I'm interested in blending my own fuel. All the ingredients are cheap and readily - available...except nitro. The best I can find is nearly £80-gallon, and its modest use adds about 40% to the cost of each gallon of fuel.

Anyway, haven't tried acetone as an ignition improver, but thought that you may be interested to know of a little experiment. I was a bit concerned that the acetone might damage silicone tubing/pump diaphragms. So, I have immersed some fuel tube in a jar of acetone for a period of 24 hours. As far as I can tell, there is no adverse affect upon the tubing.

Having just read the previous post, I'm going to repeat the experiment, but with acetone and aluminium.

In Top Fuel drag racing the fuel content can be as high as 100% nitro depending on many factors like air temp and track conditions. Usually there is a small amount or methanol added to tone it down some so the engine doe not over power the tires. They are spark ignition engines much like your daily street driven car, just made super strong to withstand the added power of full nitro and forced induction. Our engine is usually started on methanol then while it is running it is switched to nitro, it makes a very interesting sound change.

I'd be very happy to listen to a recording of that, sir....

It is so flipping loud it would probably overload the typical sound recording device.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,eh,,,,,,, what did you say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If you have never been near one running WOW actually shakes the ground for quite a long ways from the car. And the concussion of the exhaust compresses the air and impacts your cheast. Thrilling really. When we start it in the pits a crowd gathers,, then he reaches up and cracks the throttle and the entire crowd jumps back a few feet!

why do they "crack" the throttle before they shut it off? to set the clutch or something?

The only reason I know of to crack the throttle is to clear the system out before shutting down.
The crankcase oil is a special lube manufactured specifficaly for the nitro engines. It is changed after each run because looks like chocolate milk afterward.

Aluminium/acetone...32 hours' immersion...totally impervious, AFAICS.

As I recall the nitro oil is very thick, the pro stock oil and other gassers is very thin.
