RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Gday,

i've been into RC buggies for years, raced nitro stadium trucks for a while before the grumpy old folks complained about the noise & got them banned at my local track. now i just race 1/10th EP buggies at the local track & have to go for a bit of a drive to run my nitros. was looking at getting the prospec with the OS vspec off tower when it arrives. i've read through this thread & seen there was problems with orings & some people had problems with the brake setup. are there any ather major things i should look out for or parts i should order when i place my order for the kit? i was going to go with the OS exhaust setup, but if there is something better i'd be glad to hear about it.

Cheers
Dicko.

here is the place to get most of what you need http://www.carolinasrc.com/webstore/...?idCategory=16
they have the upgraded o-rings and the craddock brakes. id get the CV boots to keep dust out of the drives. and the k-factory hinge pins= no e-clips is nice. and on the brake linkage just put a spring out of a ink pen to keep tension on them w/ a little washer at the end of it before the spring. other than that i think you are wasting a lot of money for a pro kit but thats just me. who am i to talk ? i got the reg X5 w/ every kings upgrade they make so i guess im in the same ball park....lol

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

i just sold off a heap of stuff & have some money to burn, thought i'd get the pro kit & save money on buying a heap of upgrades. i'm cutting my list of models down & but increasuing the variety to choose from.

cheers for the tips.

they're out of stock on the hingepins, D'oh.

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

remember 1 thing the alumnium on the pro kit is not a strong or light as the Kings heads stuff. the grain of the towers on the pro run left to right and make it easier to bend. the gas tank is really the only other diff. i got a lid for 8 bucks and it works great. the kings kit is 200bucks. i got the reg kit off ebay for $405 so im still way under the price of a pro and i got a better buggy. just a idea and the P5 is a better mill IMHO...

dicko 06-15-2005 08:40 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

i looked between the 3 kits & value for money the pro is a good deal, i will end up replacing a lot of stuff anyway as i always do, none of my factory pro kits end up being stock. there's a bit of time until it comes in stock, so i may change my mind before i hit the buy now button.

is the carolina shop the best place to get parts? i use tower a lot, it's easier to get stuff from there than top get our local hobby shops here in australia to get stuff.

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Get the Prospec and get the one piece mount, tank,alum. hubs, better hinge pins, titanium rods, alum ackermann, alum tension braces, alum towers set up tools and whatever things you can get. Had a regular MBX% and now a Prospec, they drive differently...both good, but Prospec was stiffer. Get the aftermarket parts if you like too, more than one way to get a great handling buggy. Just keep it as a MBX-5 and you will like it. Ran mine today to try out a new motor, and it ran perfectly. Jumps predictably,turns O.K. great quality parts and it is quick and nimble.

How many of you Balance your tires, and if you do, do you notice a big difference? Also what do you use? I have the Top FLight Balancer, but I can't find lead tape anywhere to balance...

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

really its not used in off road ? but onroad 8th scales do and they also use alumnium wheels. a buddy of mine has a hyper w/ a 2 speed and it was clocked at 83mph. now thats when you need balance. he got his weights at a tire shop they sold him a crap load for cheap

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Well that makes sense! If I think about, it's not like off-road racing is a smooth ride:D

So check this out, I'm all happy with my Prospec looking all pretty ready to take some pictures, so I turn on the RX switch, then the TX and when I hit the throttle I hear a little electric motor spinning freely[:o] Damn Futaba servo gear is shot!

So here are my temporary choices until I get new gears for the servo, which one should I get

MPI Steel Gear Servo with 180oz of torque
Hitec with 86oz Torque
JR Steel Gear with 85oz Torque

I'm limited with funds so I have to settle with these cheepies until I get my Futaba servo repaired if I want to race Tomorrow

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

What's the speed of these servos?

zzman 06-16-2005 03:04 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

id go w/ the JR . i had my futaba go out as well this wk. its the 9451 digi. it just wouldnt work smooth it was like the frist 1/2 throttle was fast then the rest was fine . so you would try to ease into the throttle and it would be like full throttle. i sent it in the rep said it is no prob they will fix it for free. i will only buy airtronics from now on. i got 2 360's in right now. .07sec at 125oz

mbx5prospec 06-16-2005 03:06 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

there not that fast I think the fastest is .15-16, It's just for the throttle though, So I'm not looking for extreme speed. I'm just hoping that one of these brands use some quality into there servos, I'm leaning towards JR and Hitec, never heard of MPI...

