Fail safe

Can some give me info about how a failsafe works.
I had experience with my big swamp buggy running away {almost]
It started getting intermitent on the controls, so I turned it toward the dock I was standing
on. While coming straight at me on return, I turned the throttle down to idle It stayed almost
wide open I jumped back waiting for the train wreck I knew was comimg lucky the dock was only about 6 in
above water. The boat hit the dock and went airborn, went 4 ft. high and about 20 ft., clearing the dock and
made a beautiful landing went into the grass on the bank where i was able to walk over and shut it down.
Upon examination, the battery wire had parted, I was lucky
I don't know if a failsafe could have prevented this or not, seeing as how the battery connection was broken.
Any way I don't want do that again. Help.
Thanks guys and gals Im surethere are some rewading this.

A failsafe would have done nothing to help that crash since the battery came disconnected.
Here is something we all should have connected to our throttle servos. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXUP98&P=7

Are there any failsafes that will operate on loss of battery too(loss of signal)? If not it should not be that hard to design and it would be a good idea for all r/cer's to use except maybe a tank or a rock crawler. Even though a 1/6 or 1/4 scale tank could do a lot of damage if running rampant. A capacitor or separate battery for the fail safe should work. Dennis

Are you looking for something like this for a gasoline engine?

I don't think those will work. He is looking for something that shut's down an engine in the event of a power loss. I could be wrong but I have one in my toolbox and when power is cut any servo that is connected to it stays at whatever position it's at the time of the power loss.

Yea, he's looking for something that, in the event of a physical disconnection of the battery, the engine will kill. I still think the return spring is the easiest and most economical. If it works for RC cars, why not boats?

Would't a spring tension pulling on a servo all the time be damaging.
In order to pull a servo back under power failure, it would have to be strong.
Just wondering, thanks guys for the help

Excuse my ignorance, but this spring ( http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXUP98&P=7 ) I believe it is used in automotive carburetor, but it is possible that you could show some picture of how to mount this system to be used in case the battery disconnect? I know that if the battery disconnect the servo will be stalled in the last position.

I'll do one better...I made a video. I believe that the spring I used was a Team Losi throttle return..but they all do the same thing.

Congratulations, I admire more and more for your patience and experience
After several people disagree, including me, because I could not see how the spring, you saw the video and posted for everyone.

crispyspa ,
My only question is if I disconnect the battery's servant will return to closed position carburetor? When you made the video, you turned off the battery?

On Monday I will see if I get this spring, therefore, been through a similar situation.
Again thank you
He's the kind of guy who shows what he's made of.

Crispyspa,
Thank you for the vidieo, seeing is believing.
? Would you still use a failsafe in addition,
as it would seem with power and no signal the servo
would not return to shutoff., if power was still on, A
failsafe would shut throttle down
wondering,
Thank you for answering my dumb questions.
Its people like you who save the average guy
a lot off mistakes. Thanks for your experiance

I also use failsafe. I do admit that I don't have throttle returns is all my boats though. [sm=disappointed.gif]
