If you use this method (which I do), you have to be sure the wing root is actually parallel with the plane's centerline. Many are, but not all. If not, you can use a string taped between the nose and tail of the fuselage and use that as a reference.

I just use my straightedge like mentioned above and always but the wings on.... just easier for me to see it all.
