Thanks again JB - I started breaking in the D21B today - what a great motor... so far. I temp cycled it 7 or 8 times at idle - only got up to about 115 degrees. I then ran it at maybe 50% for a tank and started to lean it to get up to 180 degrees. Ran great. I will temp cycle it a couple more times tomorrow and run a slow tank again before I put it on the track. I am impressed so far with the quality and the run-in.

is that Fahrenheit? if it is, then you need to be getting it up around 220-240 for break-in

How many tanks should I take it easy? I was planning on bringing the temps up to the 180-210 range and keeping it at 80% throttle or less for the next few tanks. Can't wait to cut this baby loose!

you should take it easy for at least a gallon. the engine will be broke in when you can turn the engine over with no affert with the plug out.

I know its a long time but your engine will last longer, and I'm in the middle of breaking in my STS 30, so I know its a long time.

the engine will start to wake up somewhere in its 2nd gallon. It can take over a gallon to break it in, but its almost guaranteed to need a gallon.

break in is the worst part for an STS... Takes forever, but at least the wait is worth it.

well I had to beg, Kick, steal, scream, cock my mouth 2.37 degrees to the right and ever so slightly up 3.5 mm (rob parts off other nitro's im not usin at the moment)...

but I finally got the Jammin put together.... 2 of the screws on the top cf deck were stripped so this made mouting the servo's a royal pain... but here are the picks....

I am going to ren fest tomorrow but after I get back we are poppin the cork and breakin in the MK II red head

sputnikxxx - That red head sure looks great on that Jammin! Really nice work on the buggy! I have the clutch on my reddy, but it is not on the xray yet. I am going to break-in the D21B first on the Hyper7.

You need to take the Picco sticker off since you are running a STS! LOL

brutus... you may be right about that.... lol... whoops... I know on my t maxx I had it wouldn't mount on unless you had it turned the right way this one mounts either way... does it matter which way the head is facing?....

I hear yah 46u lol... That mk II was a $itch to start MAJOR COMPRESSION... but im sure im not tellin you anything you don't know already... I had to get a hair dryer to warm up the motor.... then my start box was going dead on my and I didn't feel like waiting for my battery to charge.... then after that my glow plug was dyin on me...

but I got all that charged up and was able to finally get it runnin...... I just got finished with the 5th 2 miniute tank run.... and am bout ready to finish breakin it in..

you'll want to rotate your head 90 degrees.

Default RE: sts questions

I have a question about the mk II I got through all the 6 to 8 idle tanks per instructions... I then thought I would drive it around a little real lightly.. but when I tried and would give it throttle.... it acted like it would want to bog.... I know the settings are usually rich from the getgo for breakin procedure but ive never had a motor so rich that had so little power that it would not even hardly move?.... I tried leaning it out a bit on the low speed needle as it was shooting thick smoke just at idle...

Is this should like the problem or does this seem like a clutch problem?... I did get it to open up once and start to take off but then I was out of fuel.... and im done workin on it today so I will figure it out tomorrow

You might have to lean it out just enough where it will pull but keep it as rich as possible and you are not trying to go fast yet just where you can drive it.

All so a good heat gun does much better then a hair drier and I agree with the others about turning the head 90 degrees for better cooling.

try getting it rolling first, by pushing it and it should move. on my crt I'm breaking in it won't move till I get it up to 1/4 throttle, so I push mine to get it off a complete stop.

ok.... I will lean it out on the low speed just a hair, untill I can get enough power to get it to go without having to give it full throttle....

and I turned the cooling head back around.....

Loosen the screw that located next to the carb, pull carb out, turn carb around, insert carb, tighten screw

Default RE: sts questions

I just broke in my 21E yesterday. One thing about it was the break in setting are super rich. When I first started it I would let it idle and it would go through an entire tank of fuel in about 3 minutes just from idling! Also during idling my engine was COLD. I would put my hand on the cooling head and it was barely warm after a whole tank of running. IMO I would turn the HSN in about 1 turn before even starting it. After letting it idle for about 3 tanks I decided it was time to drive it around lightly to finish the break in. So I started it and gave it throttle and it didnt move. It was so rich that the engine couldnt build up enough RPMs to move. All I got was a thick cloud of smoke when I gave it throttle. I put the HSN in about 1.5 turns just so the buggy would drive around. After driving it around for a few minutes my temperatures were where they should've been so it was all good. I think maybe I should of ran the heat cycle method on this engine purely cause the temps weren't where they should have been when idling. Cause when I started to drive it around a bit then the temps went up.

Overall I think the STS 21E is a very good engine. I never had a problem starting it and it ran smooth. I paid $120 for it and it was well worth it.

I have yet broken in any BRAND engine that the factory settings where not way rich not only STS! Yes STS richer then most others but better to start out to rich then to lean!!!!! All had to be leaned out at least a little just to keep them running. To properly break in any engine you should wrap the head in aluminum foil and preheat with a heat gun. The STS D21E does not have near the pinch most other STS have but still a good idea to preheat.

Like most engines other then OS take a standard long plug. OS plugs are to short for STS and most other engines. On break in do to running rich good idea to run a hot plug that will all so help with getting temperatures up.
