RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
Hi,
I am interested in getting the Dark Impact!
Please, could anyone tell me the wheelbase measurement and
the maximum width of the car (wheel nuts to wheel nuts)?
I may put a different body later on.
Also, about the pinion gears, are they standard 48P like these ones,
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXEX24&P=7
or are they 'Tamiya' standard ones like this,
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGJ70&P=7
I heard that Tamiya's 48P are different to those made by Robinson/Kimboroughs.
The reason i am asking is I am about to make the purchase of the Dark one
and would like to order the correct pinions gear as well.
(I guess you can say it is 'Impacting' my purchase right now! hehe!)
Also, are there any 'essential' spare parts or hop-up parts I should get as well.
You know, parts that happen to wear out faster than others and parts that will add
flexibility/functions/performance or whatever.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
I believe the tamiya gears are 72 pitch. Not really any aluminum or anything avalible yet, so at this point, all i would reccomend is a nice motor and esc.

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
...The drivetrain of the DI is a little different..Of course you could all know this already and I am just running behind [&:]
...here are the front and rear diffs from TAMIYA...The front is on the left...
...The stock pinion is 26t...Quite big...The stock spur is 78t as noted earlier...An 85t is also included and TAMIYA says it is not used in the instructions but it WILL fit...The bigger spur will give us more start torque than the 'stock' one but a slightly slower top speed...
...This might get confusing because i dont fully understand it myself...Tamiya is using a '05 Module' pinion...It is not something I have seen before but it loks like a trickle-down from the higher level on-road sedans...
...TAMIYA lists the wheel base as 260mm but i am not sure of from where they measure...

...TAMIYA still has no info on their site, linked at the top of the thread, but they have a lot more eye-candy up...
...I finished the build last night and the pictures dont even do the CHASSIS justice...It just looks so damn good...

...RE: Parts to pick up...IMO; 8 softer o-rings, (30-35 hardness), FOUR x 850 bearings for the steering rack, (i put some in and it is a no-brainer), flouring coated 5mm pivot balls, (10 in a pack but you need 12) and the 'other' 5mm pivot balls, ( the ones that take a screw to be mounted, the ones that DONT have a screw post on them), also flourine coated...other than that you should be good to go...
...BTW the stock threaded shafts are a MAJOR PITA!! Fit them and then get the adjustables the MINUTE they are released...

Man, that tranny is crap compared to the rising storm...the weight, the tranny...i'm starting to doubt that this is so great. Besides the turnbuckles nothing different really catches my eye.

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
As i mentioned earlier, from hearing the weights and such, i'm not seeing a huge advantage. If i was tamiya, i would've spent that extra 50 bucks per kit throwing camber links and changing the spur/pinion setup on the rising storm.

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
...rememeber they are different chassis though...The 03 takes the battery IN the chassis front to end in the middle...This chassis is head and shoulders above the other ones they have done...Seriously quick and seriously nimble...I am not trying to 'persuade' anyne at all but it makes past TAMIYA buggys look shameful...
...I have to disagree with ThatsAnEvader...The Di comes stock with bearings and an exceptional set of rims / tires at just a tiny little more in stock cost...It is a superior machine out of the box...The tie-rods suck for sure but thats about it...but I also must say that the 'stock' settings are loose as a goose and the adjustable buckles SHOULD have been in from the start...

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
...TAE I havent had too much time on it yet and its brushless and mostly on asphalt so far but it feels to be more over than under...The rear is quite slippery...Looks like maybe too much camber with the stock settings...Its turning on a dime though...Pretty impressed...
...You know when you get a new car, be it RTR or kit, and the first time you drive it and a certain thing is quite obviously wrong or not good? The only thing that I came up with was the rear setting...Other than that its great...Of course we all know that you fix one part and the gremlin moves somewhere else...But so far the slippery heiney is all i can point to and say YUCK!! That and the turnbuckles from Satan's own workshop [>:]

RE: Official Dark Impact Thread
...I have one, its built, painted and already scratched I took pictures but my wife has the digi-cam for open day at Kindy...They will be up in 24 hours though...
...My oil is too soft, scraped my bum a couple of times so I will go up to 400 but i still think 900 is WAY too hard...And I have to move the upper links in the rear to settle down the on-power wobbles out of the corner...Its a little bit skittery right now but I am sure the AON 5800 powerplant isnt helping
...BTW you will need some VERY low-profile electronic componenets to make everything fit nice and snug...The chassis is tight...I THOUGHT i would have some interference issues with the FUTABA HRS RX and the MAMBA 25 ESC but its all good...Range is fantastic too...
...The LONG steering linkage looks goofy as hell but ZERO problems...A regular 3003 servo is in there for steering and its going strong...
...I havent glued my tires yet and I paid the price...The AON is chucking them off all over the place and I have to check them after a speed run...I know I know Glue them

Bithed,
I think it looks pretty slick, the only thing I would change is the wheels, throw on a nice set of dish rims! What can size is the AON, is it a 540?

...The motor is the [link=http://www.aonelectric.com/Products/BrushlessMotors/Killer/killer.html?Category=Killer]AON ELECTRIC 5800L[/link]...You will love it...It makes the ground rattle as the car passes by
...INVERTED...I have to keep it a LITTLE stock until a certain TAMIYA race at the end of April...After that I think I will put some Proline rims and tires on it...Switch the stock units to the Mini Inferno ST...

Any reason that you run it without the cover on the transmission?
