I am new to Nitro/gas powered r/c's. I just purchased a speed master vh-x5 buggy. I am having a problem getting it to start up. It didn't come with an instruction manual. The glow plug gets pretty hot, and the engine starts to turn over but dies. can anyone please let me know what i need to do? and where i can get a manual for the engine, so I know what to trouble shoot? I purchased this buggy used, but the person I purchased it from said he only used it once.

Thanks

Lee

By the sounds of it, either the needles or the trim (on the controller) are set wrong. first of all, on the throttle control there is a little tab thing next to the throttle stick. Thats the throttle trim, now with that move it up about 0.5cm By doing that it sets the idle higher. Be careful because if you set it too high the car could shoot off when you start it. If that doesnt work then it must be the air/fuel mixture. (here is the needle you have to adjust to change the air/fuel mix - http://www.traxxas.com/support/pub/i...spd_needle.jpg) If it just dies when you rev it then the mixture is too lean. If it burbles and tries to go but dies then its too rich. If the mixture is too lean then turn the needle anti-clockwise and if its too rich turn it clockwise. Only turn it by a couple of clicks each time. Also make sure the carb is set up right, Before you adjust the needle, take off your air filter and look down the hole, there should be a gap between 3-5mm, if there isnt use the trim on the controller to fix it.

Hope ive helped,
Ryan.

Hello All,

Just to let you know Excel Hobby has defrauded me. It has been over a month since I have ordered some speedy tiger parts and they have not been delivered. My phone calls and emails never got response and I have filed a complaint with the BBB.

I lost $40, nothing that is going to bankrupt me, but just to let you all know to stay away from them.

Sorry to hear that, but I have placed 3 orders and got the stuff in good time, and a correct order.

Maybe someone in NJ or wherever they are can stop in on your behalf and inquire about your order?

On EH:

So far I placed 3 orders with them for about $200 each. I paid with paypal with my credit card account. Heres a few notes on my three orders;

After I placed an order, I heard nothing till about 7-10 days later when I got an email (from a Jerry?) with tracking number.

Within a few days I got the package by usps. They charged me $20 for shipping each time but the postage due was about $6 or so. This really pisses me off.

Each time I would recieve a small check and the memo would say "part out of stock". Ok I did buy alot of crap and many parts, but whatever.

Some parts seem to to be genuine smartech and some others another brand (I dont have my stuff nearby to check the name on it). Thats how it seems to me anyways, but all seem to work.

The break clutch thingie (sorry, its late and I dont want to look the name up) doesnt work. This is stated in previous posts in this forum about the difference in one and two speed transmissions. Its not made clear on their website, so I decided to find out the hard way and just lost a few bucks. BTW....USE THE TOWER HOBBIES LINK IN PREVIOUS POSTS IF YOU NEED IT. They never seem to "burn out" like the smart tech does.

Ok, sorry for the long post. I just wanted to put out there my business deals with them. We have pretty much no choice in Smartech suppliers in the US, but I have had good luck with EH (minus my statements). Im in no way calling MSCOOLING a liar, but maybe something bad did happen? What parts did you order? How did you pay? Are you sure they have your right addy?

Ryan,

Thanks for the advise, it worked. once i got it to start, once I let go of the controler trigger it would stop running. I started fixing the gas gage/trim, it would stay on only if I gave it some gas. while I was adjusting it, the engine started to rev-up I couldn't get it to stop. So, turned off the battery part to the buggy, and I pulled out the gas contector-hose attached to the engine, and it finally stopped. Now, I can't seem to get the controller/trigger (or metal arm that controls the gas/brake) to work or move when the engine is off. I think I blew the clutch out. While I was doing all this, the buggy wasn't moving. Do you have any suggestions or ideas as to what i should do next, or was it something I did? also which is the best % for the nitro mix, is it 20 or 33 for these kind of buggies? Since I don't have a manual/instructions, I am pretty stumped (since I am new at this.) I purchased this buggy used. I am thinking that the person who sold it to me knew it had some problems.

Thanks for your help,

Lee

do you know where I could get a manal/instructions for this model?

far back (about page 20 I think) somebody posted the manual, as for the way you stoped the buggy is not good. To cut out the engine, either block off the airfilter or the exhaust and it should cut out in about 2seconds. As for the electrics you could of ran out of battery power, if it started revving on its own (the servo moving on its own) then it means you had either no or little battery power. Fuel, I always use 20% Its the strogest stuff the model shop has :P but I would run it on 33% Your engine wont last as long as if you used 20% but you would have better performance with 33% Clutch, we'll deal with that when you have the engine running properly =)

I am planning on buying my first nitro buggy soon. I was wondering if the Smartech 2 speed Winner Sport is a good choice. If it isn't what offroad buggy do you recommend for around 200 bucks.

that's what I have, and I think it is a great value for the money. You will eventually have to replace some parts, but that is expected for these types of toys. If you don't go crazy and beat the heck out of it, it is a fun and reliable machine. Check out my videos at:

Hmmmmm that is quite disturbing. I've never had any problems with them. I've ordered from them 4 times now. and you are right. good luck calling or e-mailing. but I just order off their website and in a day or two i get an e-mail with confirmation and a few days later the parts are at my door. They were always good with prices and shipping often a 3 - 4 dollar markup from the actual price on the stamp. I'm currently waiting on a set on rear suspension pins which should be in any day now. even tho I've repaired my car using dog bone shafts. but I will be more weary in the future.

Hey Doc Physics, your buggy is faster than any Smartech I have seen... Did you replace the carb or engine? Gimme the skinny!

Mine does not hit as hard off the line as that, by a long shot.

if it doesnt then your engine is probably set up wrong. If it bogs out when you set off quickly, it means your running it too rich, adjust the needle only slightly

Trinogt,

Nope everything in my buggy is 100% stock, except the clutch shoes. I only run direct fit Kyosho IF-204 alloy clutch shoes. Makes it pretty snappy off the line. I use 20% nitro, and I just tuned the engine real nice. Shows what these Smartechs can do!

Ok, found the manual, and made sure the batteries were good. Now, I can't get the trigger to work.. (the part that makes it break or gives it gas.) Have any suggestions what it might be? I have though it might be the servo, clutch or the part that makes the servo move? should i just take it all apart, if so, how can I tell what is wrong with it? is there a diagram available that tells me what every part is, so i know what to order?

Thanks for your help,

Lee

Doc Physics, that is cool news! What was this Kyosho clutch designed to fit on? Where can I find it? Is it the same as the MP7.5 I see associated with the IF-204 when I google the shoes?

Looking in the US for this, maybe my hobby shop carries this? Is it a specific clutch for all .15 engines, or do you order for another type of car?
