hong Nor. from what i have seen, there is a substantial difference in quality between the two brands. HoBao is more of the real deal than HongNor.

I have an ultra mbx comp I like the buggy but if I had it to do over with I would have bought a mayhem because the force .26 is junk in my opinion but my friends .26 runs great. The reason I say I would have gotten a mayhem if I had it to do over with is because after replacing the junk engine and buying a starter box I have more in it than if I would have bought a mayhem if you look you can find the mayhem rtr for around $450 to $500 and I have more than that in my mbx. Just to let you know if you buy the mbx make sure you take the engine off and loctite the screws that hold the starter on the engine otherwise they will have fallen out before the motor gets broken in (i know from experience) also just make sure you loctite all screws going into metal. Just my opinion get him a mayhem better engine and controller you dont have to do anything to it.

Of the two I would pick the Hyper 7 pbs. At your son's age, He won't outgrow the hyper as quickly as the mbx comp. I gather he already has some driving experience and might be passed the entry level stage that the mbx comp is considered for, in my opinion. As his driving skills improve, you can hop up the hyper to suit. You can do the same with the mbx comp, but it will never be the buggy the hyper 7 pbs is. It really just handles better and is more durable. It's proven itself to be a racing contender and a good basher as well.
