Because I work at our local hobby shop and have seen the new greatplanes catalog and there is not an upgrade listed just the whole package. Also the shop owner has talk to them, and that is what they told him. They told us it was incompatible with G2, but that all add-on will work.

Anyone have any ScreenShots? I herd that G3 comes with ZERO (Thats 0) Helicopters in it! That means you gotta spend an extra $30 on top of $299 to get a COMPLETE RC Sim.... What a ripoff.
Does anyone have any screenshots yet? I seriously doubt it will be able to compete with AreoFlight in the physics department and wont even come close to ReflightXTR

screen shots are in latest Fly R/C, and it looks goooood. And, it is $199 from Tower, or $179 if you use 010J4 as your AD CODE ($20 coupon). Not a bad deal. I bet the physics rival AFP and looks better than XTR. Kind of the best of both worlds.

I agree. $299 list, $200 sale...whatever it is, it's rediculous. There's plenty of games out there with far superior graphics and physics engines (Doom3, Unreal 2k4, etc). Those games always start around $50! Where do these guys get off charging this redic. price? Perhaps they have a niche market and the other games see much higher sales, but c'mon...I'd much rather spend $200 elsewhere on parts or whatnot...

newbieT,
What you are not taking into consideration when you mention games such as Doom3, Unreal, etc., is that these are marketed and sold to a much greater percentage of the public than rc flight simulators. So, idSoftware makes their profit from sheer volume of sales, making only a few bucks per sale, whereas, Knife Edge Softwae and Great Planes have to make more money per sale to turn a profit. Certainly, if they sold as many G3's as Doom3's, then the price would probably be comparable.
You are also getting hardware, the controller, with the software. Adds to the cost.
I don't mean to belittle you, just pointing out the reasons why they are charging so much. That said, I do believe they could sell this for $150 and more people would buy it.

Somoney, If you read the whole page on towerhobbies you would have seen in the end it said "Helicopter functions available by free upgrade in Spring 2005."

Not in the November issue - you must have the December FlyRC. It's not out yet in my area.

My .02 about the cost....
So far, I have purchased Realflight, the Realflight upgrade, and G2. I know that they bit my checkbook initially. However, when I consider how many times I have crashed while learning a manuver, I am realistically THOUSANDS of dollars ahead. Ok - so this sounds like I really suck at flying. Not really. Keep in mind I have almost 2k in my H1 SU-31 - one crash of that pup and I could have bought 10 G3's to work with......

I just got back from the Hobby Visions show in Vegas and spent a decent amount of time on AFP, Reflex and G3! The G3 was still a Beta version and didn't have full funcionality but I can tell you the physics are every bit as good or better than AFP. The field I was flying on was huge and the graphics were excellent. You could see the background reflected off the Monocote of the plane up close and the flying was very realistic. It doesn't have the photograph background like Reflex but flew more realistically and the interface is excellent. The airplane editing is somewhat like a CAD program and there was way more features than I could explore in the hour or so I spent playing with it.
I was told there isn't going to be an upgrade but a rebate program is being worked on. Add-ons will work and making new planes and graphics will be much easier.
One thing I tried and seemed to work was landing on the side of a building (hovering up to it and touching the wheels). When I did it wrong and touched the wing or canopy it crashed but the wheels would sit against the building. Has anyone tried this with the other sims?
