I'm a newbie and want to get a truck. I’ve been looking at the Traxxas Stampede VXL and the Slash VXL 4x4. My lhs sells parts for most of the Traxxas vehicles. I want something to run around the backyard and bash with my friend. I will not be racing. I am leaning toward the slash 4x4, but not sure. Which one would you buy between the two for a newbie?

well the stampede ur gona be able to drive over a little rougher stuff. but the slash is 4 wheel drive. i think the stampede would be a good choice for bashing with friends, but if you ever wana race the slash is the way to go no question. my first rc was a stampede back in 2000. anything traxxas is always top quality. welcome to the addiction of rc.

In all honesty I'd buy the Stampede VXL or a Slash 2WD and put the VXL in it. I have all of these trucks including a 4x4 Slash and I have to say they I'm just not very impressed with the 4x4. I bought it to race in the 4x4 class but up until now i've pretty much been bashing with it. It handles pretty well except for body roll but I'm concerned with the number of parts i've been breaking. I've broke the front bulk head twice, rear bulk head once, several carriers and destroyed the center driveshaft. None of this stuff breaks on the 2WD's so for general bashing i'd recommend you stick with one of those.

For non-track use the bigger the better. Hit a street curb with a slash and you will be rebuilding the whole thing. Don't get me wrong they are great RC's just short

I put weights on my 2wd Slash with a little piece of acrylic covering it where the ESC mounts and it worked really well. I race it and haven't tipped.

Hit a curb with anything, even a real car, and you'll be rebuilding something.
