Pull starts are notorious for giving problems, whether its broken strings or one way bearings. You either live with it or get a starter box. I have some pull start engines and generaly I get reasonable life out of them, but ocassionally I have to replace parts. The trick is to use it as little as possible. Get the engine to start in 2-3 tugs and don't be pulling on it for 5 mins at a time.

Majority of pullstarts break from being over extended which is common and easy to do. I usually just convert them over to shaft start system once I break the pull starter.

It all has to do with if you know what you are doing! On my buggy I use a starter box but on my HPI MT I had over 8 gallons on it before I had a problem with my pull starter and that was when the one way bearing when bad. On my Savage I have around 8 gallons or more on it and had a problem with it twice, which was my fault both times from trying to start a flooded engine. Now I did have to fix the one on my TZ 3 times while breaking it in. The biggest thing with pull starters is not to pull the cord out to far and do not try to start a flooded engine before clearing it.

got it on wednesday and it broke today, wasnt pulled too hard, wasnt pulled out too far. sucks :/

im just wondering, with a pull cord to help start it u cover the exhaust and pull it a few times to get fuel into it, with a starter box do u cover the exhaust and just use the starter box a few times or?

you need to buy the correct backplate for the engine being used, the one I showed you was an example and is for the supertiger g-27cx engine

Go to the Savage forum and see how that type of system holds up and problems people have! I never had one as I have no problems with pull starters or a starter box. Might be just the thing for you and good luck.

Zonda, I know you said you are considering a starter box.....
Don't even think about it, just go get one. I've rebuilt pullstarts, replaced oneway bearings and have had two different types of shaft starter systems. I probably spent over $100 just on non-starter box options. I got an Ofna ChromeTop starterbox off Ebay for $55 and it was the best $55 I've spent in this hobby. I wish I had one from the beginning.

Hi there im thinking of getting a hyper 7 but i really am thinking of maybe getting a starter box too because pull cords are such a hasle. What would i have to change on the buggy so that it would work with a starter box? Is it easy to do and what would i have to change on it to use the stick starter thing sorry for my lack of knowledge thnaks alot. How much would it roughly cost in pounds thanks

how do you get the motor to start in 2-3 pulls? I am just in the 8th or so tank on my kyosho inferno .28 and it stills takes about 20 or 30 pulls. I have found that if I prime the engine by covering the exaust port it will help, but it still takes 10 or so pulls in this manner before the engine becomes primed. Will it all get easier when it is completely broken in?
