ok, I did a really stupid thing and need some input. I was flying Mon. in about 15mph winds and got a little to high, well the winds aloft must have been stronger because my hawk kept on climbing and got further away, I lost orientation and eventually the hawk dissapeared into the sky. Now my question is this, in 15 mph winds with a half of a tank of fuel and 2min of time how far could this this have went ?(altitude unknown)
p.s. now I know the effects of translational lift and I realize that I should have hit throttle cut as soon as I lost site of it.

Wow, that's funny and sad at the same time. I can only answer your question if you tell me what the throttle was when you lost site of it and the various changes the throttle went through, through the half tank of gas.

Strange, I was always under the impreqssion that when you are not inputting anything, the heli would eventually make a wrong turn and crash.
Where did you lost sight of it ?, was it in a town or up country ?
Make a paper which says tat you lost your radio-controlled helicopter and stick it to the windows of the nearest shops. Maby somebody found it.
To know where it might have gone, we need to know the throttle it was at and maby any other inputs that you were giving on that moment.

I was flying at home in the country, no houses for miles (unlike at my ff) I was at mid-stick with a tt36 and half a tank of fuel in a hawk sport. Shortly after losing it I went for a ride and asked a guy that was walking his dog if he saw it and he said no but he heard it, this was like 2.5 miles away. That is why I asked this question, is 2.5 miles possible ?

yup, potentially up to 50MPH, up to 20 minutes.... not likely to fly long without valid control though.
Sounds like luck might be on your side!
be sure to post if you get it back.

well valid control was inputed by the copilot, I however made no cyclic changes after losing sight. btw how far until you lose sight 300 or 400 yards ?

[sm=idea.gif]I,m thinking that now might be a good time to talk about putting your name adress and phone number on all your aircraft.
///mental note ... put name adress and ph# on all my aircraft....

update. I have found 2 people well acually 1 person and one family that saw it go in between their houses, they were able to give me a direction and it confirmed what the guy walking his dog told me. I went to http://terraserver-usa.com and drew a line from where I was flying to where it was spotted about a mile away and asked some people next in the line of travel, 2.25 miles away(garmin gps) one lady told me she heard strange noises coming from the woods behind her house about an hour after I lost it. She said it didn't sound like an animal or anything she has heard before, I did not look today because it was pouring all day but will head out tom. morning.

nope, I went into the woods where the lady said she heard strange noises and the tree canopy is to thick to see above it. There is also alot of grape vines and leaves.

Sounds like when I was younger and I got my first compund bow, me and my brother were shooting in the back yard and he saw some birds flying by, figured he was rambo and shot straight up at birds in flight with a freaking arrow.....thank god we didn't kill anyone, but still...funny....

Hope you find it. Heres a story to lessen the blow. You werent the first, or probably the last, to lose a RC aircraft. Maybe some humor form my story might ease you pain. Sorry to hear of the loss. [

Back in high school before I ever had a RC, a friend of mine had a pretty nice trainer airplane. He lived in a trailer park and was a pretty good pilot. He would use the small tarmac street that the cars used to drive on as a runway, stand on top his trailor, and fly it in big circles around the park. I would give him the "all clear' so he knew no cars were coming, and he would land right where he took off from.
Long story short. He did this regularly for quite a while (year or longer) but one day he got locked out of his radio controls when the plane was flying level, and steady, and straight eastbound, at about 25 MPH, and 100ft of elevation.......and away it went. NEVER found it. We know for a fact it cleared the entire trailer park, but no idea after that....Probably ended up in some farmers wheat field, and was discovered long after it flew away. Looking back it was incredibly stupid, and dangerous to fly like he did, but at 16-18 years old it was a riot. I dont think anyone thought much else about it except he was good enough to take off, fly in circles, and land safely over a long period of time, and it was really fun to watch. Aside from a missing airplane no other mishaps ever took place, thankfully.

here is a picture of where I lost it. If you can see the red push pin in the lower left corner, that is my yard, if you draw a straight line from there to about an inch below the upper right corner, that is the direction of travel.
