For the shocks, maybe it will be best to install them the cylinder up, so oil doesnt drip through the top assembly (I'd guess some oil could find its way through the threads)

Yeah most definitely.
I'll be using the original swivel mount at the bottom and make something to attach to the top.

RE: New Project
Well nothing much to report today.
Made up the shocks for the front, and it's all temporarily clamped together at the moment.
The movement is good but the springs I go tare way too weak.
Not to worry I'll et some more during the week.
Rear axle bearing moutns are in and am about to start making up the rear axles to run from the diff to the wheels.
Also need to make another pair of shocks for the rear.
Got a bit sidetracked today with a couple of chainsaws.
Yes more motors!
A Jonsered 35cc (I think)
And the coolest little saw ever.
The [link=http://bigdmc.com/110.html]McCulloch MAC 110[/link].
Nowhere near as shiny as that one though.
Couldn't even see that it was yellow, it had that much dirt and grease on it.
Anwyay at $30 for the two of them I couldn't resist.

RE: New Project
Ok here's some updates on the shocks.
Found some smaller nuts that sit inside the tube which works ok.
As long as my welding holds up....
Gonna have to source some more balljoints for the ends on these rear shocks to allow for the twist movement of the swingarm.
And here's a bolt again.
With a spanner.
Huge or normal size?

RE: New Project
Wow DV where did you find such a tinyspanner ?!!
I'd like to see a spanner that can operate this bolt haha
Inverting the nut to cap the shockis a clever idea! I noticed you placed a square tubing right under where the craddle will go when compressing the suspension. Is thatforblocking further travel (so that the swingarm cannot go more than horizontal) ? Are you planning to weld it there?
Because I thought it was nice with your setupthat it could go lower than horizontal in case you want to adjust it to sit lower (by making adjustment to the upper shock mount). I was thinking that running it lower (like almosthorizontal whenjust sitting)would help with the center of gravity (you had some concerns about the engine being high) while keeping about the same travel as in front.
Keep it up it's a very nice and interesting project!

Fred - I always prop the car up that high when working on it to keep the wheels off the ground.
Don't wanna get flat spots.
It will ride lower that that.
Lars - I'm not sure how big the bolt is.
I'll measure it for ya later.

all very interesting stuff, DVP
you are quite the engineer
was wondering about the progress on this one
i love watching these home builds, inspiring me to do one myself
i need to sell off some of the junk i have lying around first though

RE: New Project
Thanks mate.
There hasn't been much progress here lately as I've been sidetracked with other stuff like the homebuild contest, repairing chainsaws and so on.
And I'm away for a couple of weeks at the moment so no tinkering for a while yet.
Hopefully i'll get a bit done when I get back home again.

YEA, you tell HIM cooptroop!!! Show him your welds so we can see how it's done! Or, just point us to that tutorial on welding you must have done.

RE: New Project
DVP,
You ever fill them with oil? I'm curious how this is turning out. I'm of the impression that even if you leave the oil an inch from the top of the cylinder, it's going to only travel say half before it locks. I'm thinking we need a way to attach a reservoir of some kind to compensate for the displaced fluid that the shock shaft adds into the equation as it moves through it's compression cycle.
Gotta be a clever way to do that on the cheap. Like using a gutted Shrader valve on the shock body, so you can thread tubing of some kind to it. From there, we need some kind of reservoir that'll take a beating on the other end of that tube.
Like the reservoir from a motorcycle brake. Probably have to fill it with foam first. ...hmmmm.....

RE: New Project
I also thought about this issue for my project, I am stillnot sure how much of an issue it would be. Air being compressible, maybe 1 inch of air it would make enough space for the rod to take itsspace into the cylinder.
If the shock is not sealed then it's another story as the oil might then leak with the pressure so you would have to have at least the same volume of extra space as the volume of rod going into the cylinder.
In your case It would maybe be possible to weld tabs on the side of the shock body, allowing to mount the shocks at their side and leaving the top free for a flexible hose or attached reservoir. Back with my mspaint drawings
Edit: after posting I realized the reservoir in my picture is ridiculously small, would probably have to be larger
In my case it's a little more complicated as I want the top shock mount to be swivel (ball) because of the macpherson design.

So you're saying that until I learn how to weld I shouldn't weld?
Everyone else - I just got back from a 2 week roadtrip, and will be getting stuck back in to this project soon.

RE: New Project
Alright.
Had a good day scavenging at the scrapyard today.
I have no idea what these things are off, but it appears it's some sort of steering mechanism.
Either way there's plenty of goodies here.
Lots of tierods and ball ends and cantilevers and stuff.
Just a shame there weren't 4 of them to make it even numbers of everything, but at $10 I'm not complaining.
This should come in very handy.

RE: New Project
Indeed they are not.
Just been out to the shed and chopped a few things up and mocked up the rear suspension.
Need to shorten the shockies a fair bit but these new rod ends will come in handy for sure.
Hopefully get a bit done on the weekend, unless the shed blows away, as that cyclone migh tbe heading this way. []

Hey it never hurts to have an extra pair of eyes on the lookout.
Anything in particular you're after? (part from 6 inch spoked wheels)
Just let me know mate, I'll keep an eye out.
I'm at the scrapyard almost every day poking around and, well, you've seen some of the stuff I find there.

Ah yeah maybe....
The rods all had cable strands coming out of them at the ends.
Either way it's just what I meed for my suspension building.

RE: New Project
Well guys...
I've got bad new and good news.
Bad news is that this project probably won't go any further than this.
[]
Good new is that it's because I might have a new powerplant in the pipeline.
When I was down at the scrapyard the other day, the young fella who works there asked "What do you do with all this stuff anyway?"
So I told him and he was very interested to hear more.
Then he says that he's got a pocketbike, brand new, still in box that he "doesn't need".
Interesting.
He reckons he bought two of them at the same time and kept this one as a spare parts bike.
Says he could never get the motor to run, but never really tried too hard so it might be ok.
He's gonna bring it in sometime next week when he gets a chance for me to look at.
I asked how much he wants for it and he said "Oh I dunno....20 bucks...?"
Yeah I know!!!! For a complete pocketbike still in the box!!!!
(Not sure how it can still be in the box actually maybe that's more a figure of speech for being brand new)
So I'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself (Something I've never been really good at) but am already planning a full rebuild of this chassis.
It will be bigger.
Much bigger.
The motor that's on here now might well end up on the other car.
Oh ok, so maybe I've already sussed out the possibility of attaching a grinder head to it and I think it could work.
Mmmmm
Stay tuned for chapter 3 of the Feral build.

Man, your so lucky to have a place like that to get your parts from. Something that Melbourne lacks really badly []
So...what size are you thinking for the rebuild rebuild? Are you going use the same wheels as before?
