Finally flew my Skygate hawk, powered by AMT olympus, powerbox cockpit SRS. I gyro. (it was a very long build)
Test flight was uneventful.
Thanks to Marcs for the (virtual manual) here on RCU. The tips on the small outer gear door and canopy were really helpful.
David gladvin for mailing me the Red Arrows color samples and Ralle from Tailor made decals for all the support during painting.

Chatty.
Your welcome and glad it helps, enjoy this great jet.

Does anybody balance the elevator? this worie me a lot. If you mount the elevator on fuselage it will go all the way down even with the servo. I think this will cause the servo to make force everytime to bring it to neutral or any up and down movement.

Can someone advice me on what to do with this?

Thanks

Hi, you can see a lot of pictures of "what Goes Where" on GBR jets website under Skygate Hawk.

I have not balanced mine. I have over 65 flights and yes with it will go down with both servos on it when I transport it. It will hold in netural postion with my power off. I am using 8711s servos mounted at the rear.

I don't know of anyone that balanced them in my readings while building mine.

You are going to love this jet once you get it flying.

The balancing of elevators was discussed in detail and the result is that they don't need it. It will be fine the way it is.

Hi Guys, do your small gear doors stay up on the back side once closed? I have done the linkage over 6-7 times but still get the back side to stay up about 1-1.5 mm.

Thanks

That is hard to work out. Mine go flush when shut. I have a small strip of aluminum bent to help push the door open so it doesn't get caught on the main when it opens. If go back thru this thread you will see it done.

Page 4 shows the way some of the guys did the small doors. I ended up putting the deflector strip on the small door. Either way works great.

Hi Jeff, thanks. I have read all the notes on it. The darn thing does not want to cooperate. I have no binding issue. Just the trailing side sticks out. Somehow I think there is a bind in the hinges. Do you by any chance have a picture of where the tab was glued on the small door? Thanks again.

Hi Guys,
My gear doors do exactly the same thing. The back end isn't flush when doors closed. Its purely an issue of the rear hinge misalignment at production. You'll notice that you can just lightly press it flush on the ground, but the next retraction will cause the misalignment again. The rear hinge bear point needs to be a little lower (approx 1mm), then the door would be flush. Its not that easy to do, and I have been trying to avoid this little fix. I just can't be bothered!!

It could be done by separating the rear hinge from the door - just dremel the glue joint on the door, re-jigging the door flush and against the hinge in the closed position and gluing again.

Rgds

Default doors

Duc

As you can see I tried a couple of different locations on the retract to get the right geometry on the door closure.

You can also see the extra lip I installed on the door to keep them from binding when opening.

Hope this help.

Hi Topiwala, thanks. Mine exactly is as you said. With no pressure from outside, it becomes perfect. Then the next time. Stays up again. At least it is not my fault. I might leave it as is for now and look at how Skymaster has done it to see if I can find an easier solution.

Thanks Jeff. Would appreciate the pictures.

Hi Jeff. Got it. That works and I can do it easily. I was going per manual with drilled hole in the metal part. Thanks again.

Weights are not supplied with the CARF kit and I think balancing is probably more of a personal choice. In my opinion it is likely to be more necessary to balance for those models fitted with the original Skygate elevator linkage (long rod up the servos at the front). For those with the more positive rear mounted servos I would say less necessary. There are models of both types flying happily without balanced stabs.

kind regards

Colin

I used the Tams and didn't use any of the Carf bypass bottom. I too like Tams much better.

A friend and I have started designing a smoke tank for the Hawk, it will have all the provisions to carry the pump and smoke oil. Plug construction began today, still a few things to work out but I am hoping to release them in the very near future.

That is so Cool...I hope he would make a couple of them. I don't need the extra room for the smoke tank but I am sure if you do the full bypass that would be a big help.
