Default Large electric jet question..

I was thinking about powering the new BVM F-86 with an electric DF if something that powerful is available.

Anyone with experience in EDF in bigger jets like that.

A little research on the Internet found a Wemotech 750 E fan combined with a Plettenberg HP 370/30 producing 31N (7 lbs.) on 30 cells.

Is that considered top shelf in the EDF world, or are there better combinations?

Thanks

Default Large electric jet question..

My F-14 is producing 9 3/4 lbs thrust on 48 cells and 2 x 90mm
fans.Airborne in just 6 seconds from a rough field.
So,yes, the fan you write about, the WeMoTec 750,is currently the biggest available right now.
Good luck!
Matt.

Default Large electric jet question..

I'm finishing up a JHH Cougar using an E-Turbax I with a HW-750 rotor. Motor is a Hacker B50-16 XL. One guy in Las Vegas has modified a HW-750 to use two Hacker motors. He is obtaining 12 lbs of thrust. Do a search over at Ezone electric jet section.
Good Luck!

I've just begun learning about electrics myself. There is a terrific software program you can download called MotoCalc which makes recommendations on motors based on your airplanes specs. You can download a full feature trial version here: www.motocalc.com

Matt,

What are you running for fans and motors?? I assume you are running 2400`s for batts

Default Electric

Thanks all.

Any idea what kind of run time would be possible with a HW750 set-up?

John
most likely your airborne time will be just over THREE minutes, these EDF @ over 12 pounds use a lot of energy getting airborne.

Vin,my Tomcat uses 48 CP1700 cells (24 per motor)
Daniel Schubeler DS-51 3p-h all carbon fans ~(superb efficiency)
Hacker BL50 16 wind motors (brushless) and 2 x Hacker/Jeti Master 77 3-p OPTO ESC's.
Draws 47 Amps per motor, producing some 1041 Watts per motor.
2082 W. in total, in a 12.5 lbs. plane.
Astounding power to weight ratio, also, got airborne from a rough grass field,in nearly calm conditions in 6 seconds!
I have a video you can download on
www.silentflightonline.com
Look in the Image Base on the site, download the middle video,(the other 2 didn't work)Cut and paste to Real Player to watch it.

That '262 you have there electric?Looks nice!

Default elec jets

Matt,

Thanks for the info, I lost the 262 a few months back but have another just about complete but have been waiting for the same exact power packages you used, I am going with 20ea 3000 nimah cells though. It figures out to about 4.5 mins full power so with some throttling maybe more. The schubi`s have been on order since March with Dieter and the Hackers with Sean at Aero Models. Your F-14 was quite a project, did you total it recently??

Default Large electric jet question..

Vin, I'm interested in your use of NiMH cells in your Me 262. From what I've been seeing on E-Zone, the book on them is that they don't have the ability to put out the high currents we can get from nickle-cad's, even though they have greater capacity for their weight. The conclusion was they work out ok in smaller models that don't have as high a demand for current but they'll give you longer run times for a given battery weight.

Maybe those ideas are getting to be out of date. If NiMH cells are improving, that's really good news. 3000 mah capacity in 4.5 minutes works out to 40 amps. Can NiMH cells do this now?

Thanks.

Tom

Default Large electric jet question..

Yup,second flight got a shoot down, model smashed into the ground, fuse was turned into matchwood.
Amazingly, both motors and both ESC's ok,1 fan damaged, orher ok,although will go back to Germany for a check over, and the other fan for repair,I hope.
I will send the ESC's away for a check too,before running/ruining them.
All retracts, wing pivot plates, fins and one stab. survived this carnage,so I will use them in my replacement model already started.
A crying shame, this model flew so beautifully,it really was a pusseecat more than a Tomcat to fly!(the other spelling of pus...gets deleted!)
Shouldn't be too long before I'm flying it again!

There are NiMh 300 HV cells available now, some have used them in EDF and had good results from them, but have no personal experience myself.(HV meaning High Voltage)Apparently able to discharge current fairly quickly.
Matt.

I have used the 3000mah NIMH in a brushless sailplane. The DO NOT give out the current needed for high performance, the voltage would drop and the plane would BEC. They are for low current draw applications.
Nice to hear about the new HV cells, but I would wait for others to guinea pig them before investing.

Default HV cells

Easy tiger,

I meant the Sanyo 3000HV cells, they will handle about 45amps and are being used in Europe with good results, the down side is the longer recovery time compare with the 2400 nicads. Sean at Aero models is running the 3000`s and has had good luck with them combined with the Hacker motors.

We can't use the first part of the word 'cat' here on RCU? What's up with that? Any other forbidden, normal words I should know about? What about Nazi or Gestapo, or Richard Nixon? Okay, I'm just kidding, but, it does seem ridiculous. Just make certain not to surf Yellow Aircraft's website, as the P-word is spelled out in full. BTW, I am beginning to tinker with large electrics as well. They are just as expensive (if not moreso) than DF Glow and run for 1/5 the time, so I'm not sure of their point. The all carbon fibre fan units are great looking, though. I'm not sure what's up with long delays of getting the electric powerplants from Germany either. I've been waiting many weeks. I guess the demand is greater than the supply. Now, how many products can you say that about?

Default Large elec jets

Steve,

I got into the large elec jets with one of the Airworld ME-262 kits. There is a big learning curve here and you touched on some of those points, just as expensive as glow DF and flight times are about on half the glow jets. Since I have always been interested in the 262 and didn`t feel like tinkering with glow again I went with the elec stuff. I took my lumps on the first 262 and have another on the bench that will be powered by some different setup this time. BTW its harder to get (good) fans and motors than turbines. I have two Schubi fans on order since March!! and about a month now waiting for Hacker motors and esc`s. When the small 44mm turbines finally get to the market I will be going that way, hopefully.

I'like Vince, have been on the learning curve on the Airworld Me262, and have just refanned/motored my 262. ballpark price
Motors/controllers.....$ 1000.00
Schubeler 90mm fans 400.00
Batteries 500.
Total $ 1900.00
With this new power package I hope to get flight times of 4 plus minutes best time with orig.power system 3.2 minutes

PS Vin ..... pic.s of flaps will be on the way
