hi there, ive been lurking around in the boat forum for awhile, and i just thought id start a "boat bashers" thread. sorry, but other than "bashing" i dont know much about boats. well, anyways, i went over to my friends house today and we both ran our reef racers in the pool playing "tag". it was a lot of fun, in fact, he managed to knock off my canopy during one mishap. i had so much fun that im seriously considering buying a 550 size boat to take to the lake. just thought id share my experience.

With one of my cheapest boats being in the $600.00 range, we don't bash! Don't think about doing stuff at boat races that you can get away with racing cars and trucks or you'll find yourself drug off the site and very unwelcome at any other races.
What you do in a pool with your buddy is up to the 2 of you. I happen to have a ZZR and still wouldn't bash that. Accidents do happen when playing or racing but they are just that. Dirty racing is not tolerated.

I actually think thats pretty cool. I wouldnt do it with my boat, but I would with a walmart or Toysrus boat. Tag does sound very fun in the water. Iv played tag with rc cars, we always end up flipped each other

I am not too serioous w/ my boats and started out with a reef racer also. I bash my hammer in a river with current running so fast at times the boat runs double speed one way and half speed the other. I run it full bore out most all the time and one of these days I know I will lose it down stream.

sorry guys.[&o] i just thought there might be someone out there that would agree. i guess not.
oh, and ron, i never meant this to turn into a thread about racing, personally ive never been to a race except for aircraft, and i know how to act there, so why'd you get the idea that id make people mad at races?

If you want to do it in a pool, "Go for it".
Unless there is someone else in the pool!
Hope you build a nice fast boat that you are proud of!
Be nice to your boat and it will give you years of fun.
You might even get it to go faster and have more fun with it.
Ask the right questions and "be told how much it costs"
"PLEASE COME AGAIN"
Regards Brettos.
PS: What's nitro.

hey, i was just on tower and saw a high rpm motor for the vendetta. (1/18 scale buggy) i looked at the dimensions and it would fit inside the reef racer hull and mount, but i was wondering if anyone knows if it would stress the battery and esc a lot? i dont want to make it too hot and ruin my electronics.

I won't go into the boatbashing thing, we get enough of that (unintentionally!) at our race days...
Car motors are usually geared down in the car application, I doubt if such a motor would work on a prop in direct drive.
The propload will not let the motor reach its most efficient rpm level, it will consume huges amountes of current, get hot and eventually burn out.
Going for a smaller prop doesn't work either, as the RR prop already is rather small, an even smaller prop would be less efficient and will probably generate more foam than speed....

Hey Wide Open,
There would have been some documentation that came with your ESC or it might be written on the ESC it self.
What you should look for is the "Amp rating", it might look like ( 40A ) printed on the ESC.
Now you know how many amps your ESC can handle during normal operation.
Next consider your engine choice.
Check out the site where you are buying it from and look at the power requirements of the engine.
Check to see the max amp draw from the engine at stall, is less than or equil to your ESC rating.
So, in short if your engine needs more amp's than your ESC can delliver even if you get fishing line or weed caught in the prop, "POOF" thanks for coming.
I think?
Regards Brettos.
PS: Use a fuse !

ok thanks guys.
and ill say it again, im sorry about the boat bashing. im still making my entry into boating and being a car guy "bashing" pretty much means (at least in my case) just impromptly driving around and having fun. and that also makes me curious. whats the bashing thing that happens on race day? are people just driving around in the middle of the race in your way? cause i would wholeheartedly agree that thats just wrong and flat rude. like i said ive raced aircraft several times and i would get very angry if someone just went out there and started flying in the middle of our race.

rubbin' is racin' ...I think that is what they mean. I don't race either but I do run with my brothers. We built the same little fast catamaran that is a blast to race each other with. ...and since they were cheap and easy to build, we don't mind a little bashing. I suppose that if I were serious about racing I might do otherwise, but since it is my brothers and we race each other for fun, bashing is expected. If one of us falls too far behind we'll cut corners to catch back up so that there is a little close contact...we do the same thing with our trucks on the BMX track and the RC track. I think it also depends on the boat. I know the RR 2 can take a serious beating and not even have a scratch. It's like rubbermaid...it bounces right back. So, don't be sorry about bashing, there are others out there that do it. But, we have a certain boat we do it with. I certianly wouldn't do it with my gas boat. To much time and money put into it to risk it being damaged. My brother had his RR 2 one day at the lake and noticed a pop can floating out in front of us. He decided to hit square on and see if the boat would go under it. It did the opposite...it jumped about a foot out of the water and subbed on the other side. It popped right back up and kept going. We both thought that was pretty cool. So he did it over and over again. Nothing ever happened to the boat.

you got a point there. some boats definatly arent suited for it, but the reef racer is built to run in small spaces so its got to be tough. it is one fun little boat, though, and for only 80 bucks, you cant beat it as a beginners boat![8D]

Tag does sound very fun in the water.
