I am not 100% sure but I dont think this car comes RTR. It does require assembly but all that is required is the radio equipment and support equipment. It is a fun car to build though, and with the 12r ss engine its pretty dang fast too. You can get the kit for about 270 on ebay, not sure form tower. Check it out on their web site, HPI Racing.

the HPI RS4-3 SS comes in kit form only. I had just built one about a month ago. great car. if you want a RTR, you will have to go with the regular HPI RS4-3. which has NO 2-speed or aluminum header. the 2-speed alone is around $45 from www.rcboyz.com cheapest place i have seen it.

The RS4 3 does come RTR. But not SS RTR. It is around $300. I have not had to replace anything on it yet, except for the exhaust gasket that was in stock at my LHS. The RS4 model has been around for a while with the 3 being the third generation of it. It has been quite reliable to this point and I would buy it again if I had to. I really like it.

the ss is very easy to build . thr rtr rs4 has a weak engine , no 2 speed tranny. just these 2 upgrades would cost you about 179. it`s well worth building it yourself , to get a much better car

I am also interested in a Nitro RS4 RTR kit. Does the SS stand for the super size one and is there any advantage of getting this since its just going to be heavier.
I found a place in Canada that is selling a RTR RS4 Super w/Murcielago body isnt this what you were looking or is the Nitro 3 different?

I dont know what the SS stands for, Im a Chevy gut, like to think that stands for super sport, but probably not. Anyway, it is the same size as the RTR version, but if you get the SS you get a .12 engine 1+HP, and a two speed tranny, save your self the money and get the SS, it is only offered in a kit, and you will need to buy a radio. The car is sweet.

the SS kit is much better than the RTR version. it comes with a 2-speed transmission, aluminum bug tube header, which by the way, still needs ported, alot better engine, the .12 SS, which is rated at over 1 hp. also comes with adjustable turnbuckles. the RTR are fixed. the RTR engine isn't the best, but, it will get you by for awhile. if you don't have your own radio equipment and are on a budget, the RTR is for you. but, if you can afford it, i would go for the SS kit.

I'm new to this but...
How much work would have to go into putting together a kit, approx hours for a newbie?
I like the ss but I am a little nervous about starting something like this without any idea of what is going on. Although I am mechanically inclined.
What else would I need to buy or get to finish a kit?

you might have 3-4 hours in building one of these kits. seeing that you are mechanically inclined, i don't think you would have any trouble. the SS kit directions are a breeze. there are no words, but, if you can basically read a blueprint, or look at pictures, you can do it. don't let it intimidate you. all it is assembling screws to plastic and some metal. it's easy. best thing about it is, you will know how it goes together by building the kit. which leads to being easier to disassemble and repair if you have to.
for the ss kit, you will need a CA glue to glue the tires. but, i recommend better tires if you are going to race. the basic tools are included along with diff grease, thread lock, and shock oil. your basic #2 phillips screwdriver is needed. if you were to have a better set of allen wrenches that would be a plus. the ones that come with the kit are small in length. a little difficult to get any torque.
hope this helps you out!

What other parts would I need to buy for the actual car. I know that I would have to buy a controller(lack of better word) but do the steering and gas servos come in a package. What else would I need?
I am looking to do as cheap but decent setup as possible.
How much would it end up costing me in total?

there are many, and i mean many radio systems out there. when you buy a radio system, it comes with 2 standard servos. i recommend an FM system. Or, you could get the JR racing XR2 75mhz Radio system from www.horizonhobby.com for about $100. i use that system on my Losi XXX-NT, stadium truck. i really like it. you should try and shoot for one that has digital trims. especially if you are racing.

Is that all I would need, the radio system (controller and two servos), and then I could just put it together and drive it?
I know that I might also need some paint.

here is the only parts not on the rtr. adjustable turnbuckles, 12rss engine, and 2 speed tranny. everything else is the same. these parts cost 200. it`s cheeper to get the ss and have these better parts.
