Default smoker pump

Andy_paul,

Sorry if I came off a bit cranky last night but it just Irks me when people come in here and say I'm not advertising but I got the best thing since sliced bread and knock other peoples products in the process! If you have something better, Great! Lets hear about it. Show us what you got, we all love to see new and improved but do so without having to step on someone else!

John,
I'll make you a set.
But Jimmy can't bring on to the airplane. The powemax bottle won;t pass the inspection.
I'll mail it to you.

Apology accepted, I plan on going through the proper channels to advertise my pump on RCuniverse very soon. I would never try to plug my product, I know what it costs to run a website like this, and to have scumbags that what the exposure without putting out a little $$ irks me too.
Dont want to start another war, but you were plugging away at pump "xxx" giving out the Phone # and all, is that not advertisement? And like a said, the harris pump probably works great, and in no way am I saying that my pump is superior to his. I was just stating the facts, more on the lines of "you could probably build this yourself if you knew what he was doing" Don Harris sounds like he has earned a reputation for his pumps, thats excellent. It takes a lot to do that in this hobby.

Take care
Andy

Andy,
Your pump is exactly what I need. My pump is very similar to your.
I had see Don Harris pump. It work very good.
But is not enough PSI to spray mist for open engine set up.
Most of the problem with open engine set up is thrust.
The regular pump can put out alot of smoke at lower thrust.
But at full throttle. It just spray smoke fluid away. Not engouh PSI to spray mist for the hot thrust heat up the smoke fluid.
In the pipe set up if different. The smoke fluid had enough time to heat up to make smoke.

I want my smoke system to work at lower thrust and at full power.
Most the smoke system I had buy just work in the lower thrust range. It get less smoke at full throttle.

Tam, the reason you are getting less smoke at full power is probably due to the pump having to overcome the pressure difference of the exhaust stream versus ambient air pressure. Same goes with a turbine fuel pump. At full power model turbines develop anywhere from 20 to 40 psi of case pressure. So at full power a pump has do deliver somewhere close to (other factors are included like lube, chamber pressure drop, etc etc that change as well)that value plus more in order to get a positive flow rate and keep the jet running. One of the reasons turbine fuel pumps have to be able to pump at higher pressures.

Has anyone tried the built-in smoke system in the JetCat system software??--I plan on using it on my soon-to-fly Planes Plus F-15. I didn't want to screw around with jamming in a smoke tank in my HotSpot.
Looks like a simple sytem using Compressor pressure, picked up off the propane port (close to 40 PSI for a P-120) and either a homemade or one of BV's smoker pipes. ECU software controls the whole thing, using a standard JetCat solenoid for the on/off switch, with a couple of T's and one-way valves.

AMT Europe-- http://www.amtjets.com (go to Download Page) has one available for their engines. Same deal, but you do need an extra channel, since it is not built into the AUX channel on their software, like on the JetCat.

I have one of Don Harris's old style pumps off one of my Big Birds. These things caused more than one plane to bite the dust, suddenly giving off bursts of RFI. Guess his new ones are better in that regard. Maybe had something to do with ignition engines. Don't really know. Most of us switched to TME after 2 guys in our club lost their birds.

FYI, I am sending along, on the following post, a picture of what my old pump looks like.

Andy,

Have you thought about hooking a speed controller to your pump to change the motor speed and pump pressure for different turbine throttle settings?? May be something to try.

Yup, It is the way to go if you have room for a strong tank that can take the pressure. I have fiddled with the TME smoke pump and that worked weel, but the life of that pump is going to be limited.

This how the standard smoke pump put out at full power.
I'm running single injecter. The pump can't pump enough psi to run dual injecter.

Here are the complete smoke system set up.
Smoke tank bottle $20
2 manual shut off valve $13
1 solenoid shut off vale $67
1 circut board to turn on solenoid that hook up to RX. $20 (Jetcat engine doesn't need the circus board)
2 stainless steel tube injecter with mounting welded. $ 20
1 Festo 4mm oneway valve for gas or air refilling. $10
1 Festo 4mm quick disconect fitting for refilling. $5
6 ft 4mm clear line and 1 T connector $5

Total $160
This set up cost little more than pump system. But it save some of the weight and it can put more smoke than any smoke pump on the market.

I working on my own smoke pump system. I exspecting my pump can do the same.
Brg,
Tam

Yo, you guys that are using Powermax cans for smoke tanks: what mods are you doing to the can tops to use for this? Are you installing Festos or simply sodering brass tubes in (a dicey proposition with some residual fuel inside)? What is the capacity of one can and how long can you run the smoke? Thanks.

Mark,
I first cut one apart to see how it was put together, but basically, I punctured the valve with a drill. I then aeropoxied a brass nipple in place. Same thing for the overflow.

If I remember correctly, it works out to 23oz of smoke fuel. This runs for probably 2 minutes. The last 30 seconds or so are kind of spotty becasue the "clunk" is not heavy enough. The clunk is actually an aluminum pipe that is probably about 6 inches long. Im thinking about putting a real clunk on there and glueing the top of the can back together.

The only festo I have is a one way between the overflow and the engine.

Chris
