I started Realflight G2 the other day and was notified it has been over 30 days since I last checked for updates. I have had it for years and am used to it doing this.
I tried to let it check, but am getting error messages ... likely due to a firewall. I shut down my firewall (Windows) and tried again, same error message.
Is anyone else having this problem? I am running XP and SP2.
G2 runs fine, I just can't update it, or join anyone else in flying on-line (but I never did that much anyway).
Thanks,
Tim

Dave,
It worked fo rme last night, but had to go to the secondary server. Make sure you have the control panel that will automatically check the secondary server. If you are not sure, you can download it here:

I have been trying for four days now,got the secondary server, nothing.Looks like since G-3 came out they are not paying much attention to G-2,maybe Great planes should release the last update to the public so someone can host the download on their website so we can 'SUCESSFULLY'download it.Or make a CD available so we can have the update when we need it and not be at the mercy of Great Planes servers.I really like Great Planes products, think some of their kits are great and their die cutting is excellent. The only beef i have with them is the flight simulator situation. They are really giving themselves a nice black eye on this one.

My version is 2.00.723, does anyone know if this is the latest version or not?
I still am getting the message that the server is down or my firewall is restricting the access.

Sounds like your firewall is restricting access because I was able to get in last night. I would be surprised if RealFlight is still supplying G2 updates given that their current focus is on G3.

Guys,
I hate to say this, but I think the problem is with your firewall. I can access the server fine, but it has been going to the secondary server lately. No problems updating or flying multiplayer

cfossa,Nah,I reformated this computer, had G-2 on it before, updated just fine when i installed it then.Same ISP,same everythig,no problem at that time.Today i installed G-2 in another one of my computers, same old crap. When it connects to the secondary server i get the warning'This program has performed an illegal function','The FBI will be knocking on your door any minute now'hehe,
Either my ISP changed something that i am missing(calling their tech support to make sure)or Great Planes has done or isn't doing something.

Slade,
I just tried now, and connected fine to the secondary server. It is up.
Good luck solving your problem ... it does not appear to be a problem with the server.

I was able to connect to the secondary server today (Sunday 12/19/04).
I had to shut down my windows XP firewall to check the version for an update. The primary server did not connect. The secondary server did.
I have version 2.00.723, this is still the most current version.
Note, I had to turn the XP firewall off completely. (Enabling "realflight" to have access did not work), I had tried both methods last week and still had no success,. but today I did get it to work.

I have not been able to connect to main or secondary server for at least 2 weeks. [:@] You can JOIN a "flying site" if you know someone that you can call on the phone that is not having troubble hosting. [sm=thumbup.gif] Type in there IP address, search, join . Hope this helps.

Guys,
If some of us can connect, and some can't, then the problem is not that the server is down. I just tried it right now, and connected fine to the seconday server.
I know you don't want to hear this, but the problem is on your end
What ports are you opening up in the firewall? Have you tried turning the firewall off altogether? How are you connecting to the Internet?

Slade,
I'd have to say that reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling (or installing a new) OS is not "nothing changed." That brings something else to mind that you can try. Make sure you have the control panel version that can connect to the secondary server. You can get it from here:
http://www.gpsoftware.com/kb/q01-1050.htm
I recently put G2 on a new PC and had to download the control panel manually to connect to the secondary server. Once I did that, it worked fine. The control panel on the G2 distribution disk will not go to the secondary server. My G2 almost always goes to the secondary server, so this may well be your problem.
If that does not work, here are a few more questions:
What did you do after reformatting the computer? Did you install the same OS or a new one? Which one? What about firewall software? How are you connecting to the internet? Do you have a router with a HW firewall?
If you can not see the server, there is something you can fix on your end to see it ... just have to figure out what changed when you reformatted. FWIW, the port you need open in your firewall is 21 for FTP. You also need any SW firewall configured to allow the G2 control panel to access the Internet. The ports for multiplayer are different from the ports for upgrading.
FWIW, I just tried to connect now. The primary server did not work, and the secondary server connected fine.
Good luck ...

Slade,
Well ... it worked yesterday but I can not connect to the server today. Guess I need to do some of those jumping jacks too huh?
It sure would be nice if you could get the download and keep it on your PC so that you are not dependant upon the server to install/re-install the sim!

OK,
FWIW the secondary server is working today. I tried on two different PCs, and they both worked fine. The primary server is down (perhaps this is what the previos message meant when they said the server wil be up in Jan?)
The multiplayer function also works off the secondary server. I just joined a session and tried it.
If you guys are still having trouble connecting, I'll be glad to try and help. Email or PM with the details of your problem.
Merry Christmas ... hope you all get some cool RC stuff!

I guess no one cares?
The neither server works for me. I had FTP turned to "allow" on the firewall and then I tried with the firewall turned off. I also downloaded the control panel. It appears that was added for the cases when G2 doesn't boot up enough to use the update in the help file.
I have verson 723. Is there a newer update?
I downloaded the control panel but that didn't change anything.
I get the error 183 Then 4352. at this point it asks about the secondary server. I click yes and it says it needs to close and wants to know if I want to send a error report.

Resting a little easier now. I looked around some and apparently 723 is the latest vesion? I downloaded it last spring. This means to me that G2 is on the 2nd burner? I've been away from home for 6 months and was afraid to move the program to a different computer at a different I.P. because of what I had read on here. At the other location, I could just go out the the flying field almost every day. I'm home for the holidays.
Also the #2 server is only on for short periods before it locks up? That must explain the fact that some people have no trouble with number 2 and others cannot get in? It's hard to believe that they would be limping along with one dead server and another overloaded for this long?
I see where they hired a new manager at Leading Edge. I had seen the ads last summer that they were hiring. They must be having some shake-up around there? It appears that they've been goal driven to get G3 on the market by Christmas '04 or bust? G3 is premature and everything else as well, is bursting at the seams?
It must be that the little college town software developer (Leading Edge) is responsible for this mess? Great Planes problem is that they stuck with Leading Edge. I would think that the Real Flight server is at the developer's location and not in IL? But, I would also think that by now, Great Planes would have gone out with some management people and gotten the house cleaned up to where the guys writing the software can do their job, that the help desk person will know what's going on, a networking guy to look after the servers, and some money to keep things going at this critical time?
I just hope everything stays status quo in my installation for now. I not moving it to a different I.P. or rocking the boat until this blows over.
Enjoy,
Jim

Personally I think it's pretty poor Customer Service to intergrate a feature that only allows for a gui interface via internet to download updates anyway. They should really allow for manual updates through the avenue of Manual Download and Manual Launching of programs.
G2 blows, Great for teaching my wife but it sucks otherwise.
