Hi folks!
It seems that I´ve to build a DIY fuel cell for my Rookie2. It should be of circular shape (115mm dia) and approx. 330mm long, giving a bit over 3,4l volume.
As I´ve no experience on this topic, anybodys help would be greatly apreciated.
Building the cell with foam and laminating it isn´t a problem as I´m used to composit materials. But tank details are of concern. I think its Ok to fit a DUBRO cap into it. I´ll integrate a piece of aluminium-tube into the front end for making it fit. Any concerns?
Big question is if baffles are needed for that size of tank. If so, where and what shape should baffles have to give free clunk movement?
If there is anybody out there with some experience on this topic, your help would be REALLY nice. As I´ll have holidays for the next week, I will finish my bird - so I´m a bit in a hurry about my fuel system.
THX in advance

Why not get a BVM turbine tank fitting set. You get the brass fitting that is epoxied into the tank and the screw in fitting with "O" ring and also a brass breather nipple. Works much better than a rubber plug, even if you use alluminium caps.

Thx Tommy, the fittings aren´t my biggest concern, but btw. I´m not able to locate these parts on BVM´s homepage. I think I read a bit about them in one of the last RCJI-mags. Any infos about these fittings avail on the net? You know which diam. clunk will pass through the opening?

Hi Thomas,
Have a word with your Rep - I believe there is a composite fuel cell coming soon with internal baffles for the Rookie 2.
Rgds,
Mark
Edit: Sorry, just read that you're in a hurry to finish it - my mistake

Thomas,
Not sure if McMaster-Carr ships to Austria, but you can also use this fitting for making permanent tank connectors:
5225K303 - Metric Glass-Filled Nylon Instant Fitting Male Straight Adapter for 6mm Tube, 1/8" BSPT
I made a tank froma mold and I've been using these fittings with great success. You simply drill a hole and the threads on the fitting make a nice tight fit I think with a 3/16 drill bit. On the inside I mix up some epoxy and cab-o-sil and seal the fitting to the tank. Or you could use aeropoxy. Great thing about these fittings is you can solder 1/8 brass tubing to rig the internal plumbing and 6mm fuel tubing connects directly to them.
If you are interested you can see the tank I molded here - http://www.houstonhobbies.com/tips/c...r-fueltank.htm

Hi folks!
Thx for your welcome inputs!
After venting the topic with my buddies today evening at our flying field, we developed a solution that should work very well. Inspired by some experiences three of my friends made by building custom fuel cells in 1996 for 2 twin powered SU-27s and a L-39 we came up to a solution pictured below.
The fuel cell is laminated as usual. The blue ring and plate are 3mm carbon fiber plate material. The ring to the right is glued and laminated onto the body. The plate on the left will be screwed onto this ring by 6 screws as pictured below. The opening in the fuelcell is large enough to service the tank and accommodate each type of clunk one will use. The green element is a rubber seal to prevent leakage. We think this solution will work very well, as inother form did on previous projects of my buddies.
But the big question, as statad already in the topic of this thread is the need of baffles. As all the previous tanks were for multi-tank configurations we don´t know if baffles are necessary and if so, how they should look like. Cos I´ve to start building the tank over this weekend some information and help on this topic would be greatly apreciated!
