R/C newbie here with a Pede VXL and an itchy upgrade trigger finger. I'm not looking for more speed since as a newbie I already have enough trouble with my driving. I do want to address the vanity side of the R/C world and trick out my truck and maybe improve the handling. Running area is usually bumpy yard and state park land.

Any suggestions on what to upgrade first when focusing on things that does not increase speed? Also, do all Pede bodies fit the VXL? I'm interesting in custom painting a blue body.

All pede bodies will fit a pede vxl. Proline has some nice bodies, too, like the hummer h2 sut

Something that you should get early would be an rpm bumper. I can't tell you how much the bumper has saved my previous bandit vxl.

Another something that you may need in the near future is a new form of your tranny case's protection. The plastic wheelie bar serves just that for now. I broke mine in the first 10 minutes. You don't really have to buy something to replace it. A piece of metal (i.e. titanium/scrap iron/aluminum/etc.) would do fine. If you don't want to craft anything, buy a swami bar, they're legendary

Btw, stay away from integy [:@]

The XL-1, and XL-5 bodies will fit the VXL. To improve the handling, there is only one way; wider. This can be cheap/fairly expensive depending on how you go about it. I would say wait until you get to be a better driver. I never flipped my Stampede once I got really good at driving it. I would stay away from aluminum/steel (except in your transmission). It's expensive, has no flex, can cause other parts to break, not that much more durable then RPM. Another word of advise, if RPM makes it, IMO it's good. I own their A-arms, bumper, gear cover, bearing carriers, etc. It's all great, and I never break mine. I would get the front bumper, a spark/swami bar.

Let me just say something now... I hope you will keep this in mind. I have over $700 into my Stampede, and I always wish that I would have just let it break before I upgraded it. Just leave it stock. The only reason you should get the RPM bumper and Swami bar is because it can actually save you money. Other then that, leave it stock, trust me... Oh, and one more thing; don't try to turn it into something it's not. If you want something that's as tough as nails, get a 1/8 buggy. If you want good handling, get a t4, Revo, etc. Point is, don't waste money making the Stampede into something it's not. Enjoy it for what it is.

Hey guys, I've decided on the big bores from traxxas. What weight oil should I use? I'll be using the white stock springs with a few pre-loaders.

Thank you both for the good advice. I'll start looking for a bumper and a body to paint just for fun.

Stock oil is like 30 wt. You can go up or down from there depending on how stock worked for you. Higher shock oil will stop you from bottoming out, but have a slower rebound rate. Lower (wouldn't advise it), would make the rebound faster and easier to bottom out. FYI, usually you put higher weight in the rear as that is where most of the weight is.

My neighborhood is fairly new with alot of houses in the making, so lots of dirtmounds. I'm about 6 foot in height and I jump my pede over my head by atleast another foot. It's not like I drive to the top and just let gravity take it down, I floor it to 20+ (just a little before I top out, I've got a 16 tooth pinion and 6 cells in there) and really fly it. Popped a shock cap and oil was everywhere! So yea, maybe 40 wt all around...

Check the beater builds thread. I typed it out in there.

So i am getting a vxl motor and a set of big bore shocks for my birthday. I am also getting a battery for my heli lol thats off topic though.
I will be using the vxl motor with a sidewinder esc. I am hoping to bring the temps down some from my 5700 with a 2s 6000 battery.

Hey guys , just got a stampede vxl roller in the mail today . Im gonna be running my mamba max 5700 kv esc and motor. I put the motor in already , currently using 17/84 pinion and spur ( wondering if thats ok) , the pinion doesnt seem to really go against the spur all the way ( mesh up) its making some contact but not as much as id like. And when i spin the wheels it doesnt quite sound like my ft b4. Also what is everyone here do with there recievers , im using a futaba r153f fm micro and it doesnt fit to well , the antenna also doesnt have much slack when i try to mount it , what are you guys doing about this . any pics on setups or some help would be great , still gotta look everything over so i may have a few more questions but thats a start . Thanks

well for one, you need either a bigger spur gear or a bigger pinion. I would recommend a bigger spur gear.
As for the receiver mount, i have a futaba fast radio with a micro type receiver. I bought a rc10gt2 receiver box and dremelled out my chassis to make it fit. Here is a couple pics.

Nice , i really like that setup . What kind of gearing are you running? . i should have a bigger spur by friday , i ordered it yesterday . Id like to run the truck by friday also so no time to do what you did but i guess ill do a lil dremel work to get it to fit . My antenna wont be to long though using the stock mount on the car. when you mesh the pinion to the spur on your car , do you have to have the bottom of the motor all the way towards the spur and then screwed in? bc on my car i do and theres still some room to go. its not that closely meshed together and i cant move the motor any closer.

well you will want to be able to move the motor close enough to were its tight, then while the crews are still loose put a piece of paper in between the motor and spur gear. Then tighten and it should be set perfect, a tiny gap in between the 2. I might be able to get a close up tomorrow of mine. I am running 16/90 and it gets hot after 20-25 minutes of running on a 2s 6000 mah pack. But it is getting cooler outside and it runs fine. But in 90 degree heat its very very hot.

I told you this already, read my posts more carefully. post number 8414 i tell you. You either need a bigger spur gear (i would recommend that for the 5700) or a bigger pinion gear.

Problem is that anything over like 86t spur wont fit into a RPM gear cover. FYI, the rpm gear cover is worth it. unlike the stock one, the rpm one doesn't have a hole in it that lets dust in. i can't tell you how many times I've had to take off my gear cover because of some dirt that got in there. if you don't believe me, just take off your stock gear cover and you'll see.

i think im gonna need the stock gear cover though bc im running a pretty crazy setup , mamba 5700kv on a 3s lipo and if the 90t spur wont fit in the rpm one then im outa luck with that , the motor gets hot sometimes. I did open it up and there was some dirt in there , that does kinda suck . were is it coming in through the spot were you adjust the slipper? bc thats sealed with a lil cover

Big deal, i dont even use a gear cover. Its just another 2 screws i have to take out. I have been running on this spur for over 2 months now in dirt/dust/gravel and anything else you can think of. Its not that big of a deal to run without a gear cover. Same with my brother, he has not been using a gear cover either and still no problems. The only time i ever wreck a spur is when im jumping and i was jumping the other day and surprisingly no stripped gears.

I'm mounting the esc to my shock tower, will drilling some small holes really weaken the shock tower? I need 4 holes so I can put in some zip ties.

http://www.redrc.net/2007/02/peak-ra...19-turn-motor/

tihnking about putting one of these in to get some more power, and you can rebuild them. do you think its a good idea?