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Yeah, I'm kinda upset with the my servo, and they don't offer replacement gears for them, would this be a warranty issue I wonder?

zzman 06-16-2005 03:37 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

they have 1 yr. mine was hardly used. go to their web and print off a work order and send it in w/ the servo. write a letter explaining whats wrong ,email, return addy,reciept...

mbx5prospec 06-16-2005 03:51 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Just spoke to them, and they said it sounds like a Warranty Issue, They where very nice, I will be sending it tomorrow, and they indicated a 1-2 week turn around, lets see how true that will be. My friend sent in his 3PK and he had to wait almost 2 months!

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

i use the hitec high speed karbonite digital servos in my nitro stadium truck & my racing buggies & so far no problems & they've taken an absolute beating. i have had problems with the hitec HS 625MG though. i'm not a fan of futaba, i think they are overpriced for what you get. JR is a bit pricey for what you get too, but i would pick jr over futaba.

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

I know these aren't what you were looking for but I thought I would mention that the JR 8800 T/S servos are amazing. I was a die-hard 94358/7 fan until I tried these. I bought them because I wanted to try out a digital servo and I'm glad I did. The stats don't look as good as the 94358/7 but they are better.......it's difficult to describe. You just have to try them out. They're also a litte overpriced but oh well.

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

I've seen others write about the lack of strength in the shock shafts on a Prospec. I have yet to snap one so I am still waiting on the dreaded day when one breaks on the final lap in the A main. Are there any solutions for this problem yet? Is it a problem? Do they bend or just snap? Is it typically the fronts or the rears? Is it usually from a bad landing or a crash? You guys have made me so nervious that I ordered two sets of shafts front and rear just to have in the bag. I've never broken a shock shaft on any of my buggies.........what's the deal with the MBX-5? Does anyone make titanium shafts or higher grade aluminum? I don't crash when I'm in a race but I've taken a few nasty hits on the track during practice and I've never broken anything.....no arms, shafts, NOTHING. Other than originally assembling the kit, I've never had to work on the buggy. I'm going to rebuild everything next week.

mbx5prospec 06-16-2005 07:54 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

They usually break on right before the last thread on the shaft, the last one was the front right that broke on a hard, hard landing, last time was a full speed rear end hit. Just have to realize tha something has to break, the car is a tank and can take alot of abuse. But it's good to have some extra parts anyway... I'm also a newbie, so I don't think that the pro's will have this problem

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Are any of you guys using aftermarket pillowballs? I just ordered the Chad Bradley pilliowballs but I had a tough choice between them and those composite Lottaballs. I'm curious to see if I'll be able to notice any difference. There is a pretty nice wieght reduction off the front end but I think it'll be difficult to gauge it's effectiveness on the track. It might make a huge difference though......do any of you have experience with them?

$60 seems a bit high but at least I finally have everything you can buy for an MBX-5. Even those stupid carbon fiber wheel pins that cost me $10.

mbx5prospec 06-16-2005 10:42 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Carbon Fiber Pins are hard to go in and hard to come out, The split easily with and force. I have the lottaballs, the composite material is PLASTIC! They have to maintained all the time, I have to do them once a week, there lubricated with graphite powder and if you get the wet, the stick! But they are lighter and I'm still using them! But even with the originals, when you get dirt in them you have to rebuild.

JustinWZP 06-16-2005 10:55 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Yeah, I heard that those Lottaballs take some serious mainenance. That was the only downside. I haven't had any problems with the carbon pins. Did you have troubles or were you reading about it?

Are [link=http://www.carolinasrc.com/webstore/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=132]THESE[/link] different from what comes in the Prospec kit?

mbx5prospec 06-16-2005 11:06 PM

RE: :: Official MBX5/Prospec Thread !!

Yes, these are the new updated ones from mugen, also updated recently was the front lower arms. But good luck in getting them!
