Planes are easier because they can glide. Cost is cheaper. The simple small ones.
Heli's are rocks and they drop unless you can auto. More costly.
Heli's are more harder to master but the rewards at the end pays off.
I heard planes are more relaxing. Yes Helis are like balancing a broomstick on one finger. You are always moving your finger to keep the heli steady. Planes you can take a nap onces it up in the air.

Today I freaked out some people when before a maiden on a big twin airplane I took out my 550 to calm my nerves with some 3D. They could not understand that some 3D can relax...

The relaxing for me would be afterwards coming off the high. Pretty much what B.T.D.T. says is true. I fly both and airplanes in general are much cheaper and much easier to fly. Only difficult part to airplanes is landing. It can be pretty tricking depending on the aiprlane and the conditions.

Coming from a newb, is it easier to learn to fly planes or helicopters? Is one cheaper than the other? Whats your opinion......

The well known fact is that airplanes are slightly easier than helicopters, and depending on size could be cheaper. Now that word worries me. Cheap and RC usually do not mix, unless you want headaches with poorly manufactured products.
After saying that and potentially (most likely) pissing some people off, I will say that it is your decision and literally it comes down to your budget and how much you want to spend in the hobby. Quite frankly, I feel that you need to do a lot more research because based on your question, you need to fine tune your goals.
Running the risk of getting a novel typed here
why don't you write what you want (what prompted you to ask this question) so we can better understand the bottom line of your goals.Rafael

.... Smaller airplanes are cheaper, but doesn't mean they are inferior. I have found that crashes with airplanes to be far cheaper than crashing a heli.

I fly both airplanes and helis as im sure alot of people on here do. I learned on planes first, this helps get your orientation and reaction down. What i mean by this is knowing what way to move the stick when the model is comin at you vs going away from you. When i learned how to fly helicopters, it was a whole different learning curve. however once the one with the big spiny thing on top was flyin around in the air, it flew alot like a plane. with a heli you HAVE to learn how to fly with the rudder. once you learn that and it becomes second nature, you'll notice you do it when you fly planes too. you have to always be on top of a chopper to keep it in the air, where a plane you kinda point it in the direction you want to go.
As far as answering your question, planes are easier. i learned how to fly a plane in a day, where a heli took me a couple years to get the extra tools, save up to fix my crashes ( i was 15-16 at the time), and to build up the confidence to try it again.
