Default E Flight Phantom F-4-Turbine conversion

Just before I left the office yesterday morning a nice plain box turned up in the shape of a pre-production Eflight F-4. I had looked over the model at JetPower and made notes on how I might convert it to Turbine power. Looks like I have a tank that will work and I can use our Habu 32 pipe. When I've finished catching up after yesterdays lost time I'll post more info.

Dave are you going to use a single outlet pipe?

Way busier than I expected

Yes, there is zero point in making a special pipe, noisy, less thrust, impossible to fit. So between the outlets Eurosport style.
Wings are interesting, nice thick section

Still no time to start the F-4, but in the work shop and looking at it I noticed the Flap hinge set-up limits movement. The Aileron is double bevelled. The slots are all pre cut for horns and servo arm.

After a break from any workshop time with family matters, I'm now back looking at this model. The conversion is much more involved than the Habu 32. A single pipe set-up is possible, but it means lots of cutting. I'm looking at options, so working on the wings. Fit is brilliant, out of the box the pegs plug in, there are stops, so they don't push through, pix of outer panel on is dry, no glue, no tape!

This one reminds me so much of Eric Bauer's Performance Phantom.. I love it! Can't wait to get one.

Dave, can you use a single straight pipe out of one of the existing nozzles? I read about somebody doing this to a larger jet (of course I can't remember which one ) But I do rememeber them stating that the slight assymetric thrust had little effect on the flying habits...........

It is one of the things I considered-but no. On the larger models the length allows less angle than this would give. Yes I could get a pipe with a kinked end to straighten or even come back in, but then I may as well go for a Bi fo pipe. Waiting on cost, but my guess is I'll go straight pipe. I've removed the EDF Y outlet, so I have a good choice.

nice job the Phantom is one of my all time favorites would be nice to see that one at Offaly jets next year
I would go for a straight pipe no loss of power plus not as noisy

have a nice day

Yes, my first thought, but you have to cut a lot of the fuselage away under the fin. Will decide soon as the wings are complete!

Will bring it to the "crack"

Cool project! As for the single outlet, check out the Jepe website (http://jepe.org/indek.htm). Look under Fastfoam and select the F4. It's an EDF but it might give you some ideas on how to mask a single outlet.

Cracking on with the wings, started to put the servos in and control horns. Hinges in the surface side-typical E-Flight quality, everything fits, quality is good. Panel is not heavy.
Larger servos might be an issue as they side angled on the covers, but the surfaces are small, so 2.5kg plus should be fine.

Dave,

Are the servo-horn slots precut like that?

Test fit on the linkages and showing flap angle (which is not quite as much as I would have liked)

Bit more today, the pre formed legs are different to the std wire supplied with the EFLG 230's, note the bigger coil, pre bent position leaves the wheel just forward of the centre (perfect)
When you set the control surfaces, make sure you leave a large enough gap as the hinge line angles mean the gaps close with movement.

OK, looked more at the turbine install and have decided to get a Bi-fo pipe made to give people the choice. I still have not decided whether to wait or go single on this one.

would be interesting to see what the reduction in thrust might be using a bi pipe.

Will you be doing a kit the same as what you have done with the habu, i.e all the bits, servo's tank, pipe etc??

I'm guessing there is a loss (as usual) that's why I'm struggling with using it. Yes we will offer a conversion kit of parts, everything else in place for a single pipe set-up. Really need to build 2, one with each then we can have a race!

OK, back on this again. Making up the nose unit with T axle. First wing panel fitted too.
